My 64gb has been a PIA connecting to my Verizon Actiontec router for the past 3 days. I am considering either exchanging it or simply returning it & opting for 3G model in hope that it's wi-fi may work & if it does not at least I have 3G as a backup.

By the way, I lost my network connection while typing this. Love the Ipad but hate the fact that I finally had to learn my Verizon router PW by route.:(

I really don't see how it could be a design flaw like some people seem to think. Most people are having no problems. Do you really think something that simple would get past R&D? You'd be crazy/ignorant to think that. I think apple would have an idea of signal strength from their device.

Actually I do think Apple could have missed it, because it's happened before. The early TiBooks had wireless problems due to a surplus of shielding around the antenna.

Mine works great at home but at external hotspots it's not so hot! Weak to no signal at times in some places.

My bet is that they dumbed the wifi signal pull down to extend the battery life and they will be able to fix it via software update.

Guys, relax, I'm 99.9% sure it's a software issue.

We ran into a similar issue with a project involving iPod Touch units running iPhone OS 2.1... We were trying to connect them to a (I believe it was a Linksys) router and the only way they would talk was if we used no encryption or WEP... Corporate security threw a fit over that and insisted we use WPK2. The iPod Touch units refused to connect using that, but my iPhone would connect just fine.

Some investigation showed that Apple had implemented some patches to fix some vulnerabilities that had recently been discovered in the protocol in the iPod's implementation, but Linksys hadn't. We ended up having to switch to an Airport Extreme. When we did that iPod Touch units worked great with WPK2.

Basically the software fixes Apple put into the touch units made them not able to talk with the Linksys because Linksys hadn't made the same changes.

I bet if you looked around, the vast majority of the people having issues are using the same set of routers and/or older firmware that's causing an incompatibility issue.

I know I was surprised when I saw the aluminum backing. Aluminum and wireless do not play well. I adjusted my beacon interval on my wireless router from 800 to 100. That seemed to help. Well see when their update comes out.

Also shut off the dual band.. like if it is a b/g router.. set it to g only. Should clean up the signal a bit.

I've been reading all this stuff and am experiencing the same issue.
But I found it's a false indication by the wifi icon. I ran SpeedTest.net on it while showing 1 bar and when showing 3. Same result 10 to 15 MB sec. :)

I was getting ready to post the same thing. On my N network I go from 3 bars to instantly 1 bar in the space of 10 feet...but...no falloff in performance.

At Panera on Sunday on whater G system they use it was consistently 1 bar everywhere...but worked fine.

Renaming the 5ghz band to a different name certainly did the trick for me. I had horrible connectivity In the school library where I have an airport extreme placed. It is the only dual band we have. I renamed the 5ghz band today and now it is working great.

The WiFi issue is starting to bug me now.

I have always had different names for my 2.4 and 5GHz networks.

I have reset all networking.

Alas, everytime I wake the iPad up, it does not reconnect.

It could be because my network is hidden, but nothing else has ever had an issue with this. I will try it out and see what happens. Hope a software fix rolls out soon.

With that said, when it is connected the performance is reasonable.

Have to say I'm getting more irritated with this. It actually seems to be getting worse.

The issue occured once or twice on day 1 but got progressively worse to every 10 or so minutes by last night.

Then it dropped the router connection completely. Nothing I did would get my ipad to talk to my router at all. Eventually I gave up trying to reconnect and resorted to using my iphone as a mifi, but today even thats getting worse. I seem to get about 2 minutes before it disconnects and I have to go back into settings...

grr...

I know it's software and it will be fine but....

Apple has stated that if you have a router that has 2.4GHZ and 5.0GHZ bands that share an SSID that you should break them up into 2 separate networks with different SSIDs. This is unreal! I hope for their sake that the issue isn't related to a bad lot of components.

I have an Apple Airport Extreme Base Station set up as two Networks (2.4ghz and 5ghz) and I don't have any issues browsing on the internet on either networks. I live in a 2 story home and I keep the router in the upstairs master bedroom (located at the back of the house) and I can easily walk around my house and front yard without ever losing signal strenth.

but on Easter sunday we had a family gathering at my uncles house and everybody wanted to see my iPad, so I let everyone pass it around and we tried several times to log on to his linksys router and failed several times and we were only 10 ft away from the router. (my uncle has a 2.4ghz linksys G Router)

I have the exact same routers and I have had better luck with the linksys. Who knows?

Well, my network consists of two airport extremes and a time capsule, and I'm seeing issues - so the problem isn't limited to 3rd party gear.

It's not that I can't get a signal; it's that the signal degrades for some reason - three bars become one and any net connection comes to a halt. Turn the pad's wireless off and back on, and it's three bars again.

So I'd say it's definitely a software issue.

Just got back from the :apple: store. :apple: genius informed me that :apple: is replacing all wifi models having wifi issues with the new g model when it's released. The customer will have to pay for the data plan though.

Okay, just kidding. I do feel, badly, for those having these problems on their brand new iPads :(

It is 7 days past April Fools, my friend.:p

I have your same setup. Disable security (wep), will connect now.

I would never disable security in the WWW we live in today. I have a Linksys router at work and have similar issues. If I cannot find a fix tonight, it is getting packed up for exchange/return.

For the love people, just use WPA security, it is so easy. You shouldn't have any problems.

Try updating your router's firmware

I have 2 iPads and only one was experiencing wifi problems (either horrible connection or no connection at all). My router, a D-link 615, is not dual-band but the firmware was pretty old. Updated the firmware and voila, the iPad has now held a steady connection for 5 hours now. Obviously this is not going to fix everyone's problem but it's a start...and something you can try right now.
