Apple is taking to long and I have changed why I am buying

Yes I am waitting for the iMac just like a bunch of others. I was going to buy the 27" with the i7, 2tb and ssd upgrades. With all the time I was watting I have now decided not to get the SSD. So apple will still get my sale just a little less money from me.

I have come to think that 256 GB for $600 basicly is just a boot drive. And that is a lot of money to spend on somthing that only saves me time on running programs.

I am just wondering if anyone else has changed there minds on what they were and are going to buy when ever apple let's out the new iMac?

Getting a 256 gig SSD for a boot drive is overkill. You only need half or 1/3 that for boot space.

You know you can always add a SSD later.
 
I'm just back and forth, can't decide.
But I want a 128 SSD if that'll be an option.
To bad one can't change the HDD/SSD as simple as the memory, would be much cheaper and one can get a good one from OWC
 
I agree with all that! Only thing is I use boot camp and having 128 / 2 for say doesnt leave much. Plus As said we always can add it later if I want too. Just changing the main drive is a pain with the thermal temp now being internal!!

I am expecting news for third month already and it is killing me. I have no machine of my own, and I've been waiting for ages to move to Mac. I read people rumoring about every aspect but I didn't see a rumor saying whether 2011 will have easily accessible disk bay... This would help a lot... Not needing to tear down the whole computer just for a HDD upgrade. So I hope they make this happen.

So basically I changed my mind for the SSD and RAM upgrade and decided to buy it default and then once required to add SSD and/or RAM if I decide that I need them (I surely do, but it's matter of timing and funding). I also changed my mind on going for the Highest End i7, but that still bugs me, so I guess I'll have to wait and see few things:

1. What will "Sandy" give us on the benchmarks...

2. Whether Apple by chance will decide that 4GB RAM is too little and will make 8GB standard (tough one... but Apple, seriously, 4GB RAM is so '00...)

3. Situation with the SSD... HDD should be discontinued according to me, and factories shut down... Everything is pointing that future is with the SSD (no noise, better reliability, less heat etc). But I think consumers will be milked few more years before full transition is made.

I hope at least 2 of my "wishes" to become true... :)
 
Apple have become the industry standard bearer for the mantra Profit before product, it is unlikely to change anytime in the future unfortunately..... Until some company comes out with the next game changer product and drops apple on its backside but by then it will be too late. I wish Apple would have a look back at what it once stood for and bring that mantra back again.
 
Because Apple is taking too long, I've changed my mind about getting any new technology forever. From now on, I am going to be buying things that are at least eight years old. That way, it is tried and tested and all the bugs are out of the system. I now have my eyes set on a 1.67ghz P4 beige box (single core of course because we all know that it'z allz aboutz clockz speed) with 256Mb RAM and a 60Gb 5400rpm hard drive just for booting and running Windows ME. I'll be adding a bunch of 250Gb external hard drives to make this kitty purrrr.

I won't buy an SSD until the price comes down dramatically. Everyone buying these small SSD's for a pretty penny isn't going to be able to give them away in the near future.

Buy an ssd put it in ur old machine to hold you till the refresh then buy the new model take you ssd out of your old put it in the new one problem solved.
 
Apple hopefully will make SSD a basic option in the new IMACS. After all just putting a sandybridge chip and a thunderbolt port in the new Imacs won't cut it. I would think these might be the standard options
(1) 128gb SSD + 500gb HDD
(2) 256 gb SSD
(3) 1 TB HDD

Prices of SSD are already dropping. As for Apple taking to long, your right and hopefully the wait will be worth it.

128gb + 2tb standard with 3tb upgrade would be ideal.
No way will they put anything less than 1tb in the IMac.

If the SSD comes with a magic wand, so one don't have to tare down the whole iMac to molecules just to change the SSD.

Really? Care to buy my 1.42ghz PowerPC? It's about that old, has 512MB RAM and 80GB hard drive. To make sure you won't accidentally use any new technology, most software released recently doesn't even run on PPC's.

i changed my mind too about the ssd .. besides im not goin to use it for professional video editing .. im ok with waiting an extra 10 secs for the computer to start up

If only Apple would design iMac to have upgradeable SSD blade, as they do with iMac's RAM, that would be heaven, huh

Just unscrew the cover, plug it in, and put things back .. voila, it's on finder and you can reinstall OSX to SSD

A quick look at the Staples web site shows them offering a 2TB Seagate external USB drive for $131.

When you can find a 2TB SSD for $150, then the change might happen. At the moment, SSD is way too expensive for high capacity use. I have 4TB of external storage on my iMac, and paid about $ 400 for the drives. No SSD is going to offer that capacity at that price anytime soon.

SSDs can still fail anyway. Considering the sheer number of HDDs out, they are pretty reliable anyway. I've never had an HDD fail in 5 years of using Macs and 20 years of using Windows systems.
 
SSD's are overrated.

They are for the geek freaks to brag about amongst themselves.

So what if you boot faster!

I mean how many times a day do you boot?

How many times do you have to boot to save 60 minutes?

What's 60 minutes worth to you? How much do you get paid per hour.

How many times will you have to boot, using the money earned from the time saved to pay for that SSD ?

SSD don't just help with boot time, they make opening apps so much faster. And accessing files is also greatly improve.

Well if you follow the thread the SSD is used for boot/system drive and data on the HDD.

But let's take what you say into consideration and run it through what I asked.

How many times do you boot in a day, how many times do you open apps ( assuming the app is on the SSD )

How long will it take to save one hour?

How many hours do you need to work to pay for that SSD?

People cried for years and years for MORE CAPACITY ..... now they are jumping BACKWARDS to save a second or two a day!

I completely agree with you, I don't understand why people would want to go from having 1-2Tb HDD @ 7200 RPM to just a 256Gb solid state drive, sure it might boot faster but in the end of the day who cares -,-

Well considering the biggest bottleneck is the hdd.
SSD is way better for not only faster boot times and app launching, but better overall system experience-- faster wake up times , no moving parts for longevity, in app experience esp for games and editing.

Whats the point if a high end CPU with a bottlenecked hdd?

Do some more research before you bash things you dont quite seem to understand.
