I'm kinda shocked Apple would go a 4th year in a row with the ugly notch. Apple is one of the largest companies on the planet, with extremely smart people running it, surely they could have found a way to reduce the notch size a bit. To sure everyone they can make changes and not just keep it to save money.

At first in 2017 the notch was ok, and acceptable, but it's almost 2021, and it looks really dated and annoying to still be there.

They totally can reduce the size of the notch but they won’t. At least not this year.

When they finally reduce the notch maybe next year or in 2022, they will milk that smaller notch for another 2 years before finally going no notch. And by that time everybody else will have moved to under display selfie cameras.

No 120 Hz on pro sadly !

Usually Pro models gave a decent upgrade over non-pro model for tech enthusiast thanks to OLED + thinner bezel.
But this year with no 120 Hz and same notch while non-pro get OLED for the first time. I find the non-pro models even enough for most tech enthusiasts. On the pro you pay a big premium for LiDAR + 3rd camera, which is to me a bit weak given the price tag.

My 2 cents

Apple typically adopts technologies 1-2 years after being on mainstream Android brands. So if you set your expectations accordingly, you won't be disappointed.

We first saw an acoustic display on the Huawei P30 Pro last year. That allows the manufacturer to eliminate the earpiece speaker, which means a smaller notch. So it won't be adopted by Apple until next year at the earliest. True under display cameras won't be available until next year on Android.

We only saw 120Hz displays adopted by mainstream brands this year, so there's no way it will be on iPhone this year.

Ok sorry, I thought that video was hopefully correct, guess not.

This year your probably better off getting a good deal on an 11 Pro, or just wait for the iPhone 13. Sounds like the iPhone 12 compared to the 11 won't be a massive improvement.

I do have a question, will any of the screen or display be different on 12 Pro, meaning slimmer bezels, thinner sides, with more screen and less bezel? Or will the front display of a 12 Pro look identical to an 11 Pro?

That notch has become incredibly distinct to iPhones only, especially when you see someone using an iPhone in public--you know it's an iPhone by looking at the front screen. Apple knows this, so they are taking their sweet time making a non-notched iPhone but without Android phones year to year of shuffling of their notch/punch out being placed left, right, up, down and freaking sideways.

Apple is flexing their brand and they do not care if you're whining about it. They centered their Apple logo and took out the text. BRAND POWER.

This. The Notch today is what the Homebutton was on previous iPhones.

Yeah I hear ya there. Wouldn't be surprised Apple is keeping the notch as is, for brand recognition, which is lame.

One thing I love about Android, is how the manufactures change up their phones each year, even Samsung, might do slight changes, but year to year a Galaxy Note is different in size, or display, or notch, or shape, etc... from the year model before it. I like that.

I had the Pixel 3 XL, which had a giant ugly notch, I frigging hated that notch the entire year I owned the phone. Everyone said it fades away over time, your brain will erase it from being there after you use the phone daily, and yes that's true to a point, but I still noticed it. And then when I got the Pixel 4 XL, with no notch, wow I was so happy to be rid of that ugly notch. I'll take a large forehead over a silly notch any day.

I will never get why people say that the notches are ugly. I enjoy the added screen real estate they provide.

All of these comments are spot on, in my inexpert opinion. Apple has never rushed to change their design. The iPhone 6 redesign lasted from 2014 to 2017. The iPhone X redesign is just now approaching that same window: 2017 to 2020. I absolutely would prefer a hole punch screen, but the notch really isn’t that bad. I hardly paid attention to it in 2017 and still don‘t in 2020 on my iPhone 11 Pro. Brand identification is everything. That notch screams Apple to most people nowadays. That being said, I will be holding on to this 11 Pro until the notch is gone/reduced and 120Hz is introduced. Heck, I’d be happy with 90Hz panel, but definitely not worth upgrading for a more squared chassis and bit better camera.

We are all different. Some like the notch as a feature and some don’t like that design aesthetic. For a brand that’s so focussed on design it’s definitely a differentiator from their competition at this stage.

I'm not a Samsung Galaxy fan, those phones just are not my cup of tea, but I will say, they do look super cool, design wise. The tiny little whole punch camera in the top center, and all screen full display, looks very futuristic and modern.

Whereas Apple I thought was all about design, and artistic style, but their iPhone's look dated one year later. The old school look with the HUGE bezels and thumb button lasted way too long, they kept that same design year after year after year, so ugly and looked very outdated. When the iPhone X came out it was like HOLY COW finally a fresh modern style, even with the notch, it as still very cool. But 4 generations of notched iPhone's is starting to get old already. To me the current iPhone 11 Pro has a dated look, it looks like something from the mid 2010's. Plus the Fischer Price kiddy OS, ugh they need to redesign that from the ground up. You still can't even place a simple app icon, and drag it and keep it at the bottom of the screen right above the dock LOL.

But whatever, "Different strokes, for different folks"

To how many millions of likely buyers is 120Hz important? It would have to be many millions to affect Apple’s decisions, and I’m guessing it isn’t.
How many iPhones with display notches has Apple sold? North of 500,000,000? They ship over 200 million phones per year, and the X design has been current since 2017. So where’s the evidence the phone-buying public hates the notch?
Where too is the evidence hole punch cameras are better-liked? Sure a lot have been sold, but that could mean the public is simply indifferent. And the clever but crackpot solutions like motorised pop-up cameras and weird flip-over cameras haven’t exactly been selling like hot cakes.
It could just be that Apple have come up with the best solution for now, and their brand strength, sales figures, and muscular profits suggest to me they know exactly what they’re doing.

Apple won’t shrink the notch, they’ll wait until it can disappear.
I don't know about that.

Knowing Apple this year's design will be same body for 2021. They could give next year's iPhone a smaller notch to entice owners of the 12 series to upgrade. That's if Apple doesn't keep the same damn notch until 2022 (Could you imagine 5 freaking years with that notch?).

If they were to release an iPhone with a real edge to edge display then many wouldn't have a reason to upgrade for a long time. So why not sell you a smaller notch first?

If all these rumors are correct, then it looks like the iPhone 12 is going to offer 5G and nothing else. I haven't read of a single new feature other than 5G that would entice anyone with a X or newer to upgrade. I have a 6s and am barely justifying a new phone this year. I'm going to get the cheapest 12 there is and hope 2021 brings something new so I can upgrade and keep it for 5 years like my 6s.

If you can hold off until next yr, then don't upgrade if its a disappointment. See how easy that was? Lol
