For that kind of options, i still have my pc around. The idea of iMac is a unified computer. U want free modding, u wouldn't buy an iMac. Really sir, i dont want another thread of Mac vs PC anymore.

Yeah, I admit the HDD is not freely upgradeable. But do you think any regular user out there willing to torn their iMac and upgrade HDD

Even if apple dont use this design, changing iMac HDD still aint that easy. Get it?

Oh I get it. I was just taken back by your willingness to let Apple dictate your computer experience. But hey if it makes you happy then who am I to judge?

Sorry OP, that is apple's way of saying yes they are proprietary.

Of course third party hard drive companies MAY develop a compatible version through some obscure apple qualification program.

However, do you think hard drive companies are going to be that interested in developing hard drives that hit less than 2% of the market or are they going to be interested in developing hard drives that have been used for the last oh 5-6 years that hit 98% of the market?

Its another way for apple to control. There is no real reason for it, just like there was no reason to change compatibility with the video components for the iPod Classic in 2007, just like there was no reason to throw in a DRM chip for the 3rd gen shuffle head phone control.

Interesting, though I'd like to see a more direct and public comment from Apple on this. It would be great if this is a new standard, Apple has done a few open standards before, mini Display Port jack being the one that comes to mind the quickest. I'm not sure how many other companies would benefit from this, anyone that makes an integrated display/computer I suppose, but Apple is the dominant player in that segment. Maybe home or small business RAID-type devices might benefit.

Wow .. one more proof that iMac using component that hasn´t been in the market yet

First Z68 chipset, and then custom designed HDD .. how sweet is that, and yet :apple: hater say iMac is overpriced while using beyond hi-end components

Good job :apple:

Oh please. I drink the kool-aid with the best of them, but a redesigned HD is not awesome like the Z68 chipset. It doesn't bring increased functionality, or anything else, it just makes the HD work like it was supposed to work in the first place.

Hard drives aren't supposed to overheat. They don't in every other computer. And yet, instead of redesigning their computer to allow the use of a normal hard drive, Apple introduces a Pain-in-the-ass-HD which I need to have to use in an iMac. And you know it will cost more, not to mention that I can't get one now.

Someone is going to raise the point of the blade SSD for the MBA. That was necessary for the MBA form factor. This is way, way dumber, and it's not even like the iMac's form factor is a big issue like the MBA.

Well, FWIW I have not heard of any iMac HDD overheating but I'm not exactly in the know.

Apple builds an all-in-one and it works fine.

There are people who want to mod it. That's fine, but I figure if you are prepared to open up a brand-new iMac and tinker with its innards, shorting a few pins on a connector isn't gonna a big deal for you either.

So what's the beef?
