Yeah I got a 27" a few weeks ago and my screen is fine, or at least fine enough that I don't notice.

I have the same issue with my 2 week old iMac i7. A kind of yellowish tint at the bottom of the screen. Looked today at some macs in the apple reseller store, they have the same "issues". The bottom is warmer, especially if you open a light grey image.

Should I let apple fix it? Or is this color difference "normal" for 27 inch iMacs? For 2k it can not be "normal"...

For the one billionth time, there is no fix. (not directed at you,; just in general)

ALL of them have varying degrees of yellow, unfortunately.

This is inherent in the design. You either live with a little yellow or go elsewhere.

Please look at the iMac patent for the LED backlit screen. Apple states that these color inconsistences are normal.

To the OP:

ALL of the iMacs have yellow tint to some degree. It's inherent in the design. Please take a look at the iMac patent for the LED backlit system and you'll see that Apple even states the lack or diminished color uniformity found within this new technology. That a dispersement of color will be evident. The process Apple has engineered to implement it has created these yellow-like blotches.

Apple is placating their customers with replacements, however, some of the replacements have actually been former returns, evidenced by the scuffing and other indentifying clues.

If you've been following the board, no one has really recevied a perfect iMac, devoid of any color inconsistences. They ALL SETTLE. Please understandthat before yopu put yourself throguh a long frustrating cycle of return/replace/repair - all to no avail. Often, they have MORE problems. not less.

You need to either accept this fact or look elsewhere. The yellow tint problem is not going away. In fact, I now belive that the Rev. B (soon to be out in the Fall) will also contain this same flaw. It is just the technology, for now.

Best of luck in deciding what to do.

Agreed. Selling returns is illegal! Right? It will take a legal battle to cure these QT probs.

FYI, I got 3 imacs (2 i5 and 1 i7) all from MacConnection and they were all with yellow tint.

Hm, I thought you were on the boards more. :p

Reading between the lines on that link.

It does sound like what they are saying is:

As we try and cram a computer into the same case as a screen (unlike almost anyone else) then the monitor will get extra hot in places, and due to this we will get colour variations on a LED backlit display.

If the display was separate from the computer then this would not happen.

Am I reading this wrong?

Some people claim "perfect" screens. The root cause of the yellow tint (and to some degree other colors) was not made public, but it has likely something to do with the used light dispersing method.

On the bright side there is a number of large screen LED TVs on the market completely free of the problem, so lets hope that Apple buys one and learn, how this is done.

Don't Apple make separate monitors that use the exact same screens as fitted in the iMacs?

I know everyone else will disagree, but I do wish Apple would make an iMac but have the computer in a small/smart aluminium/glass box separate to the monitor.

And no, I don't mean a mini mac or mac pro.

It is not the same panel (24"). I don't recall any tint complains on those, though...

What you think of is a "Mac Pro Light". It would be nice, but eventually it would be very similar to Mac Mini, I think they don't want to compete with themselves and eat their own Mac Pro and Mac Mini sales. Just MHO.

Yes.

In my mind, (not sure how others would agree of not)

A Mac Pro is the equivalent of a PC

An iMac is just a large screen Laptop with it's screen reversed and stuck on a stand.

I suppose I want apple to make a low cost Mac Pro (for normal people) but they won't :(

Well, just my opinion, keep it and enjoy. It doesn't look that bad.
Unless you do something requiring extra special quality you probably won't notice it.

Did you keep the last one or just a get a refund?

returned all. I got 2 replacements with the last one and both again are yellow (last one with yellow background color in Finder windows, funny) but luckily, i got full refund from apple store!!

Worries me.

Are all these returns sold off as refurbs, or once back at factories might they be turned around (with same screens) as new units?

They are obviously good enough to be passed by quality control as new units.

I have the same problem, disappointing... I actually sent mines in for repair, because of yellow tint and deadpixels. Got a replacement (brand new imac), on June 21th 2010, and guess what it also has yellow tint, even worse then before.. I have it on the bottom right side..

I've got the 21.5" iMac.. Why do iMacs suffer with this issue? I've bought a lot of monitors in the past when I was using a PC and I have to say I've never encountered a yellow tint issue...

It can only be down to two things if you think about it:

1: Heat (due to a computer squashed right up against the back of the screen and hotter in some areas than others)

2: Due to their being a computer squashed right up against the back of the screen the backlighting LED layout needed to be arranged in such a way as the make everything fit in.

There is no other reason why LED's if they were distributed evenly across the back of a LCD panel would be any different in one area of the screen than any other.

The fact that this yellow/discolouration seems to be always in the same areas of the screen tells us it's some design or heat issue that must be due to getting everything to fit in the one box.

Unless all the Apple stand alone LED backlit monitors also suffered from the same discolouration in the same areas.

Makes sense :p.. I really hope the issue is resolved somehow..

Still, some people claim (CLAIM!!) they have a "perfect" screen.
I suggested some time ago that yellow tinters should not be replaced, but returned for cash. The next step should be purchase of a new one (exercise only for the willing, i.e. eternal optimists). This could break the vicious circle of "my third replacement is worse than the first computer I got". Just could.
I really hope Apple will shape up and solve the problem. Unless they are currently focused on an iPhone G13, or something....

I agree! If people would get the refund it would send the message worth millions.

I am but this is one of those topics I've been ignoring as I do not have personal experience and I overall don't like this topic that much (mostly just rants and frustrated people so I have nothing useful to say)

Agreed. Selling returns is illegal! Right? It will take a legal battle to cure these QT probs.

It's pretty normal, Apple is not the only one doing it. It's pretty hard for us to get evidence that could actually hold against Apple in court of law plus what would we get? Maybe some money but that wouldn't stop Apple from doing it. Under the fancy appearance of Apple, there is this not-so-nice side. It's just one company among others, all trying to do as much profit as possible
