This happened to me. I bought a new Intel iMac and as soon as I had completed my first software update on it, the thing died. Back screen, flashing power LED, and nothing else.
Took it back, they gave me a new one immediately, and let me stay in the store to do the update on the new one and to check it out. They even kept the help desk open past closing just for me.
Every company will ship a few duds. The difference between companies is what they do about it.
