Apple maps is actually great... in fully supported areas/regions. The issue is, fully supported areas are not as wide as Google maps. As much as I like Apple maps, I still have to rely on Google maps majority of times. And yes, Google maps is truly unintuitive. It’s basically designed to be just a yellow pages. Once you want to use it like a regular map, it’s downright frustrating.

I think it depends on where said fully supported areas/regions are. I live in the Ozarks, and while certain roads I've been down are mismarked, often they're not even *ON* Google Maps.

Additionally, it doesn't always come down to that either. In 2015 I was in Tampa (my wife was undergoing a specialized surgery). On our way back to the airport at like 4 a.m. the day we left, there was all SORTS of construction going on. Apple Maps correctly and accurately routed me around it. Google Maps had me driving into a construction zone with a huge 30' deep pit. LOL

While I'm a big proponent of Google Maps versus Apple Maps normally, Apple Maps actually saved my bacon today.

Went to the Atlanta Jazz Festival today (https://www.atlanta.net/events/atlanta-jazz-festival/) and the park parking lot was full. So naturally, I ended up having to park further away.

Now I thought I had pinned my parking location when I got there via Google Maps. However, when it was time to go, things turned sour real quick. Not only was Google Maps not user friendly trying to retrieve this information, but it was down right unavailable.

Here's why: View attachment 839163

While I did not know this when I went to pin my parking location; I WOULD NEVER ALLOW GOOGLE TO "ALWAYS" track my location due to their dubious practices. So since I had selected "only while using app" I basically was screwed!!! So what to do right!?

Well I remember, a lot of times in coming and going that Apple Maps will randomly suggest travel reminders. So I'm like ok, hopefully Apple Maps saved my parking location.

Sure enough it had... WHEW!!! I was able to get back to my car easy peasy!!!

I've ragged on Apple Maps in the past, but it actually came in handy today. And even if Apple Maps is tracking me in the background (hopefully on device only), I certainly trust Apple more than Google.

Just wanted to share.

LOL, this is pure user error. You're mad because you set Google Maps not to track and it did what you asked it to do? Good grief.

Curious, how come?

Google is coming to get him.

I use google maps out of habit but I’ve no issues with Apple maps. On a few occasions I’ve had to use it when google maps failed.

This experience has definitely opened my eyes. I honestly never gave Apple Maps a try as I was/am too firmly entrenched with Waze and Google Maps.

Maybe at some point in the near future, I'll give them a proper chance.

That screenshot you posted is for if you want Google Maps to *automatically* set your parking location.

I have no trouble manually setting my parking spot and I just double checked that I have Google Maps locations permissions set to "while using". I just touch the blue dot and in the menu that pops up is an option to mark your parking location. It's in "step 4" further down on that page.

Thanks for this very useful information, but I must admit it's not very intuitive.

Also, how do you remove the parking location!? Overall still not as elegant as Apple implementation.

Google had a big head start so it will take Apple a while just to get caught up. UI wise Apple maps is great.

Mine just seems to go away. Maybe when you activate driving directions and get a certain distance away that wipes it?

edit: I tested it today and it appears that is the case. I marked my parking spot and it was still there hours later. When I started navigation home I could still see it on the map BUT when I got home it was gone.

I have to be honest and say that given Google's huge head start, they screw up just as much as Apple used to be accused of doing.

When Apple Maps was first updated/brought in-house, anything other than major roads and highways were often terribly inaccurate. It took me several updates and a *YEAR* to get Maps updated on the road I live on.

Fast forward to 2015, when I had both Maps and Google Maps on my phone. Apple Maps successfully routed me around a huge construction zone in Tampa. Had I followed Google Maps, I would have ended up in what is now the basement of a new building. LOL

As late as 6 months ago, Google Maps *STILL* hadn't updated the road I lived on or others right beside it. Sure, I live somewhat rurally, but I mean, I'm like 10 miles off an interstate.

IMHO, it's gotten to the point where the vast majority of the criticisms are either

- ridiculous and unfair, OR
- centered on specific 'features' someone wants, and how butthurt they are if the other option doesn't have it.

Being I no longer have a commute, and still use Waze for when I do need GPS. It's rare that I even open Google Maps.

Still haven't had a need to use Apple Maps, have a hard time seeing it replacing Waze for me personally. I'm still pulling for it's overall success however.

I get a popup all the time showing Apple Maps has saved my parking spot. I think it senses when you have disconnected from the car's Bluetooth connection then saves the location. It does work pretty well.

Mine did this for a week after the feature came out, then I couldn't get it to work any more :(

I mean, Apple Maps could track the location because Apple Maps must have been detecting your location in the background. The same permission you denied Google.

Its cool it worked, but this is about as Apples or Oranges as you can get.
What I wonder though, is it because Apple Maps was Always, or was it that Apple Maps was smart enough to know that the last GPS lock it had on you once you closed the app would be where you parked?

It's definitely "persistent" tracking on Apple Maps part, as I didn't/don't use the app at all. The big difference, is I trust Apple in this regard and hardly would want Google tracking at all times.

The more I think about it, it's actually both. The tracking is persistent, but it's also smart enough to know you've stopped moving and geo-tag that location. Again, I have no problem with this FROM APPLE!!!
