Apple updated its Invites app to add a co-hosting feature that lets two or more people plan and manage a party or event.

There are also new event background options available, and hosts have the option to make invited guests visible to all attendees. Apple's notes for the update are below:
  • Cohosting is now available, letting you easily plan and manage your party with others.
  • New event backgrounds help set the mood for your next coffee catch-up, boba run, ice cream social, and more.
  • Hosts can now choose to make invited guests visible to all attendees.
  • This update contains bug fixes and performance improvements.
Apple introduced the Invites app in early 2024, and has continued to introduce updates since then. Invites is available on the iPhone and via iCloud, so invitations can be sent to anyone. Guests are able to RSVP from the iPhone app or from the web.

Cool. Meanwhile, in the real world every invite I’ve gotten in the past year has been through Partiful (younger people / fun stuff) or maybe Paperless Post or Evite (parents, kids birthday parties, etc).

This is definitely one of those “network effect” things where you end up using what other people use. See also: Venmo or Zelle vs. Apple Cash.

I have questions.

How many people can simultaneously co-host a single event?

Can the original host kick out a co-host for inappropriate behavior — or any other reason, for that matter?

Can a host on iOS appoint a co-host who uses Android?

Update:

Just got the answer to the first question. Just by launching the app.

I use this app. I’m actually glad Apple put a small solution out there for this. (I was in the process of starting to roll my own.)

Given Apple’s privacy stance, I trust (and actually prefer) them for this sort of thing versus one of the many other evite platforms. I simply don’t trust those platforms with my data… either as the sender or the receiver. (Nothing pisses me off more than getting a text invite to something and when I RSVP, I find that someone has uploaded my contact details to some random platform I’ve never heard of.)

It’s a very simple app, but it fits a specific need and integrates into Apple’s ecosystem pretty well. It’s certainly not a keynote-worthy app, but then again, Apple doesn’t market it as such either. haha It doesn’t need a lot of extra investment to keep it going. It just needs to work well, and I think it does that.

The only thing that prevents me from using it more often is having more parties. haha

I'm surprised at how many updates this app gets. Seems like lots of other apps, that seem to be way more useful, wither on the vine & are eventually removed. But somehow, this one keeps getting upgrades.
Must be someone’s pet project, meaning they made it for themselves or someone they care about.

I tried it a few times with my family thread (22 people - ages 19 to 78) over the holidays, less than half of the group bothered to sign up, use the shared folders, or add events to their calendars.

I tried it with friends gatherings as well, but more of the same. Everyone has moved on to Partiful it seems.

How does it work for people who have androids on the receiving end of the invite?

Fully do not understand why this app exists.

Almost every Siri demo scenario ends with a social gathering being planned. This app will end up being an agentic end point.

If you dig even deeper, Apple has stayed out of online social media and instead fosters real world social interactions and has built that into its features: i.e Photos app figures out that people were at an event together and offers to assemble a shared album from everyone's photos, Apple Music with collaborative playlists for IRL events, etc.

The Invites app doesn't make very much sense on its own, but it fills a role when you zoom out to view Apple's social approach that it's weaved into its DNA.
