To Apple Consumers:
Apple released many new and innovative products today, including a piece of software called "Front Row." Unfortunately this software is only available on the newly released iMacs. As a loyal Apple consumer I feel that Apple should release this software/feature as a standalone product.

Apple listens to their customers, so I urge those who feel the same way to cast their vote. Please follow the link below to read and sign the petition.

Not to be a downer, but have any petitions ever created on PetitionOnline ever done anything?

Another more direct (and potentially more effective) method of expressing your concerns would be using Apple feedback

Right.

The thing just came out today. No need to start a petition to get a newly released product available in everything. Look at the iPod nano with its stopwatch and screenlock and the world clock. The next iPod that came out had those things. That is an advance in technology. Apple didn't need to be petitioned to get that done.

I understand that my analogy is comparing software and hardware, but this has not even be out 24 hours and you are already complaining that apple didn't update all macs!

applerocks :)

I have the Rev. B iMac G5, so now it's outdated. :( But anyways, sure I would love the new stuff anounced today, but in Apple's defense, the new iMac releases today are like thier "media edition," so it only makes sense that some of the features are only available on it.
But of course I wouldn't complain if they made it for all computers :p

So Front Row as a stand alone eh?

You do realise the remote is IR, not bluetooth.

I doubt Apple will let Keyspan or anybody else have a remote that works with it.

Not a chance I'd say, but I reckon all new Macs will have it, along with a built in iSight in the laptops.

As my signiture says below, I'm also have the Rev. B iMac G5, and I was excited about the very cool updates, but very upset that my one month old system was oudated:( I just tried to think of it this way, your computer still kicks ass, it doesn't have all the bells and whistles, just most of them, and MOST importantly, you could use a tv for most of the features that the new iMac has. Just wanted you to know that I was kind of depressed about my newly bought outdated mac too. We're in the same boat.

Who cares? It does not support TV software (Vidi, Formac), good audio streaming software (Audion), video streaming software (iTube!), radio software (RadioShark) and you can't control iTunes from another room.

Errrm. How can they release Front Row as a standalone product without updating the whole product line? Its uses an IR remote. Only the new iMac and the iPod Dock connector have an IR receiver. So how to do expect to control the thing. Eh eh eh???

No, but I suspect a successful outing of this software will justify and legitimize a set-top Apple box, just like a successful outing of the ROKR will send Ives and Co to the drawing board for a proper iPhone.

Apple Remote

Control your iPod from afar. Play, pause, control volume and skip forward and back between songs from across the room with the Apple Remote.
Price: $29.00

Estimated Ship:
2-3 weeks

The Apple Remote requires the iPod Universal Dock and any iPod with a Dock connector.

Apple Remote with Mac
Included with the new iMac G5, the Apple Remote gives you total command of your music, photos, videos and DVDs from anywhere in the room. It combines with Front Row -- a menu-driven, full-screen interface -- to make accessing your iMac's digital bounty from any seat in the room as simple as navigating your iPod. When you click the Apple Remote's Menu button, your desktop fades and Front Row's sleek interface takes its place to give you control over your music in iTunes, your photos in iPhoto, the videos in your Movies folder and whatever DVDs you want to play. Turn up the volume. Shuffle. Skip to the next chapter on your DVD. Play a slideshow, a home movie you made in iMovie, even a movie trailer. Just sit back and enjoy the show.

Should answer some questions.

I see no need to even particiapte in this petition I think there is enough evidence to show that the software will become available, Possibly bundled with iLife06 ?

I already have a set-top Apple box. It's called a Cube.
If anything, Apple producing this half-baked solution just discourages third parties from investing in the production of something really good.

...and the most important reason, no one pays a blind bit of notice to online petitions!

All digital cameras are IR sensitive - I suspect the iSight camera is used as the IR dectector.

So Front Row and the remote should work on any apple with an iSight attached.

cheers

there is no mention about Infra red on imac tech details, but on remote control details says compatible with apple products that has IR built in

I hope apple release some information on this :(

okay, how about this: do you think that if they made front row available for other macs, that i could control it with my bluetooth mouse? i already use my bluetooth mouse like a remote, and i would like to use it with front row.

also, i'm one of those who bought a new imac only a month ago. but this update doesn't bother me too much - upgrades are bound to happen, isight i would never use & infrared is soooo outdated - bluetooth is where its at - IR is a step backwards!

however the GPU and slight screen improvements i would have liked.

also, does anyone else think the new ipods are dog ugly? they're so fat!

Possibly- who knows? It would sure be nice of Apple. Give them a while to see how people use it. They just released it yesterday!

Not for TV remotes. Bluetooth drains batteries, is expensive, takes a couple of seconds to connect. Not things you want for a TV remote - you want to be able to pick it up after 4 months of heavy use, 3 months of non use, press a button and have it instantly change channel / tune.

Online petitions are crap.

Whoa, my first post in a month or so. And it's a thing of beauty, isn't it? Just look at it!

andy.

I wonder if you can use the new iPod Dock as a IR receiver for any Mac to use it with Front Row. I got an iPod and need a dock, if that was true then it would be cool.

The original iMac had an IR receiver (never finding much use)...I find this an interesting nostalgic point to the new iMac...I'd like to see Front Row released just so I can use it with the ol' Bondi. :D
