Long story short: HP's slate might very well be a no-show. It seems now that they've got Palm they've perhaps begun to rethink their strategy. Good thing too, because that slate was shaping up to be a pile of fail. Of course, in the meantime, Apple will keep moving forward with the iPad and taking more of the market in the process. Apple's running away with it at the moment and has all the mindshare on their side, as usual. Hopefully people will still care when HP rolls out anything in this area.

They'd be stupid to ship that POS.

They just spent 1.2 billion dollars on Palm. The only way they break free from being Microsoft's b***c is to scrap the Windows based junk and get in the game.

I'll bet that HP, Dell, etc. ... all the big PC oems have their "Plan B" Operating System planners on overtime. Not just for "Slates", "Tablets", ePads or smartphones either.

Why? Apple's recent successes. Microsoft is damaged goods, has been for ages. Up until recently, that's just the way it was. Now good 'ol Apple finally hits the big time with their UNIX-based NON-MS OSes, proving it's possible.

Someone is probably going to try to emulate Apple and keep their OSes in-house as IBM tried way back a long time ago.

If just one of the majors tries and succeeds, that's the likely beginning of the end of MS and the rule of King William's Henchmen.

Have Fun,
Keri

PS. But what would they call it? HP Slate with HPOS 1.0? SlateOS? SLOS? HPINUX? HPINDOWS?

I thought the ipad was a failure? Who wants a fail phone os on a tablet anyways? People want USB ports and full OS features not little mini fart apps and such.

HP slate looks pretty good but there are lots of other good tablet pcs and there have been for years.

Can you point me to the data that shows the iPad was/is a failure?

Who are these people? Forum geeks? Get over it, you're a small, small piece of the market and companies don't make products targeted at you. At least profitable companies don't.

The media, consumers, the industry, content providers, are sure hung up on the failed iPad. In fact, they can't stop obsessing over it and falling all over each other to develop for it.

You'd better hurry up and get a 3G model before supplies are strained again.

But more importantly, I recommend you don't Google for "iPad" or "iPad" + "news" or anything related to that. Your head will explode all over your Fujitsu LifeBook.

Hopefully people will still care when HP rolls out anything in this area.

I will, because I don't want a stripped down OS on something with a 9-10" screen. I don't want to rely solely on Apple's App Store for my products, because honestly, I don't find the apps I'm looking for to be of any significant quality.

They will still ship the PC Slate, they are kind of committed at this point.

What this will kill is the rumored Android Tablet.

This lets them stand out from the sea of Chinese Android knockoffs and lets them control their own destiny and differentiating features.

Well if you don't want to rely on the security and safety of the app store. Then don't buy apple products. Go to android or some place that allows any types of apps in and when your device becomes consumed with Malware since there is "No one minding the store". Remember you won't be able to complain about that.

What people want usb ports? Oh you mean the mac rumors people because this forum really speaks for what everyone wants? Right? WRONG! The Average consumer doesn't get a rise from specs and hdmi and usb ports.

I myself am a power user. I do alot of photoediting and graphic design and i don't care that the ipad doesn't have usb port,ETC. You see i wanted a TABLET not another Macbook or PC when i got the ipad.

And the other tablet PC's have been failure's that have found moderate success in Niche markets such as small segments of the medical field.

You don't speak for me or anyone else on the forum. So next time you say "People want this or that" You are really refering to what you and the small segment of Spec users wants. Not the majority

FUD isn't cutting it. What security and safety exists in the app store itself?

I've used Linux and Windows for years and never had any issues that you describe. Then again, I am security-minded no matter what platform I use.

Now you understand why I don't want an iPad. I don't want/need the same things as you (such as a 3rd party ensuring I don't screw up my machine). I want a full OS because it's my choice.

I'm refering to the lack of security and safety in the Android App store. Anyone can write an app and Submit it. So if someone wanted to create something with malicious code or a Keylogger. So if your going to Bofa.mobi which is bank of america's mobile site or ETC. It can create an issue.

Say what you will about the Apple App store but the only platform i heard of having issues with this was Android Not Apple.

What part of a full OS don't you understand? Android and the iPhone OS are stripped down and require an app store. A full OS doesn't need an app store.

On "tablets", it also performs like crap and looks strangely similar to it.

Tablets have failed for obvious reasons. Apple's is succeeding beyond expectations, also for obvious reasons.

You're making statements of opinion, not fact. I've used many tablets in real life that perform well. We had about 20 of them from various manufacturers for a project that ran without issue on XP SP2.

Would Apple's iPad run a full OS very well? I doubt it given the specs.

Well BTW i was responding to your response about the app store question. So i suggest to go back and read what you wrote. And what PART of success do you not understand? For a tablet to be anything more than a Niche market sucess. It's going to need an App store. And full os? Why would someone buy a tablet with Windows 7? Most people would think that would be a laptop.

Only geeks and devs would probarly buy it. And sadly that wouldn't be enough consumers to make it anything more than a niche device

what do you use for your messure.

The tablets out before hand were designed not for the general consumer market in mind. The markets the previous tablets were made for will still be strong in those areas because the iPad sucks for those markets in its very striped down limited os.

Have something that can fully flip between tablet mode and computer comes in handy. iPad is stuck to a very limited fancy iPod.

For my measure, I use what everyone's wanted to do for years, but failed miserably, and what Apple's been able to do almost overnight.

http://gizmodo.com/5324866/vintage-...e-the-most-popular-form-of-pc-sold-in-america

You may remember, Bill Gates was a loyal tablet user for years (and he still uses one). He was such a fan, in fact, that back in 2001 Gates told CNN, "The tablet takes cutting-edge PC technology and makes it available whenever you want it...It's a PC that is virtually without limits — and within five years I predict it will be the most popular form of PC sold in America."

Oh yes, I forgot. There's only a million or so of the less-desirable non-3G models out in less than a month.

With pathetic sales figures like these how could Apple even hope to stay in business? They might as well have a liquidation sale and go home.

Obviously the pathetically low sales total of 1,100,000 in 29 days was caused by the lack of USB, HDMI, DVI, VGA, CGA, ADC, Ethernet, PS-2, Parallel and Serial Ports.
Doesn't Apple know that everyone NEEDS to connect to everything in the house, basement and attic? And have a full-fledged Operating System? After all, you never know when you'll have to run your Microsoft Office 1993.... it could be an emergency!

I guess I'm just one of those SUCKERS that Apple duped into intending to get one of the 3G models in a week or two.

It's a good thing you pointed out the iPads shortcomings! I might have actually bought one soon. I forgot about all the terrific "features" of our "Tablet PCs" at work.

Have Fun,
Keri :p

PS. It doesn't have Ports, it doesn't even have Starboards!

two very different markets. I would not call an iPad a tablet PC. It is is closer to a iPod touch than a Tablet computer.

The Macbook Air could be a great computer to turn into a tablet Computer. Just have the monitor being able to turn around. Then you have a light way notebook that would work really well for that design.

The tablet so to speak was design to replace traditional laptops still function as a persons primary computer.
The iPad is not something that can work as some one primary computer. It requires computer to tie back into.

The iPad is a niche device. Apple has said it sits between an iPod and its laptops. Additionally, it's not a laptop replacement either, so that pretty much puts it in a niche category. I have no idea why you are bringing success into the conversation.

One flaw with the iPad is it requires an existing computer, so a user has to keep a computer around to back up any data on it. A bit of added cost that people tend to gloss over and one that wouldn't happen with a full OS.

I want a full OS, because I don't want to be tied down to an app store for applications I want/need. I want something with a 9-10" screen to be a laptop replacement. Again, according to Apple, the iPad is not a replacement and therefore won't run a full OS. Also full OS does not automatically mean Windows 7.

What? Why did i bring success into the conversation? Because that's what a device needs to stay afloat. If a device is a failure then it wouldn't be successful. The ipad is a success and the numbers speak for themselves.

You should really do some research
