A Stoned Throw From Ground Zero
I realize that Crucial is one of Macrumor's supporting partners, but
they are charging an extra premium to guarantee Apple compatibility.

I discovered this pricing RAM for my own system.

This is what I found helping another member with their iBook RAM upgrade

Crucial Apple guaranteed

Same exact specs with generic part #

OR...

Newegg's price on the exact same Crucial RAM

All three choices come with Crucial's lifetime warrantee.

Crucial is a division of Micron.

The reason why I decided to get the memory from Apple is that I've read here that some non-apple approved memory have given trouble (like NoVaMac)

Keep in mind my problems stem from taking advantage of "cheap" RAM (after rebate with Centon memory from CompUSA). To be fair I could have paid Apple for the same memory and had the same problem (a bad stick of RAM). The difference is that it took Centon almost a week to get back to me. IMO OWC would have answered my concerns in under an hour.

OWC sells several 1 GB modules, priced from $112 to $149 Which one do you recommend?

As someone said the Samsung memory is what Apple is said to use. And that is what I chose for my PB and eMac.

As to comments about Crucial. I will never buy from them due to past use of variable pricing based on "cookies" or whatever.

What about buying Applecare via auction sites such as Ebay? Are these legit? Some good discounts to be had.

The risk is that the Apple Care sold on eBay could have been registered already. I would suggest only buying Apple Care through an authorized reseller.

You should probably keep the factory RAM until you're sure your machine is completely trouble free.

Even though you could sell your stock 512 DIMM, it may pay for itself
if your machine needs repair.

In my case it was great to be able to go back to a Ram stick that I knew would work. It saved me a wasted trip to Apple to only be told that it was my RAM.

sorry, this is somehow off topic. but i ask anyway.

when i order online i can select "order online from a specific apple store".

what benefit has that? do they deliver the stuff to this apple store and i pick it up like in circuit citys "in store pickup" service?

From what I understand, you can have an online order sent to an Apple Retail store for pick up.

The only benefit I can think of is that you don't have to be at home to accept delivery. Otherwise all other rules apply.

which DDR2 to buy

OK, after some thought I decided to order 2 x 1 GB (at one point I was going to go with 1.5GB config, but I decided to go for 2GB). I'll keep my original 512MB stick in case my PB needs to go back to the mothership. So this is what I want to order:

OWC seems to have a good reputation among the folks here, so I am thinking this should be OK. Anybody here used this stick in their PB? I am kind of hasitating to pull the trigger on the order, I need some encouragement from you guys

Can't seem to get the page to open tonight. But if it helps, after my experience with CompUSA and Centon - I will only buy from OWC.
