Google Maps rolled out speed limits earlier this year. Not sure if it’s available everywhere yet though. Speed limits show up for me about 80-90% of the time here in San Diego. Some roads/sections of roads don't have speed limit info yet.

Doesn’t look like they’ve reached the UK yet!

There's no simple answer. Google Maps still has far more worldwide road and POI data and in general it is more accurate. They also have Street View, while Apple is just getting started on that. Most people feel Google Maps still has a better handle on traffic.

But I still use Apple Maps almost all of the time now. It's cleaner, runs smoother, is far better integrated with the phone, watch, and CarPlay. The quality of the maps and traffic info has improved drastically from the early days. For me, it is generally indistinguishable from Google Maps now, and better for most of my needs. But I live in Northern California, which is always the first place Apple updates.

Also, Apple's implementation of street view is substantially better than Google Maps from a quality standpoint, but right now it only covers three locations, so it's hardly more than a demo of what is to come. But I'm excited about where that is heading.
90% of the time there isn't an issue with Apple Maps (if you live in countries like Canada, US, UK, etc), but for that 10% of the time when it doesn't work (i.e. takes you 30 minutes out of your way, doesn't know that there is a ton of traffic coming up or hasn't updated a finished area of construction on a major highway), it can be the a real PIA.
I had personally requested that a new highway junction (Union Valley Pkwy to US 101 in Santa Maria) be updated to Apple for over 2 years before they fixed it in Apple Maps. And I'm not talking some small town in the middle of nowhere either. Santa Maria is a town of approx 100,000 people. Things like this can be annoying and add 10-30 minutes or longer to a trip.
Apple Maps is drastically better, I just don't think it will ever catch up to Google Maps. If you are dead set against using Google (or Waze since Google owns it), Apple Maps will work for most people. I always recommend verifying the route before leaving and "hope" the traffic is accurate.
ANd 3D maps is cool for the few areas that Apple has done it, but Street View is still infinitely better when going to a new location.

Yes, love this feature! Still not 100% accurate, unfortuantely. I still have areas reading old speed limits from a couple years back (i.e. it will say speed limit is 55mph, when it is actually 65mph.) Back roads are still missing speed limits in a lot of cases. Great for any highway though!

Apple’s new maps look so good. Far better than Google or Waze. But they have not yet fully rolled them out. I had them on my old 7+ which was in the beta, but not yet on my 11.
Unfortunately they don’t seem ready for general use yet. I have had severe routing errors on the new maps. Mostly with it wanting me to take restricted access roads. Hopefully they will have this fixed soon, because the old Apple map always worked at least as good as Google for me in the NE US.
I will continue to have Google installed if only for offline routing.

Can we opt-in if we have 4x4?

Apple Maps exists because Apple needs to be in control of its own mapping software and not be dependent on Google for something so important. It doesn't exist to make your life better or try to dethrone Google Maps which is superior. People can use Apple Maps if they want, but it's a second rate service.
