It would be huge upgrade from a iPad 3 without the cost of a Pro. I mean unless you want to use a Pencil, have 4 speakers, or Smart connected there isn't a point to getting a Pro.

Oh no, I've no intention of getting the pro, I can't justify the price. I was debating between the 64gb air 2 and the 32gb iPad 2017. The air 2 64GB os only £20 more in the UK apple refurb shop.

I traded in my iPad 3 yesterday. The pricing of the new iPad 2017 is so low, and it's such a large upgrade over the iPad 3, that it didn't make sense to hold onto the iPad 3 any longer.

I haven't bought the replacement iPad yet. I'm going to wait for a few months to see if the iPad Pro's get refreshed, so I can see what the new features are.

Coming for a 32 gb 1st gen iPad, the current iPad is a huge improvement. I believe this iPad was designed for people just like me who only need a basic iPad capable of running most Apps(excluding stuff that require the Apple Pencil), while being reasonably priced and also having really great battery life. Couldn't ask for more.

I was in the similar situation. I needed 64GB so that meant I'd have to get the 128GB new iPad. I decided, with a bit of reluctance, to buy used Air 2 on eBay. Got a 128GB cellular in perfect condition and a few months of warranty remaining for not much more than the cost of the 32GB new iPad. It also included a keyboard which I was planning to buy anyway.

Yeah, the battery life is impressive. Felt like the iPad 4 again. Guess that's one of the benefits of using a chipset for the iPhone couple with the larger battery. :D

I have the same model and am facing the same dilemma. I can still do most of what I want it for (watching video, reading books), but it absolutely chokes on modern webpages, so it's no longer useful for the light browsing I used to do on it.

But the current models just don't feel like they offer that much for an upgrade after nearly 5 years. The memory capacity has only doubled. The lack of weight decrease since the first Air is disappointing, as is the lack of reflective coating in the cheaped-out new non-pro model. I don't use or want to use the camera or speakers or a stylus.

I'm on the fence over whether to buy now or hold out another year for something that represents a better upgrade for my money.

Currently own an A1416, iPad 3rd Gen. Seeing how I can't update past IOS 9.3.5, and 16GB is limiting, would now be the time to upgrade to the latest release, the iPad 2017? Not sure how long people hold onto their iPads, so I'm just curious. Mainly do games, read books and magazines, and surf the web with the iPad.

Time to say Good bye 3rd gen iPad and say Hello new 2017 iPad

I passed my old ipad 3 to the relatives 6 months ago when I got a new Air 2. The ipad 3 is a monster in weight compared to the Air 2. The Air 2 is a thing of beauty and perhaps it's TOO good a device which is why Apple took a step backwards and cobbled together the Ipad 5.

I picked up a new iPad Pro some days ago. My previous iPad was the 3rd gen. Main difference is size and weight. The screen is also better. And of course is faster. Overall benefits are not negligible!

Then the iPad 4 came soon after to rub salt into the wound of those who bought the iPad 3

Yeah...that was painful and left a bad taste in my mouth for a long time. I too continued to use the iPad 3 until recently buying the new iPad 2017. My taste is now back.. ;). Great upgrade and worth it!

The thing is A4 (on iPhone) didn't really do worse compared to its predecessors. It just received longer iOS support. Based on performance of my previous iPhones, I cut off updates to just the next major firmware (iOS 5).

The iPad 2 (A5) and iPad 3 (A5X), ideally you wouldn't go beyond iOS 7. Honestly, I wouldn't even go beyond iOS 6. They really didn't do well with iOS 8+. It wasn't until the iPhone 5 (A6) and Air (A7) that we started getting better longevity without severe performance impact. There was slowdown, that's inevitable. It just wasn't as awful as with older models.
Iphone 4S is the slowest iphone of all time. Slower than it predecessor , the Iphone 4 . IMO, all A5 devices and A5X devices should have ended support on IOS 8. Iphone 4 ended on IOS 7(A4 processor). So , A5 devices should have ended support on IOS 8. Updating A5 devices to IOS 9 was a huge mistake that Apple has commited.
I am wondering if Apple will continue to give IOS updates for A7 devices next year(IOS 12) . or it will stop on IOS 11.

I've owned both and the 4S is definitely faster than the 4 (with both running the same firmware version). The problem is the jump to iOS 7 required a significant jump in resources (GPU in particular) that the A5 and older just didn't have. Even the iPad 4 saw noticeable lag/stutter.

IOS 7 was the last IOS version usable for Iphone 4S and A5 devices. However , if u compare an Iphone 4S with IOS 9 is definetely worse than an Iphone 4 with IOS 7.

That's a problem of software, not hardware. :p

Personally, I kept my iPhone 4 at iOS 5 and iPhone 4S at iOS 6. UI is very responsive. Alas, most new apps aren't compatible. :)
