"iMore leaves the stage at a pivotal crossroads for online publishing, where the battle for readers' time and attention is more demanding than ever before, and the aforementioned AI advances and search discovery methods further complicate the playing field," wrote iMore's final editor-in-chief Gerald Lynch, in a farewell blog post.
I think the real culprit was less "AI and search discovery," and more that the articles felt weirdly short and bland, the website wasn't particularly pleasant to look at, and hardly anyone ever commented on anything that got posted.

Whatever faults MacRumors may or may not have, at least it's actually enjoyable to read, and the engagement here is crazy high. 👍

Don't forget Visor Central! (I go back to the Palm Central days, but like Maz Kanata once said, that's a story for another time.)

I wouldn't feel sorry for them if they do. The shadow banning they do over there is atrocious. At least when I get banned here the mods let it be known and give a reason. 😉

Apple Insider has never banned me, but 9to5 Mac is extremely hostile if you hold views that are in any way "not of the left" and you express those views in the articles written by Ben Lovejoy. He and other writers there, have a visceral hatred of Elon Must/X and woe be unto you if you comment on their stories being extremely biased and inflammatory. I'm shadowbanned there, if I try to comment on stories, I can see them but no one else can.

And the folks here are kind and we share knowledge like no other site does.

Does anyone remember a site that shut down a couple of years ago? I think it was called OS X tips or Mac OS tips or something. It had a blue theme to it I remember that.

They were good for years. I used to regularly visit them and their partners as I explored early tech as someone else here mentioned earlier, Android Central, Visor Central followed by Precentral, Crackberry. I used to love when they’d all attend CES. Great writers moved on, tech giants Apple and Google shut down Palm and BlackBerry, and the writing at imore declined as the base of those writers moved on. They used to do great content on YouTube and I enjoyed their podcasts, but as their creators moved on, their content didn’t keep the same quality. It’s a shame. I wish all of them the best over there.
Meantime, Macrumors has been stepping it up keeping updated content, great YouTube channel and podcasts….

I might’ve visited the site a few times over the years. Nothing beats MacRumors, though.

I like how active the community is here. Other sites, like AppleInsider and 9to5Mac, don’t have a very active community. I read those sites too, but this one is my number 1 site for Apple related news.

I can’t remember how or when I discovered this site, but I remember following the live channel on Twitter about 15 years ago to keep up with what was happening in the Apple keynote (when they didn’t stream them).

I occasionally visited this site, having heard about it so much on MacBreak Weekly, but their very bland design overhaul that made the site mostly white (with no dark mode) was the main reason I stopped going there. My eyes! 🙈

Yup. That's another one. At one time Ben and I would have a good back and forth on topics, until something happened about 3 1/2 years ago. Then he completely shut it down and locked himself in to one very specific view of things. I'm shadow banned there as well. 😄

At least here it seems like an all or nothing. 😉

TBH, I've never even heard of them until now.
I vaguely recall them, now that I read this article about them going away. But yeah - I bet I only visited that site 1 or 2 times when someone provided a direct link to some user guide or review that posted there.

I feel like especially these days? There's really just not all THAT much new Apple and Mac-centric news to distribute in the first place. Every time Apple releases something new, it's all over the mainstream press and tech sites/blogs within minutes/hours. The real value of web sites for the Mac faithful tends to be in the niches. Go deep with information the other guys aren't making the effort to do, such as performance benchmark testing everything or focusing solely on one aspect like music creation/editing with Apple's gear (or even rumors!).

How is windowscentral still around?

I used to use they regularly when I used windows phone but that was literally 80 percent of the reason why anyone was there.

Windows phone has been gone almost a decade and all they post is about windows and depressing Xbox new and their forums are dead.

I recall a post on iMore in 2014 where Rene Ritchie wrote an article stating how the Microsoft Surface would fail, his logic was "People want iPads".

I love my series 10 Apple Watch and my 16 Pro Max, but I had a surface 1 pro at the time (that actually still works for basic tasks only, but still works) and now use a surface 7 pro. For someone that grew up on windows 95 and above, windows will always be my go to when it comes to the need for a computer. I do not even have a desktop at home anymore since the 16 Pro Max can do a lot and what ever else I need goes to the Surface.

I commented on the article and suggested that he do a pros and cons of a surface pro v iPad, I said failing to do so is just fanboy grandstanding given how limited the iPad was at the time. He hit me back with some dismissive one liner using argument from authority because he's the Mr. Apple iMore expert. That was the last time I ever went to iMore, been Macrumors since then. The community here is better, and so is the information in the articles.

Good riddance

I never liked their site because it seemed too influenced by advertising and basically seemed like it shilled. A site like that, or like Mac Rumors, needs to not be a shill site to be relevant. And ads can negatively influence any site, or the coverage within the site.
