Was waiting on this announcement before I bought a new macbook. Made the decision on what to get real easy.

The 8/256 base is not enough for me, and the jump to 16/512 comes to $1699. For $50 more right now, I can get a 14" MBP Pro on sake that's better in almost every way, other than being ever so slightly thicker and heavier.
I think the 14 to 15 jump is a bigger jump than 13 to 14, FWIW.

No external dual-monitor support?
This is something pretty much all the modern Intel consumer grade Macs supported (of course Apple wants you to upgrade to the Pro models)
This is my critical feature. I far prefer the MacBook Air for almost every other reason (and bought them regularly before the switch to Apple silicon), but for now I need to buy the MacBook Pro as it supports dual monitors. As soon as this is added to the MacBook Air, that will once again be my go-to machine.

Ugh I just bought a 16" MBP 16/1TB four days ago. My use case is just heavy browsing, some Photoshop and Final Cut, text editing, and emails but would like to future-proof as I keep my laptops for around 7 years. The 15" MBA could probably do all of that, but I'm a sucker for the high res screen and speakers. Are both of those significantly worse on the MBA?
The Pro's speakers are quite a step up from those found on the Air, the screen is somewhat better (both are excellent) but don't forget that the Pro has double the base RAM and SSD storage along with a SDXC card reader.

The current base Pro with the M2 chip is more futureproof compared with the Air, thanks in large part the the extra RAM.

I was planning on upgrading the SSD and the RAM on the Air to 24GB/1TB. Even after doing that, the Air is almost $900 cheper than the Pro making the decision even more difficult. Do we know if RAM and SSD speeds are slower on the Air vs. Pro?

I have not seen anything comparing the RAM and SSD speeds. This said, I would not expect the Air to be faster compared with the Pro. The Pro was released only a few months ago.

Now that this has been officially announced with specs available, I'm more open to trying to snag a M1 or M2 13" Air at a discount. The specs look completely identical, but they've nicely/forcefully included the 10-Core GPU upgrade and added the 2 additional speakers. The 15" Air is now only .2 lbs lighter than the 14" Pro... and then we add the lack of multiple monitor support.

Glad I got rid of my last gen Air with the Intel chip, but this doesn't look like the right buy for me o_O

I also noticed that

That's so close on weight that it really behooves a close investigation of the 14" options (preowned, refurbished, EDU store, etc) -- as the 14" MBP, other than being thicker than the MBA 15", is a vastly better machine in every other measurable way.

Somebody needs to tell Apple that speaker grills are a functional element. You can't just omit them and expect the audio to come out nice and clear. 🔇

I can’t believe they lowered the m2 13” price but not the m1

Making this decision even more difficult for me… I don’t want the 15”. But 13” m1 or m2… plan to upgrade to 16/1tb. Now they are only $100 apart. Performance is practically the same, wedge and notch free design of the m1 appeals to me, and seems a little more sturdy/durable from my experiences holding them both.. i guess the only advantages in the m2 are magsafe and possibly an extra year of software support. I really thought they’d lower the price of the m1. Looks like they’re really trying to unload these m2 airs.

Honestly the biggest surprise for me is the weight: 3.3 lbs.

The 2" increase from the 14" MBP to 16" MBP increases the weight 1.2lbs. Using this to extrapolate, the 1.7" increase from the 13.6" MBA to 15.3" MBA should be 1.02 lbs heavier. Instead it's just 0.6 lbs. I wonder if this speaks more to the weight of the mini-LED display on MBPs.

Thinner laptops are lighter, even as they get wider.

Next time somebody complains that Jony Ive was obsessed with thin and light, you know better.

I was so excited about this new 15" MBA and was gonna trade in my MBP 14", but the tiny difference in weight compared with my MBP and inferior specs (no pro motion, no XDR) and absence of significant upgrade (still no wifi 6e, still stuck at M2) - is just not worth it. The weight of this item doesn't deserve the name MBA. I just got an OLED screen x1 carbon with wifi 6e, dual sim/e-sim 5g wwan that I run t-mobile and AT&T that is light and portable at 2.48 lbs, though the battery sucks compared to apple silicon, it is the product I put in my travel bag when travelling.

From a value perspective, one can still get a similar priced MBP 14" with M1pro but with pro motion, XDR display, 512gb ssd rather than the presumably slower ssd base model MBA 15". This argument has been made previously for 13" M2 MBA though seems still valid for the 15" even more so give the smaller delta in weight compared to MBP.
