Sigh

Hard drives are mechanical.
They make noise.
They have motors and mechanical arms inside them.
If you wanted a silent machine you should have ordered SSD.
Even then, the machine still makes some noise from the fans.

Why is everyone failing to see the bigger picture here?

Hard drives make noise yes, but this is a machine where it's been consistently noted that those with one type of drive (WD) make far less noise than those with another type of drive (Seagate). In my quest to own an iMac with a consistently coloured display, of the 5 iMacs that have been in my posession I've seen, or rather heard, both.

Why is it unreasonable to expect one machine to behave like the other when both cost exactly the same amount. Luck remains the determining factor for which of the two you end up with?

Further - if there really is a firmware fix from seagate then why is it not reasonable to think that apple could work with them to include an equivalent firmware patch in a future update?

The title of this thread is "Apple going to do something with the hard drive noise?". It seems a fair question given these points.

Harddrives are noisy..... unless of course, they're not.

ps aliensporebomb - Do you frequent the rbr forums? I recognize the handle.

I bought an iMac today. Everything looks good but the HDD noise is really annoying

My MacBook was dead silent and I didn't expect this at all

Same here. I have a 3 week old Mac which cost £1499 - I've never heard some much grumbling from a hard drive, every time I load a web page or a programme. My previous 24" never made a sound. Also - I now have a grey smudge of what looks like fingerprints accumulating on the top right of the screen under the glass. I'm outside of the 14 day return period but I think that this is unacceptable for a machine that cost that much money.

there is a solution to it as i doubt very much apple will replace a harddrive only because its a bit louder then others
so only solution to it then is :
shake the imac a bit while running a app thats using the harddrive until you hear no sound of the HDD any more (backup first) then you get it replaced with a more quiet one(with luck), this trick works as the result is a headcrash and a dead harddrive(they only withstand about 70 g max while running , dropping the iMac would dot the trick too but could cause some outside damage

but i recommend getting a WD VelociRaptor WD3000GLFShttp://www.silentpcreview.com/article844-page1.html fitted
more silent then the SG and really cool running harddrive solution and its running at 10000rpm so is faster too, about 50% faster
ok it has ONLY 300gb , but people spend much more money on a ssd with less capacity

well i have just got a 2tb western digital ready to go in, im just waiting for the termo sensor to turn up and hopefully i shall have a slightly less noisy mac
