It's so annoying when you want to press to hold, it always activates 3D touch. This makes deleting apps or moving them near impossible with 3D touch on without using two hands and being so careful. I end up just turning off 3D touch as I barely use it and being able to move apps around and delete them is a more common thing for me.

I just don't see the point of having both, I think 3D touch is a useless feature that's a waste of space and money inside the iPhone, I'd rather it be gone and no-one else picking it up is a good indication of this. If Apple insist on it staying, then get rid of press to hold and put a menu option when you 3D touch to delete or move the app. There are menu options already there, I just don't see why no one thought of that over at Apple, it only makes sense.

None will happen though you can disable 3D Touch under Settings - General - Accesibility - 3D Touch.

Yeah I've noticed it's now frustrating to try and delete an app because 3D Touch tries to activate. I didn't have an issue with iOS 9, however. iOS 10 perhaps increased the sensitivity level of 3D Touch.

Tested on my 6S and 7

I agree with OP - and sometimes it brings Siri up - there are things like links that I can't access anymore since the phone wants to do other things with a press

3D Touch is simply the iPhone's right click.

It's not meant to be used a lot, but more of an extension of iOS.

Change the sensitivity in Settings

the point is to have an extra way of interaction with the device, not replacing touch and hold. The only complain is that the current iOS UI does not have an indicator on an 3D touchable UI element. I think they'll fix that when the number of 3D Touch enabled device increase

OP is right to be frustrated. Deleting apps on a 3D Touch phone is rediculous! Apple definitely don't need to get rid of 3D Touch though, the functionality since ios10 has improved drastically. All they need to do is change the way we delete and move around apps

I agree that's a good comparison, but if 3D Touch is "right click", then what is Long Press? Middle click? The only place where I really know the Long Press gesture has a serious place is on the Springboard app (home screen). I would be very happy if they update the home screen to let us trigger moving / deleting apps via 3D Touch, and for the rest of the OS make it so that a Long Press is just a slow way of triggering a 3D touch, usable for legacy devices which don't recognize 3D touch yet.

I suspect it will take a few years for that to happen though, because Apple needs the usefullness of 3D Touch to be a selling argument to buy new hardware, rather than just allowing us to do more with old hardware. I suspect they'll be more open to combining 3D Touch and Long Press once the vast majority of non-3D Touch devices is out of circulation.

The problem with having both 3D Touch and Long Press is that both represent "additional hidden actions", and there is no real guideline to know what type of hidden actions is triggered by the one versus the other. if it was as simple as saying "one is always for moving or deleting, and the other is always for editing" that could work - but it's not quite that simple. There is just too much conceptual overlap between what these 2 gestures are supposed to represent.

I don't think they will ever find a simple UI element to indicate to the user where a 3D touch might help. Looking back at the introduction video of iOS 7, when Jony Ive was telling everyone that the graphical changes in iOS 7 were all about "thinking in layers" and adding "the 3rd dimension" (with parallax, etc), in hindsight it seems likely to me that this UI change was linked to the simultaneous development of Force Touch / 3D Touch. Maybe Apple was expecting this concept of layers to somehow come together both from a hardware and software POV. But in the 3 years since, I haven't really seen it click. If there was an easy way to signal hidden functionality, I think they should have found it by now.

Why is it ridiculous? When you drive a car do you accidentally slam in the brakes every time?

The sensitivity of 3dt can be altered. A pretty firm press is required to bring up 3dt firm enough, IMO, not to confuse it with a press to delete an app.

Because one can easily accidentally apply more pressure. Lots of people in this thread seem to agree, so don't go thinking your opinion is fact.

Car's break pedal requires substantially more pressure and has a range of movement that we can feel and control. iPhones have computer screens

One can easily also disable or adjust the pressure threshold for 3dt.

You might not be able to use 3dt as intended if you can't modulate the pressure on the screen effectively.
Hence why myself and many others in this thread are suggesting an update which changes the way to move/delete apps

I definitely don't think they should get rid of 3D Touch... but press and hold should probably be eliminated.. they should just add a 3D Touch menus item to edit icons... this might also be a good place to have a settings shortcut for individual apps.

Long touch and 3D touch contradict each other. Long touch is superior for one-handed use since it doesn't require counter resistance on the opposite side which is difficult to do if reaching the far edge of the display. So, not only is 3D touch redundant but it also takes up precious space and drains battery.

They already did. Thanks to our "Whining" Apple made iOS 10 overall faster than iOS 9.Why wouldnt the same happen here?
The "whining" made it faster? Or it's slower because of "planned obsolescence"?
Further proof of planned obsolescence

Quite a juxtaposition (and that's really a euphemism) just to fit it in with whatever latest story is being spun and deflected with.

How could anything be taken as anything but silly when the story changes from one opposite to another just to fit the "argument" of the day.
