Okay, I would like to try to buy and install Filmic Pro, but I have no clue how to do any of this?!

If you all could help me out, that would be really appreciated! 😊

(I cannot stress enough how helpless I am with cellphones - your 90 year old great grandmother knows more than I do?!)

So do I need to turn on my mobile hotspot or will I be doing this via my mobile plan?

The link Hallux posted earlier shows you step by step how purchase an app from the App Store.

Your phone needs to be connected to the internet before the actual purchase.

I'm still on the fence about password managers, and prefer to memorize mine...

Little tiny tangent here since you are security and privacy conscious.

My password manager tells me I have 300 different logins saved. Each of those has a unique password. A bunch of them also have uniquely generated phrases for security questions that are saved in the entry.

I have a pretty good memory, but that is too many things. And I know I am unlikely to remember that the best man at my (nonexistent) wedding on site A was “Cooking River Leaf Drywall Hiccup” versus the “Clock Unlimited Cityscape Thunderstorm Offset” I used for the same question on site B six or eight months down the road.

Many password managers also keep track of which sites have breaches and can alert you if there was a breach reported that is newer than your password for that site. Not to mention how utterly rubbish the human brain is at producing truly random passwords in the first place. If you value your online security, a password manager of some kind is essential. You do NOT have to use one that stores data in the cloud of whatever. There are options for strongly encrypted vaults that do not leave your local device.

Since I have only ever used an AppleID to download macOS - and I may have purchased like Mountain Lion years ago - it sounds like I currently don't have anything linked/tied to my AppleID, right?

For instance, if I got another AppleID and re-installed macOS Sierra that I downloaded with my original AppleID, there wouldn't be any linkage nor any problems reinstalling things from my local copy, correct?

You likely don't have anything else linked, but it's worth confirming.

If you had two IDs and Sierra was linked to the older one, you would have to sign out of the newer one, in to the older one, visit Purchased, initiate the Sierra download, and switch back to the new one once finished. I have a similar system as my older ID has some apps we were gifted when I was an employee. It's a little tedious, but it works.

FWIW, Sierra, El Cap, and Yosemite can all now be downloaded directly from Apple, without using the MAS:

I've got a better suggestion if you want to get into video making:

Wait until the end of this month, when Canon's EOS R6 begins shipping.
Buy one.
I'd suggest the RF 24-105L F4 lens to go with it.

Now you'll have a bang-up video/still camera, great for 1080p and 4k.

Use iMovie to do the editing (free, and you probably have it already), or perhaps Final Cut Pro.

How's that? :p

I believe the only thing linked or grandfathered to my original account was Mountain Lion or maybe El Capitan.

And I have local copies of Sierra, High Sierra, and Mojave, and need to try and get Yosemite.

Because my purchased of Filmic Pro and FCPX will be for my startup, I decided to create a new AppleID on Saturday.

It actually wasn't too bad of a process, and seemed less intrusive than I recall back 5 years ago.

I did have to give my FUll name, Billing Address and Credit card details, but would have had to give those to make an online purchase anyways.

It also asked for my business e-mail, which is fine.

Fortunately it didn't get into all of this crap that Twitter demanded from me like a mobile #?!

So we'll see how that all works out, but I guess I'll be using this new "business" AppleID moving forward.

Oh, and I was able to successfully download Filmic Pro on my iPhone, get it installed, and start using it. (Not too bad for a grandpa...) ;-)

To answer this side note...

Well, actually a lot of what will determine where I go next with video is how my latest upgrade turns out.

I just dropped like $600-$700 on an iPhone rig, pro shotgun mic, and headset with mic that I can record into my Zoom H6.

In addition to figuring out if that will give me professional sound audio for my man-on-the-street interviews, there is also the challenge to see if I can still get the interviews I want WITHOUT scaring people away.

I fear that this new rig might start closing doors as far as people letting me walk up to them and get an interview.

Will find out the answer to this starting next week...

@Fishrrman,

So why do you suggest that DSLR for video making?
