The breaking of the front cover glass is not covered under warranty.
$192 total USD. Breakdown is $101 for the parts, new glass cover, and $85 for Apple store std labor time, rest is tax. 7 days approx turnaround time.....I using now 2005 MacBook as backup....

The guy @ Apple store told me some people for the big 27" iMac will securely hold the alum stand to the desk, using a c-clamp/etc.
They did not have the wall mtg in store, I'm ordering online.

Hope others learn from our experience, securely mount your big 27" iMac somehow.

[edit] The Apple store did say they need to confirm the display itself was not damaged, if damaged that's $800 USD!
I told them "if display is damaged do not fix anything, I'll use the computer as is, and remove the broken glass cover pieces."

Here is hoping for a little good luck in this story the display is not damaged.

$85 to put the glass on? I can do it in 5 minutes for free lol

It is a matter of 10 seconds. But can you do so that there will be no dust left under it? It is only possible to do it in a special dust free room.

You cant just wipe off dust and then put glass in. Does not work that way. I ve done it many times and there is always dust particles left

I discussed this with the apple store rep, his comments also.
Plus, I'm not sure warranty coverage if I do myself the repair, did not look into that aspect.
I'm more than capable any DIY stuff, but in the end, I just want my iMac back ASAP in same condition prior to all this happening.

I have taken my 20" iMac Apart many times and not an issue. I make sure I am in a room with no fans on and well cooled so I don't sweat. I use a plunger to remove the glass now on the 27" I wouldn't dare myself probably do to the size of it. It actually comes out very easily and is scary sometimes because of how it just pops off.

Back in business!
The display screen was NOT broken, "saving" me $800.
Final cost was $192 USD for the glass cover as detailed prior.
I also put this wall mtg arm on yesterday

and then the wood panels on the wall fail and bang!

just kiddin :p

looks pretty good :)

Actually our home is log home, and behind these pine T&G is a huge 4 x 12 load bearing beam, which I drilled/screwed the arm too.

Hopefully that will handle the load...

Wow, if my iMac 27" had this glass as screen cover I wonder if it would have cracked at all??

CORNING, N.Y. (AP) -- An ultra-strong glass that has been looking for a purpose since its invention in 1962 is poised to become a multibillion-dollar bonanza for Corning Inc.
The 159-year-old glass pioneer is ramping up production of what it calls Gorilla glass, expecting it to be the hot new face of touch-screen tablets and high-end TVs.

Just remove the rest of the glass (it's held on magnetically) and use it without the glass. No more breaky breaky.

I bit the bullet and had new glass installed....and with the wall mtg arm + kids "zero tolerance" discussion this solved.

I am glad no one was injured. I think we all lose sight that material possessions can be replaced. We saw a child not too long ago with bilateral hand injuries that had complete extensor and flexor tendon lacerations (and nerve) due to broken glass. You are blessed!

I stopped by the Apple store in Novi, Mich during my lunch break.
They gave estimate of "between $150 - 200 to fix if ONLY the glass broke".

I'll probably take it in next week.

not a bad price to replace the glass. I figured it would be even more.

can you just remove the remaining glass and use the screen as is? just curious what this would look like and if it is achievable?

You really should not let 4 y old play near imac, laptop or TV.

They can not only injure themselves, but end up being handicapped or even killed.
Letting kids do what they want is the worst form of education. It is dangerous, uninformative (because the kid does not know what he does) and irresponsible from your side.

If you want your kids to grow up successful, you need to start yelling at them, if you have not yet.

There are many surprises in life, not only glass in iMac.
Laptops explode, you know. Or you find out you have been eating food for years that causes cancer. Lots of things.

Relax buddy

I never though about it before I saw this thread, but the iMac's glass really does act as a "screen protector," in a way. If it were a regular display without glass, I'm pretty sure the LCD panel itself would've been damaged.
