I do love my iPhone 5. I've hadiPhones since the 3G and think they are great.
BUT, the more I look at the Samsung Galaxy, especially the new S4, the more I think of how Apple are laging behind the competition.

When Apple released their new original iPhone, it was a revolution. They were a step, maybe 2 steps, ahead of the competition and it was the new 'must have' device.

Fast forward to today, and I feel that Samsung has really taken a leap ahead. A pretty big leap. Apple iPhones seem to drag along with minor updates. Predictable updates. I really think they need to skip the iPhone 5s and really do something revolutionary to stay in the game.

I'm actualy starting to considering jumping ship.
The only thing holding me back is I do love my iPad and my other Apple gear in the sig, and I dont know if the Samsung Galaxy will play along nice!

take a look at the new galaxy s iii s lol

once you get to a certain point there isnt much left to innovate.

This is true, but what I thinks he means is android (especially samsung) has gotten to that point, Apple hasn't and is just trailing behind at this point

I think posters are lagging behind in reading, or doing any search on the forums for posts on the same topic.

I recall when MR was a great place to share information, and read about new technology coming from Apple. Now it's nothing more than Engadget II; people whining about things, and posting "If Apple doesn't do XXX they're doomed", and the "Apple Sky is falling..."

It's all about choice. If you don't like where they're headed, or not doing...move on.

The S4 was nothing but an incremental update.

The next update will be huge. You'll be able to do many new things, such as check email, surf the web and even use a GPS.

Everyone wants a big update so they can do the same functions.

Hardware-wise I feel Apple excels. The iPhone 5 is my perfect phone. Software, I wish we had a file system (won't happen) and the ability to set default apps. Beyond that I'd like more battery life if I really want to nitpick

If Android had a phone with the size and performance of the iPhone I'd probably look closer.

The S4 has a bigger, higher resolution screen which some people like and better integration with Google services. However, I don't think anything else about it really advances past the iPhone--they do essentially the same things with a different UI. Ok, so it pauses a video when you look away--yawn.

If I were to jump ship to Android, it certainly wouldn't be for the ugly plastic monstrosity that is the S4, but for the HTC One. That's the nicest Android phone yet and worthy of praise--though the camera is a bit lacking.

It would be even better if the One were a Nexus device, but I guess you can't have it all in the Android world.

Apple lagging behind

This is serious. I couldn't agree with you more in that Apple is behind and no longer the leader in smartphone technology. You mentioned the Galaxy phone but have you seen the HTC One? Amazing!!!! Apple keeps up with the release of "s" every other year and its an embarrassment to the Company.:(

What is it that a file system on iOS would do for you that you can't accomplish already? Serious question, for me I can't think of anything but you may have a need that I don't. I'm jailbroken and have iFile but never use it. I also have a Galaxy Nexus and the file system is a complete mess. Box and Dropbox are both better solutions, for me.

I haven't read too many reviews about the HTC One but I believe the camera is suppose to be outstanding. Just not MP wise. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

You say Apple is lagging behind and not innovating and use the Galaxy S4 as an example? It's totally a very incremental update.

Now the HTC One that is a fine device.

Dont confuse bigger screens and more megaixels with innovation.

A true innovation woud be a smaller battery with double life. Or the option to send holographic messages starwars style.

What does it mean to "lag behind"?

Does it mean their phones are lagging? Does it mean their services aren't working as they previously had? Does it mean their devices no longer fit your use? If they don't, get something else... these are tools for work.

What does it mean that they're "lagging behind", though?

Depends how you store your files, If you like documents stored per app basis then file system provides nothing

I store my files based upon content (same as I do on my Mac and in cloud services I use)

If I want to find a file, I don't always know what app created it, but I know the subject and roughly when I created, unless iOS provides a search feature that searches documents in all apps but I am not aware of it

I can think of nothing worse than having to open the app that created a file, and then hoping the document I want is there
Why not just have a file manager so you can store files how you want, click the file and it opens in whatever app created it

Can you share documents on iOS between apps without having the document duplicated?

Please do so ASAP.

The only thing holding me back is I do love my iPad and my other Apple gear in the sig, and I dont know if the Samsung Galaxy will play along nice!

I'm sure for every iOS app there is something similar in the Play store. Download double twist and Google Music Manager to manage your music.

Galaxy S 4 >htc one

Only thing the one has on the 4 is a better design.

But it's function over form though, the nice looks isn't going to outdo performance of the galaxy S 4 with a superior processor and more functionality.

It's funny to read the S4 dismissed as no more of an update than the iPhone 5 was to the 4S.

Really?

Let's start with the increase in screen size. The iPhone 5 gained .5" of screen size and the device was made physically longer (than the 4S/4) to do so (albeit thinner and lighter).

The S4 gained .2" of screen size and yet the device is actually slightly smaller than (in addition to also being thinner and lighter). In my opinion Apple could have accomplished the same thing--or at least not increased the device's height.

There was an additional 176 pixels added to the iPhone 5, vertically, for a total of 112,640 more pixels than the iPhone 4 had in 2010. The iPhone 4S has about 85% of the pixels as the iPhone 5. The S4 gained pixels both horizontally and vertically, increasing from 921,600 to 2,073,600. The S3 has just 45% then pixels of the S4.

I could do the same for the camere. Then iPhone had a modest camera update from the 4S. The S4 has a significantly improved camera over the 3S.

So to me saying "see, better camera, bigger screen, thinner and lighter... just like the iPhone 5!" seems odd. That is before looking at all the other things it brings to the table.

Those of us in the US will get the same Snapdragon 600 in the GS4 as we do in the HTC One....

And according to early benchmarks, the HTC One actually out performs the GS4 (both versions).

I'm excited to check out the One - VERY sleek looking, same 1080p screen, though HTC goes LCD (which is my preference over AMOLED) and I like that they are trying something different with the camera.

As long as the battery life is decent, the HTC One will be my next Android phone - though I'm not up for contract until September, so Google/Motorola still have time to 'wow' me.

Dame cpu but clocked higher on the s4.

Samsung would have been smart to make the design like the one, with a removable battery, and the s4 internals

Higher clock speed doesn't necessarily mean better performance - as I said, some initial benchmarks have shown the One actually is FASTER than the GS4 - even the Exynos version.

But really - any difference in performance is going to be less than negligible. You won't notice it in real life usage. Both are at the top of the smartphone line (and rightfully so seeing as they are the two newest).

I prefer the One because:

(1) LCD > AMOLED in my opinion
(2) Degisn of the One is vastly superior to the GS4
(3) Sense 5 > TouchWiz from what I've read (given my preferences) - plus all those bloatware features Samsung vomits into their phones are useless to me....
(4) I hate Samsung's marketing strategies

I hope the One gets its chance. Really think it's a great device and hope they have enough money to market it well and give Samsung some competition in the Android space.

Ok I have seen this comment about the HTC One too many times from iPhone users. NO THIS IS NOT THE BEST ANDROID PHONE TO DATE. It may be one of the best looking, but read some reviews before you call it the best android. The new sense is crap, and it makes the phone lag. Sure looks are a big part of a phone, but the UI is what makes a phone great, and that is something the htc one does not do. So please all you iphone user that just want metal body phones please stop saying the htc one is the best android phone.

Have you read the reviews about sense 5? They are all crap. All the ones that I have seen say it slows the One down, and it is down right ugly. Touchwiz is not great either, but at least it does not slow the phone down.

Pretty much these. Performance on the phones will be pretty much identical so it comes down to looks, the screen, the camera, and battery life. HTC clearly has the advantage in the first three instances, battery life we will have to wait and see after they are both released. Now of course Samsung will vastly outsell HTC. They have a far larger marketing budget and HTC can barely get the damn thing in stores.

Samsung very much did what Apple gets criticized for and just upped the internal specs. I saw the load of "new features" at the presentation and none look useful. They just fill the spec sheet.
