Unacceptable, the product shouldn't have been defective from the start. I don't care if they're offering to fix it. That's a fantastic gesture on their part, but it only proves that they were producing a defective product, which is plain and out right unacceptable.

If Dell made such a design flaw they probably wouldn't even fix it...

On the other hand gotta give them credit for their superior extended warranty scheme though, even covers theft in the first year! Never mind the fact about who on earth will want to steal a Dell....

How loud is this "whine"? I can hear it sometimes (when it's idle and displaying the desktop, with no applications open), but how loud is it "supposed to be"?

The only reason I'm asking is because it has caused problems for me before. In school it annoys some people, and I am only allowed to use the mac instead of a paper notebook if it's not distracting or annoying anyone.

No, it shouldn't have been defective from the start, but it was. Given that, what would you have them do except fix it and try to do better next time?

Like the iBooks? Like the first alu powerbooks?

I wish they would do better then next time, but apperently they don't.

The disgraceful thing is even under warranty, you have to pay Apple (as in give them your CC# details) to listen to your problem, after they issued their threats of how you will be charged if it is not a hardware problem, only then will they address your issues and send you an authorisation to send your machine down to a service centre.
I called Apple about 3 months ago to get a lower memory slot fixed and didn't have to pay or give a CC#. The machine was out of warranty at the time, and I was the 2nd owner. And they promptly fixed it with no questions asked (well, almost).

Hmm, I got that treatment when my Mini smoked 4 months day the road and I had to get it serviced. Genuinely got me pissed off just thinking about the curt "you will be charged $80 if our technician found nothing wrong with it". Great service indeed.

I do think that Apple could learn a lot from Dell's customer service. They just fix it or take it back, and provide in-home service for free with most systems. And they have a no-questions-asked return policy with no restocking fee. I know that Dell gets beat up a lot, but I have always had excellent results from the customer service.

once again, I agree. but what's done is done. they can't undo past defects; all they can do is repair them and keep trying to get it right. No, they're hardly perfect, but this is still a good move by them in this case.

I can't think of a single problem the first generation of iBooks had. Nor the second. Somebody enlighten me. I used to own one it was tank-like.
