Apple's Lies!!

Why do they lie on the site and say that it's a size 00 Phillips you need when you actually need a eyeglass repair kit size screwdriver? I wasted so much time trying to find parking at the mall to get a craftsman set of precision screwdrivers... none of which were small enough, including the size 00. And why do most people on this site post that its a size 00 you need. Well, YOU DON'T. Get the $2.00 kit at your local drug store instead. And people who believe that you need a size 00, pls stop spreading the lies unless craftsman has their sizes wrong.

Okay, so I'm all in favor of the idea of reading instructions... but why didn't you actually look at the screw before you went to the mall and got the screwdriver? And did you seriously not own one of those sets of 5x tiny screwdrivers already? I've had the same set for... since I was like 10 years old.

The difference btwn size 00 and the eyeglasses size is pretty minimal. 00 was so very close to fitting, but would have stripped them for sure if I muscled it.

I don't work with electronics that much, at least none with such small screwdrivers. All my tools are based on fixing cars, so anything that small is usually the star shaped tools.

Actually, i used the 00 and i opened and closed the memory case easily. The nuts are still in place and havent been damaged at all.

probably less of a lie, and more of a mistake. just call customer service, ask to be forwarded to customer relations and then politely let them know theres a mistake that caused you inconvenience.

I used an eyeglass screwdriver from my mom to open my MacBook Pro memory compartment. I don't know the sizes of screwdrivers though, , probably could've used the set of screwdrivers I got in a kit at CompUSA, but I couldn't find them at the time.

I used the smaller of the 2 Philips screwdrivers from my set of "CK" watchmaker's screwdrivers. I guess they'd be the same thing as eyeglasses screwdrivers. Well, that screwdriver was marked "00".

I need to go to the drug store tomorrow and buy a new set.

I was wondering the same thing actually, I just sold my RAM and need to pull it out. I looked all over for that darn screwdriver.

the 00 works just fine, in fact my craftsman 00 works well. Sometimes with craftsman tools the points are too sharp and the don't work so well, but a little filing of the tool and it works great.

I know exactly how the OP feels but may have the answer here. Quite often if you buy a cheap set of screwdrivers, they've been machined and finished cheaply too.If you pay a bit more, you get better quality screwdrivers.

For example, I left my really good set in the UK, moved here and needed to get into my powerbook case to do the hard drive, so I bought a new - but very cheap - set of screwdrivers from a little, local hardware store for about AU$6.

Sure enough the 00 Philips driver didn't fit the PowerBook screws of the "same" 00 size. I then went to a proper hardware store and bought another set of decent screwdrivers for around AU $15 (2.5x the price of the other set!) and the 00 philips from that set fits perfectly.

Most designated "watchmaker's screwdriver kits" "craft screwdriver kits" etc, are actually pretty high quality. A cheap set of generic screwdrivers with purportedly the same size fittings are often not good quality. Ergo, the difference in ultimate price you pay is not much - AU $9 in my case.But the difference in materials and workmanship is reflected in the difference in prices between a cheap set and a better set.

Moral of the story - buy once, buy good.

A knife is fine if the screws come out smoothly, but as soon as you run into any kind of problems - like a stuck screw or one that's starting to round out - then a knife becomes useless. Plus it's more dangerous and you run more risk of putting an even bigger scratch across whatever it is you're unscrewing. You don't want to start taking a knife to the insides of a laptop either.

All in all, a knife is probably a last resort if the hardware store is closed and you have a burning ambition to unscrew something but don't have the right screwdriver

Why is it when some people have a problem, they automatically assume everyone else has the same problem even though no one else has even mentioned it? Plus, it's all Apple's fault because they purposely lied just to screw with people. Even worse when they're trying to ask for help, but are so inflammatory, you kinda almost don't want to help them. Then they get all pissed off when we make fun of them.

The fact is that if people put two minutes into thinking about it, they should be able to figure out the tiny things they are complaining weren't explained to them.

LOL, fair enough. Starting a thread that shouts "Apple LIES" for this reason is probably a bit dramatic. But equally, when the manual says get an 00 screwdriver, you buy an 00 screwdriver and it doesn't fit, it's easy to get slightly irritated (slightly).

And I still wouldn't recommend to people to use a knife...

I actually am glad to see people standing up with comments like "Since when did everyone stop taking pride in being resourceful?" I love online forums, but I too am astonished with how completely helpless and worthless people can be. Complaining about something that no one on a forum is going to be able to help them with, or wanting someone to DO EVERYTHING FOR THEM ("How much does product x cost? Where can I find product x?" "Spend 5 seconds with Google and find out!!!") is really pathetic.

For the record, I just used the smaller of the two screwdrivers I have in my computer toolkit, which appears to be a size 00 (at any rate, it's not an eyeglass screwdriver). It worked perfectly to upgrade my RAM.

is it really worth having such a misleading thread title for such an exceedingly minor problem?

You don't know what happened to me on the way to Sears to get a set of screwdrivers. Normally I wouldn't complain, but I had such a tight schedule that day that I tried to be 100% sure that I bought the right screwdriver by searching the apple website and getting the one the site specified. I own all craftsman tools and I've always thought them to be of the highest quality. So when it didn't fit, what am I to think?

As for not being resourceful, that is a non-argument. I built my own PC and I do repair work on my own car. This thread was a rant. Maybe I should rant about Craftsman for making a 00 Phillips screwdriver that doesn't fit the Macbook's screw?
