If I am a high school student, can I also receive the discount, or is there some kind of verification that I need, because I found my school on the site.

Back to School Sale Apple sale confirmed

Just came in from Apple store with the intention to buy a macbook. Guy asked me if I was in a rush. I asked why. He said "Around this time over the past 3 years the back to school took place. We don't know when it will happen exactly but it should be within the next couple of days. It's definitely around the end of May (which is now) and or very early June"

Obviously I GTFout of there thanking him for the info and I guess I'm gonna have to stick to my pc for another couple of days. All for a good cause.

Sale Confirmed

When does Apple usually have their back to school sales where they give $100-200 off of the laptops and also throw in an iPod touch or something like that?

Last year I noticed that I could use the credit towards an iPod Classic, but this time I was wondering if I could use it toward an iPod Nano. I don't really have a use for a Touch or Classic (well maybe as a portable storage device), since I'm planning on getting the next iPhone immediately after the release, so I would rather have an iWatch.

Holy crap I would totally rock an iWatch... but I have to get the iPod Touch as a present for someone. *sigh* lol

Yes, you can receive the discount as a high school student. If you buy it from the store they will require some sort of proof.

You could show them any of these things...

Report Card
Some letter or something in writing with your name and school on it.
Student ID

Online, there is no verification process.

Two weeks, an apple employee told me. They said to wait to buy a laptop when I went to the store.

Employees don't know anything about this or anything regarding a release date.

Never live in the past but always learn from it.

I just asked online live support for the hell of it if they knew when the Back to School promotion would start. They said "We do not know if or when the Back to School promotion will begin." Then I said thanks and ex'd out. haha

The guy in my store seemed pretty sure, he told my friend the same when she went in the other day too. But we'll see in two weeks time I guess!

That would just be a coincidence. Apple Store employees don't know nothing more than we do. There's no reason Apple would tell them, they would just risk it being leaked out. Even when they receive new products, the labels say nothing and the employees can't know what's inside the box until they open it at a specific date and time. Same goes with the promotional material. Nothing clear on the label except a "DO NOT OPEN BEFORE XXXXXX XXth at XX:00". Employees would lose their job just for that. The best way to keep a secret is to not tell people who don't need to know. Apple figured that out by now.

So I did some digging because 1) I'm going crazy waiting for the Back to School sale and the new MBA and 2) I'm super bored.

Follows are the dates in the last 5 years of when the Back to School promotion began.
  • 2010 - May 25th (Tuesday)
  • 2009 - May 27th (Wednesday)
  • 2008 - June 3rd (Tuesday)
  • 2007 - June 5th (Tuesday)
  • 2006 - June 5th (Monday)
Next are the dates in the last 5 years of when WWDC was held.
  • 2010 - June 7th (Monday)
  • 2009 - June 8th (Monday)
  • 2008 - June 9th (Monday)
  • 2007 - June 11th (Monday)
  • 2006 - August 7th (Monday)
While there may not be any sort of correlation between WWDC and the Back to School sale, I think it's particularly interesting that the Back to School sale consistently began before WWDC. In 2010, it began 13 days before WWDC. In 2009, 12 days. In 2008, 6 days. 2007, 6 days. And 2006, almost 2 months (let's just call this a statistical anomaly).

Also, within the last 5 years, the B2S promo has always began early in the week (excluding Sunday). So it's possible we see it come tomorrow (Wednesday), but more likely than not, in the upcoming weeks on a Tuesday.

I'd also peg it for coming sooner than later, if you go by the trends at least. I'm not sure if the release of Lion really has much to do with the B2S promo, since buying a Mac after June 4th (correct me as I don't particularly remember correctly) gets you that free (I think?) upgrade to Lion anyway, which of course, is strictly downloadable (no need for Apple to slip upgrade discs in customer's boxes/bags anymore).

Lastly, for those waiting on a refreshed MBA (like myself), I think it's interesting to hear on the forums that Apple would wait 'til after the B2S promo. It seems as if the argument here is that Apple doesn't want to release a new product and wants to nix the rest of their dated inventory. However, last year, 4 refreshes (excluding the iPhone) came during the Back to School promotion:
  • Mac Mini - June 15th (Tuesday)
  • iMac - July 27th (Tuesday)
  • Mac Pro - July 27th
  • Apple Cinema Display - July 27th
So thusly, I'd say it's entirely feasible we see an MBA refresh sometime between the 14th (next Tuesday) and July 26th (last Tuesday in July).

Anywho, just brainstorming ;)

I am also waiting for the MBA refresh intently.

But, the items you listed as being refreshed during the B2SS are irrelevant because those are not portable devices, they are not really meant for students, as most students are constantly carrying their devices.

Sorry to bust the bubble, I could be wrong I guess

They were still applicable for the Back to School sale though, were they not? (I'm really not sure)

EDIT: Also, the B2S promo is for faculty also, whom I'd imagine comprises quite a large chunk of Apple's B2S sales.

The B2S promo is to get rid of old iPods before the September update. Apple hopes that people will opt for a higher capacity iPod, thus spending more. (I did this last year with a 64GB).

The last time I bought a Apple laptop, I was waiting for the Santa Rosa update, and guess what? It happened in the summer during the B2S program.

I'm really beginning to wonder whether the new MBA will be eliglible for the BtoS promo. With a fairly low entry level price, I don't know if they'll include it. I thought I read somewhere that the 11" was not included in their country that had already begun.

MBA is pretty aggressively priced as it is compare to competitions like Samsung series 9 laptops. They generally costs 200-300 dollars more than MBA.

I think it's almost arbitrarily comparative. It definitely comes down to what people value the most and what they're willing to pay. I mean, yeah, assuming all things equal, a new 13in Samsung series 9 will run you $1650 but that includes 4GB of RAM, a backlit keyboard, anti-glare display, and a 3 year warranty. A base MBA updated to 4GB RAM and a 3 year warranty runs you $1648. So, $2 extra for a backlit keyboard and anti-glare display (let alone other usefuls that may exist), makes it sound like a good deal.

But then of course, it's not running OSX.
