great news! :D

Apple this morning began sending notices that it has started shipping at least Core i5-equipped versions of the 27-inch iMac. The company's first quad-core consumer desktop is now listed for Electronista and other readers as "prepared for shipment" with an unspecified ship date. Such scheduling suggests that the earliest orders may arrive within the week.

The system has similar specifications to the regular Core 2 Duo model, such as the 2560x1440 display, 1TB hard drive and 4GB of RAM but requires a fundamentally different mainboard as the Core i5 and i7 have built-in memory controllers and an overall new architecture. They also use a significantly more advanced Radeon HD 4850 graphics chipset. Apple has never directly explained its reasons for pushing these quad-core iMacs to November, but one or both changes in the platform are commonly believed to be the cause.

While shipping the quad-core iMacs, Apple has nonetheless warned that new orders for 27-inch Core 2 Duo models are facing a shipping delay of 7-10 business days. No explanation has yet been given for the delay, though demand is a potential cause as the iMac remains the top-selling Mac through the online Apple Store.

thanks user sdyates2001 for finding out!

I can't wait to se the benchmarks of this hardware. Though it shouldn't be significantly different from the ones we've had for months.

On some benchmarks from IBM-PCs you'll see, that sometimes a dual-core cpu is better than some "Q"-quadcores.

I think you'll not see a big difference between the older iMacs and the new ones.

Must resist checking order status ever 30 seconds!

:)

I feel like a kid at Christmas, even though I am paying for it.

*hums White Christmas*

Turbo Boost should take care of the fast dual core vs. slower quad core issues from now on. You're better off just getting the midrange quad core under Nehalem/Westmere in a desktop.

I don't get it. Haven't people's orders been Prepared for Shipment for a while now? Has anyone actually received a tracking number?

The prepared for shipment note is just for the telephone automated order status system. Although its unclear through the Electornista article, I am hoping that these are status changes on the online orders status.

However, just as an FYI for all the other forum members, I placed a second order for some Apple accessories a couple of days ago, and although the items are backordered, the automated system still says "prepared for shipment". Online status still says "Not yet shipped".
