In a crowded place (subway, club, theme park) couldn’t this be used maliciously to get to know someone’s name without their consent? So you’re standing up on a packed train carriage and a creep just bumps their phone onto yours and peeks at your screen to know your personal details. How is that preventable?
Pretty sure your lock screen will need to be unlocked for this to work.

Great! I really missed this from Android. It's one of those things you don't often use but you're glad you have when you need it.

If only Apple and Google would make it work across platforms one day...

Name Drop: So I'll be able to do the thing I could do with my early-2000's Palm PDA? Fascinating.

Bingo. PalmOS 3.0 (1998) added support for IrDA and added the "beam" feature allowing direct device-to-device transfer of all kinds of data, including contacts.

It was very popular at the time. So 25 years later, Apple introduces the same thing. But not as good because you need to bring the phones very close to each other, not just point them at each other.

I'm guessing there will be a peer-peer invite issued first. I do wonder how close "close together" actually is with effective range for both devices.

I feel like this has been available on android for years...?
And now if only Apple and droid would play nicely together, we could all get back to being in the current, rather than stuck in the 80's.

And yeah, I know, it is mostly Apple that are being petulant spoilt brats, not Android.
