If I was a parent I'd get my kid a Switch Lite and a Nintendo Switch Online subscription. They'd get a lot more fun and enjoyment out of that with the back catalog of classic Nintendo games than just slightly enhanced versions of mobile games they already have.

Hell my nephews when they visit the only thing they wanna do is play games on my Steam Deck instead of playing stuff on their phones.
Do they go outside? So many kids nowadays (ok, it’s been like this for awhile) spend far too many hours infront of those black mirrors. There’s an entire REAL WORLD to explore and play in.

Ok...good for you. I pay for this and it keeps my kid entertained plenty for the small amount of time she plays games. There's a Switch in our house and it's been collecting dust for the past 6 months. She used it once. That sure was money well spent🤦‍♂️ 🤷‍♂️ Almost like different people like different things.

I'll say it again...not everything has to be, or will be, catered to what you want. It's not "one size fits all".

You're proving Jack Black's song correct

You don't have to be afraid to play video games anymore just because you're an adult, especially with the amount of greatness coming out of PlayStation over the entire PS4 generation.

You know the Nintendo Switch has a lot of games you can play with your wife together. There's It Takes Two, a co-op platformer about a couple forced to fix their relationship, and that game won game of the year 2021.

You can play Mario Kart 8 Deluxe together, or Super Smash Bros Ultimate. Or get some friends and have a fun time with Mario Party. This month Super Mario Bros Wonder is coming out and that you can play together. Warioware is also a really fun game to play together with many different wacky microgames.

Then there's unforgettable single player experiences like Zelda Breath of the Wild (which won GOTY) or Tears of the Kingdom, or Metroid Prime Remastered, or the upcoming remakes of Super Mario RPG or Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door. Fire Emblem Three Houses also has an amazing story that really stuck with people.

That sounds like a ton of fun! I'm wondering if I should try it out....

Yes kids go outside too lol. Are we still doing these boomer ass takes almost three decades later? Sheesh as if I didn't hear that crap enough when I was a kid, now the next gen is being forced to hear this too.

Graphics has nothing to do with it. The games in Apple Arcade are mainly just remasters of mobile games we already played. There's better pick up and play games (especially on the Nintendo Switch) that are vastly better than what Apple Arcade offers.
I have a switch and also pay for the upper tier of NSO. While I like it fine, I would not say it's *vastly* better than Apple Arcade. The Nintendo classics catalog is pretty lackluster, outside of the tentpole titles like Marios and Zeldas. The contemporary games are pretty overpriced and the one's that shine on the switch are very often just mobile games or could be on iOS easily. Unless you're really into JRPG's, then the switch tends to collect dust. Slay the Spire is a perfect example of a great game that works well on the Switch, but is also on Apple Arcade, which means that I can play it on Apple TV, iPad, or iPhone... slap on a Backbone controller, and it basically IS a switch.

Apple today announced that four new games will be added to Apple Arcade this month, including NBA 2K24 Arcade Edition, Cut the Rope 3, Jeopardy! World Tour+, and Crossword Jam+.
Umm... not that I'm ungrateful, but, um, yeah.

Very tiny update it seems...

- Not interested
- Already played CTR and am bored of the general concept (also I hate puzzle games)
- Hate trivia games
- Hate puzzle games

You should all give Fantasian a chance, especially if you enjoyed the PSX Final Fantasy games, a quarter of century ago.

Wait. A quarter of a century. Dang, I’m getting old.

Yes you should. Nintendo's catalog on the Switch are legendary. Smash Ultimate is the biggest game in the series yet with every fighter ever in the history of Smash being present, including big third party guest characters such as Joker from Persona 5, Cloud and Sephiroth from Final Fantasy 7, the Hero from Dragon Quest, Kazuya Mishima from Tekken, Steve from Minecraft, and even Sora from Kingdom Hearts.

And I haven't even mentioned Nintendo's smash hit single player and multiplayer series Splatoon, a different kind of shooter where you are a squid/octopus humanoid shooting ink on the floor. Woomy

And that's just a taste of what Nintendo had. PlayStation has even more greatness. There's Insomniac's Spider-Man which has it's sequel coming this month that is the best superhero game ever made, a game that is tailor made to make you feel like Spider-Man.
There's Ghost of Tsushima, a samurai simulator set during the attempted Mongol Empire Invasion of Japan. The game is a giant love letter to classic Kurosawa samurai movies, to the point there's a Kurosawa Mode that makes the game black and white and Japanese voice acting only.
Then there's God of War, a father and son story about Kratos and his son Atreus grieving over the loss of his mother, on a journey across Norse mythology to scatter her ashes, followed by the sequel Ragnarok in which Kratos and Atreus must kill Odin.
And of course I can't forget The Last of Us, a series that I'm sure needs no introduction.

And I haven't even gotten to the third party offerings, like the Like a Dragon series, a Japanese crime drama that is packed with twists and turns and so much fun stuff to do that will make you both laugh and cry. (Start with Yakuza 0, which is set during the later years of the 80s Economic bubble and is a prequel to the entire series. The ending will make you cry like a baby.) Or Persona 5, a extremely stylish RPG where you are a student in Tokyo framed for a crime you didn't commit, having to be a model citizen by day, but a phantom thief by night going into the twisted minds of horrible people to change their hearts.

Greatness awaits

maybe we'll see console game ports eventually included with this due to the newly released 15 Pro capabilities. Resident Evil etc
Considering the selection of games we’ve seen since Arcade launched, I don’t think Apple wants anything AAA or “serious” in their line-up.

Like the rest of Apple’s content streaming services, Arcade is a sort of family friendly experience where most games are attractive to younger kids and teens, or can be enjoyed by parents and their children together.

Arcade probably isn’t enough on its own for most. But if you get Apple One and do family sharing with Music, TV+, iCloud and Fitness, then it’s a pretty good deal when compared to paying for a selection of equivalent services, like Spotify, Disney, Nintendo, etc.

Not that Apple’s content is as abundant or popular as those. But it would be comparable while costing much less.

Apple should finally live up to the name and bring some Arcade/Retro classics to the platform for us older folks. iOS is the only platform that actively makes it hard to run emulations of classic games. Why????

Apple being out of touch and possibly not wanting to threaten Nintendo's wrath, ignoring the fact emulators are available in the Google Play Store.

Yeah don’t see myself dropping Starfield or Tears of the Kingdom any time soon for this. But thanks anyway.

Speaking of, before a staff meeting, one of them was playing Starfield on his Galaxy S23, with an Xbox controller no less, and was having a blast. (Now if only we could have Xbox Game Pass for Cloud on iPhone...)

$5 a month for what is primarily remasters of mobile games we played 10 years ago is not that good an offer when compared to others. There's a reason Apple doesn't want Xbox Game Pass on the App Store.
Hardly anyone is spending $5/month for Arcade on its own. It's a value-add for Apple One — i.e. I want Apple Music and need the iCloud storage, but the handful of games I play from Arcade are a nice bonus.

Xbox Game Pass is a different beast. I pay for it as well, and I like having access to it, but I don't think it's comparable. Its library changes much more frequently, with favorite games disappearing at the end of each month. And many of the games (even Microsoft's own titles, like Forza Horizon) are effectively free trials with tons of DLC that you still have to pay for.

Thanks for your time, energy, and information. Greatly appreciated and it shows you have compassion I only wish to have someday!

Where are all the raytraced games? Or games that actually use the performance of the iPhone 13s and older?

Nope! I'm just not a l33t g4m3r with a bunch of LEDs on their computers that obsesses how many polygons make up their games and how to maximize FPS.

It's peace of mind, simple games that are easy to play and have fun with for a few weeks. That's what gaming is all about!
Exactly! It's not for everyone, but I did enjoy it when I was subscribing to Apple One. There's some very fun games in there. Unfortunately, they changed the pricing and I decided to cancel it.

I'm sure the cost is high and negotiating these contracts are a pain in the ass—and I'm willing to bet that's why this hasn't happened yet—but Apple should really throw some money to publishers up front to secure Resident Evil Village, Assassin's Creed Mirage, Death Stranding, etc as Apple Arcade games.

From a usability and discovery standpoint, it's strange enough to have two dedicated tabs in the App Store for games, but it's all the more bewildering when one has a mix of $59.99 games and IAP-addled garbage apps, and the other is full of "exciting" announcements about decade-old mobile game rereleases.

I occasionally play some of these rereleases, and the surprise exclusive new games are solid (if a little infrequent), but Apple Arcade occupies a very strange place in the App Store. I'm sure it's contributing to Apple's services strategy in some way—why else would it get Newsroom updates and a dedicated App Store tab?—but I certainly don't understand it.
