What is your exit strategy once Apple Music is canned like Google Music? As with any business, the laggards lose momentum and share as the popular forms (Spotify and Amazon) continue to gain share. This leads to consolidation as those weaker demanded services close down (Google first then Apple). It'll also happen with video streaming too. Apple's video streaming service has no content of interest and will die like Netflix.

You are completely wrong. Utterly and completely wrong.

Second music streaming service worldwide and integrated in millions of iPhones and iPads.

It's not dying and it isn't going anywhere.

I was recently reviewing my regular payments and I wondered why I'm paying money to Apple every month to use their music app. So I stopped.

I have Amazon Prime, which comes with Amazon Music. The free version is really very good. The interface is vastly better than Apple Music. Making the switch has forced me to listen to new music. Which is great. I'm letting Amazon pick and discovering all kinds of new stuff. And I can train it to learn what I like and what I don't.

I don't care about owning music. I just want to listen to music sometimes. (I'm mostly a podcast guy.) Amazon Music is essentially free to me since I have Amazon Prime anyway.

The one downside was that I was getting endless error messages on my iPad, helpfully warning me that I didn't have an Apple Music subscription. In the end I just deleted the app.

The HomePod speaker thing is a flop. If Apple Music continues the trend line that saw Google Music canceled then Apple Music will be canned within 12 months.

Well, it’s not a flop... and you do know Apple Music is now available on all Amazon Alexa devices too right?

Among other devices that aren’t made by Apple...

With Google shutting down their music service now is the time for Apple to follow suit.

Well, what I had in Google Play Music (or whatever it was called - basically it was DRM free tracks that were cheaper than from iTunes) got transitioned to Youtube Music. Did it yesterday in fact. From what I can tell it's a rebranding more than anything.

While Apple does a decent job of Apple Music for Android (they had dropped the ball massively there for a while so it was a close call) I'll be lazy and stick with that. Otherwise I'll just switch to Spotify. I was more happy with Spotify for discovery although happier with Apple Music for cross-platform management.

on the land line mr. smith.
I’ve lived through vinyl and cassette tapes and CDs and the iTunes Store (bought a song the first day!) and ripping all my CDs onto hard drives and wondering how to store all those jewel cases and spending days with iTunes Match uploading and downloading. And now, finally, with Apple Music, all my music—and so much more—is instantly available to me. Any time. Anywhere. I spend no time worrying about storing or indexing or finding music. I just listen to it. I am happy.

What??

No Eight tracks?

I still have a few in a box somewhere...going in the time capsule at some point.

I am reasonably happy with Apple Music, mostly for device integration and family plan. Hard to beat on the value.

I still have a Pandora account too from the early days of streaming...as I really like their algorithms to find new artists. Tried Spotify some years back, and at the time, it was not as good. I expect they solved that long ago, but I can't justify 3 options.

And yes, I used to buy music, but would only do it now to support an artist. Usually the make more on swag or live shows...so, less and less inclined to buy music.

Hahahahahahaha... good one!

Wait, it's a joke, right?

With Google shutting down their music service now is the time for Apple to follow suit. Amazon and Spotify are the clear winners in this saga as consolidation is the key here. People are abandoning Apple Music as they do NOT want to rent music. They want to own it just like Steve said. Perhaps Apple wouldn't be in this embarrassing position if they had listened to Steve's voice in the first place.

Amazon? I don’t think I have found a single person who uses it.

Tried Amazon Music several times. Their music app was (is?) horrendous. Just like the Alexa app - horrendous. I don't know what it is about Amazon and their inability to develop and improve their apps, but they are a disaster. Considering all the money they have, you'd think app development and progress would not be an issue ?‍♂️

I love Amazon Music Unlimited, especially since I switched to Apple Music last month. I find myself still using the stations and playlists from Prime music over the ones on Apple. Amazon Unlimited is only $79/yr on top of Prime which is significantly cheaper than Apple. They also offer an Music HD option which I sampled a while back but sadly my hearing isn't what it used to be so it wasn't worth it for me. I also prefer the Amazon interface but that is clearly subjective. I have never been a fan of the Apple Music app even for my substantial iTunes library; I've been using a third party for a long time.

Amazon pays artists the least, Apple Music pays artists the l most. That alone justifies why I use Apple Music.
That is an excellent point. That certainly seems to be true for Amazon Prime Music, and also why it has such a limited catalogue. Amazon Unlimited (with a comparable catalogue to Apple) pays double what Apple pays.

I understand people want to "own" music. But that means buying a LP or CD. Buying 0.99 tracks from iTunes does not make you own it more than if you just stream it. There is no advantage over Apple music. On Spotifiy and Apple Music, you can also just download tracks. What is the difference, other than you didn't pay for it?

Or are you just mad you spent thousands of dollars on your iTunes libarary and it has no value anymore?

Big difference. When you pay for them the files are yours forever (as long as you keep them, just the same with a physical format). You can edit metadata. If an album is removed from streaming but you bought it, you still have access to it.

You can always download again all that music (at least on iTunes store).

Besides, if you want to support the artist, they get much much more from paid music than streaming.

I understand your point but buying a copy of an album on digital is the same as buying a vinyl or CD, just another format.
