Forced upgrades. Its not iOS8, but iOS18. Users need to comply with the new terms and conditions, but they are not able to with iOS17.1.1. Apple says it needs to upgrade to iOS18, before the button works.
well that false information was easily debunked.

iCloud backups were first supported in iOS 5 (not supported by the OG iPhone or iPhone 3G), and iPhone 4S supports up to iOS 9, so really it's only two iPhone models (iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4) and the original iPad that completely lose the ability to do iCloud backups.

I think that's fair! Pretty amazing it has worked for all those devices until now.

iCloud photos and videos can be downloaded manually but what about iCloud backup?

I never created an iCloud backup even when I used iPhone 4, 4s, 5, 5c, 5s but local backup gets automatically created when running iTunes [even though I set it not to do so]

It's been 9 years since iOS 8 stopped getting updates yet iOS 8 devices are still allowed to backup to iCloud which Apple changed to iOS 9 and later from 18th December 2024 onwards...

Tell me you didn’t read the article and are going off on an unrelated tangent without telling me you didn’t read the article and are going off on an unrelated tangent.

I'm not impacted as I don't have any old devices like this still around, but I can't help but feel like this sort of stuff needs much better communication. Apple should give users at least a year's heads up especially since they're deleting backups for these users.
I mean probably less than a million ppl are actively using m iOS 8 or earlier. Especially since these phones likely don’t have 4g/5g so they can’t be used as phones or mobile tablets.

Hell, I am being generous. Most apps don’t work with iOS 8 or earlier lol. So it’s probably even less.

Sure, there might only be 1 user still using this and who was still paying for that support since iCloud backups aren't free unless you can stay inside the extremely small 5GB tier. I would just expect that Apple would still give them users a decent heads up as courtesy. Especially since they aren't just nuking the support, but also the backups themselves. I think it would also be nice to give users a way to download the backup so they could restore it via iTunes or whatever locally in the future and they could be responsible for its storage going forward.

Stuff like this is why I don't trust anyone's cloud for my long term storage or backups.
