Apple Forces Neofonie To Change WePad Name

I came across an article that said the WePad had its name changed to the WeTab. I guess that infers the We Tablet. The author made his opinion clear that the name change wasn't voluntary and that Apple forced the name change on the company.

First the iPhone 4G storm trooper incident and now this. Apple has become the IBM of the 80's.
 
It's a bit of a different situation to the 'stormtrooper' 4G action but it's a bit rich of Apple to force someone to change their product name when another company had the iPad name before them.

You know this topic come up too much. They all have the same modus operandi.

OP states that x company forces y company to change their name. OP then finishes with derogatory statement about x company for their actions and usually compares x company to Hitler or a Communist or whatever divisive figure they can think of.

But the one thing these topics fail to consider is that a trademark name must be defended within reason. If you trademark "Pad" within the context of computing then you better be defending that trademark against potential infringers or you will lose the right to the trademark.

Sometimes the issue isn't one of x company being a d*ck but rather just following the process.

The journalist made it up. WePad changed to WeTab of their own volition. They even tell you why they did it - for the same reason we all think iPad is a stupid name. WePad is something your dog uses.

The Storm Trooper incident you refer to: is that the warrant served by the civil law enforcement authorities to search someone's house because he videoed himself on the Internet bragging that he was in receipt of stolen property?

Apple has a trademark on the word "iPad" not "Pad"

At the time of the incident Apple has custody of the iPhone 4G. Also Apple security went to the kids house who originally found the iPhone for the purpose of a search which was denied.

Where does a consumer electronics company have the right to even attempt a search of a private citizens home?

I smell Big Brother.

I recommend you quickly sell anything you own made by Apple and vow never to purchase any Apple products ever again. That'll show 'em.

There's no evidence this actually happened.

Also - there's no law preventing any private citizen asking to search anywhere. The search was denied, probably due to the occupants knowing they were in receipt of stolen property. The important thing for a company worth billions of dollars is to establish if there is a leak or if this was due to one drunken accident.

How is that acting like Stormtroopers? I call Godwin.

As long as they ask and then comply with the answer they get (i.e. don't forcibly enter and search someone's home), then this is certainly within the rights of anyone in the United States.

There is another word for this, it is called harassment. Let them go to a court and get a judge to issue a warrant for local law enforcement to do this.

They didn't need to. Dealing in stolen property is a criminal offence and therefore the police did it all themselves.

And harassment is very well defined in law. It's not "knocking on someone's door and asking questions one time".

He just has an axe to grind thus don't expect any reasonable and cogent arguments from him. According to him Steve Jobs himself kicked down Chen's door and took his computers.

They went to the kids house for what purpose? To search it, for what? Did they really think that he reverse engineered the iPhone 4G and sold the plans to HP?

They went there for one purpose, to intimidate him and his family.

What happened to "Think Different" to "We are the rebels and the trouble makers". How about, the ones who push the human race forward?

It doesn't really matter anymore anyways as Jobs has over stepped his bounds with the changing of the developers agreement. Obama has instructed Eric Holder to pursue an Anti-Trust investigation into Apple, who's end result will be to shatter them into 1000 little pieces.
 
The WeWhatever ain't where it's at. My vote is on HTC and Google teaming up to create a GooglePad. Then things get interesting... ;)

I think that the only real contender for the iPad will be HP with Palm's Web OS. But that probably won't show up until next year.

It could be a repeat of Apple and Microsoft where Apple wants to keep the iPhone OS to itself and HP will be smart enough to market the Web OS and take over the entire industry.

History will repeat itself again.

Well right now the Droid and the Incredible are superior than the iPhone 3GS (the new iPhone will likely leapfrog them). Android and Google have the best shot at keeping the heat on Apple. HP and Palm ain't got what it takes.

One thing is for sure - competition is good!!!

What are you basing your disregard of the Palm Web OS on?

On my understanding of the capabilities and track record of Apple, Google, and Palm.

Don't get me wrong, I was a Palm nut (best Outlook sync in the industry!). But they are not in the same league as Google and Apple. Heck, not even Microsoft is playing at that level.

It's Apple vs Google for this space, and I don't expect a clear winner. One will strike, then the other.

And we all win with shiny new gadgets every year. :D
