Apple deleted my harddrive for no reason

So i sent my computer in because it has the notorious buzzing noise which most 1st gen macbook pros have, and apple reformmated by harddrive.

Can someone please explain how reformatting a harddrive can fix this problem?

i now have none of my old documents, photos, or music, and am highly agitated.
 
that is what they do. didnt you read the papers before you sent it in? it specifically says to backup your info. if it were that important you would have done so anyways.


as far as them doing that, it is standard practice
 
Yes I realize that and I feel like a dumbass, but at the same time, how does reformatting my harddrive fix a buzzing sound?
 
This really isn't the forum you need to be posting on if you want sympathy for this problem. Search the forum and read a few of the threads and you will understand that most people will not give you sympathy at all. Some will make fun, but mostly they will tell you, you should have backed up.

As far as reformatting the drive to fix a buzzing issue? They probably need to install a utility to check the hardware. If there wasn't enough space or they didn't have the password then they would have wiped the drive.

And not to rub it in, but what do you think Dell would have done? HP? Lenovo? In order to diagnose a problem, they have to eliminate software problems. That means wipe the drive, start fresh. It isn't an Apple thing.
 
By the way. You should always back up your documents.
Buy an external drive and make it a habit.

Actually, I believe Lenovo will let you keep the harddrive if you send it if for a repair. So you won't have this problem.
 
Yes I should have backed up. That was just plain stupid of me. But at the same time, their solution had no results.

I have sent my computer in three times for this problem, and everytime nothing has been fixed.
 
Was it fixed the last time? Maybe there isn't a problem then, could it be you want to hear the sound and so your mind tells you that you're hearing it?

I am not trying to accuse you of lying or anything, but it has been known to happen.

Uh, the sound is very obvious. I also had my MacBook in for repair three times, the last time they switched the logic board and said that it won't get better than that. It was still as loud as before. So, to me, Apple said the sound was normal. Are people using these computers deaf or something?!

The harddrive on my dad's Lenovo was making a lot of "death clicks." He sent it out and they replaced the HD and ghosted over the old data.

Nope. I own a C2D MacBook and have used the Macbook Pro CD. There is no squeal or buzzing or anything. Although I may be deaf. I like to think I am not I can hear most things at least.

I owned three C2D MacBooks (and the first one was in for repair three times, three times not the charm!), all of them whined. Maybe you can't hear the frequency or, like you said, you're hearing ain't all that good. It's coming from under the top left corner of the keyboard (on the MacBook, I don't know where it's located on the MacBook Pro).
 
Why would they need to erase the harddrive. if they are computer pros they should of just taken out the harddrive put in one of theirs and then did their tests. Any fool can take out a harddrive. I agree you should always back up the data. But when you pay a high priced laptop from the best company that is always so cocky about how they are the best they should be able to not have to reformat the drive. Maybe if the computer didn't make the buzzing sound in the first place then zero info would have been lost.

Not really... all hardware fails. Besides... have you seen how to remove a HDD from a MBP.. it aint no easy feat.

Then perhaps Apple should have... erm... designed their computers better.

What you are saying is like Ford telling customers whose cars need repairs that it cannot be done because they choose to weld the bonnet shut to maintain a sleek and seamless exterior...
 
You shouldn't even be sending in a unit with your data on it at all, let alone expect to get it back exactly the same.

I mean... :confused:
 
it wasnt too smart to send it in without backing it up, but reformatting the harddrive makes no sense to me.

and my hearing is quite fine, actually. it is just that when i see my friends macbook pros, or the ones at the apple store, and they are dead silent, it makes me want mine to be dead silent as well because i paid the same price for the computer and expect the same performance of other peoples.

while we are on the subject of backing things up, what do products do you recommend for backing up information?

Hmmm.... Not really... more like someone complaining to Ford because they got a flat tire just as their radio started shooting sparks... when Ford makes neither the tire nor the radio.

Apple doesn't make much of the stuff inside and outside the MacBooks and 'Book Pros or any Mac for that matter... just like many PC vendors make only the cases and barely even that sometimes.

duh, but thats why they have industry contracts so apple should handle the warranty problems.

For backups I use Chronosync for my drives other than my boot drive, and SuperDuper! for my boot drive. Do a full backup once, and then smart updates. Keep your backup drives off site, so if there's some sort of disaster (flood, fire, tornado, theft, etc) you won't lose any data (or at least nothing before the last time you backed up). If I didn't use Chronosync and superduper it'd take forever to do backups, as right now I have 2 500gb drives used for backups of my external and internal drives, and that isn't even enough to backup everything.

I do this about once every couple weeks.
