My current M1 iPad Pro + MKB total weight is 1.075KG, not too bad for the versatility it offers.
I don’t think I will mind too much if the MKB weights a bit more, both for 11” version and 13” version.
Oh I don't like it weighing more. My old iPad Pro 11 is heavy enough. In fact, it could be lighter. For carrying around, it's not a problem. But try using it like a book and it feels a bit heavy after a while.

The magic keyboard is the reason I haven’t upgraded to the new iPad.
Been using the smart keyboard on several generations of iPad’s and it’s superb. Yes it doesn’t have the touchpad or nice keys but it doesn’t fall over backwards either.

The magic keyboard is great for turning the iPad into a laptop but the iPad is a terrible laptop. It’s made to be a touch device and the high position the magic keyboard put’s the display into makes for uncomfortable and fatiguing touch use.

Very disappointed they stopped selling the smart keyboard for the new models.
Logitech’s solution is not good as it requires far too much space behind the iPad, smart keyboard was perfect.
Same. I was/am a huge fan of the smart folio keyboard. I did try hard to like the magic keyboard but just couldn't deal with the wobble. Bummer.

I had the same problem on the last Magic Keyboard. It doesn't seem any worse here in all honesty.

It’s not something that realistically can be fixed as it’s simple physics. The keyboard is a counter weight. A dedicated laptop will always be better in this regard.

My MKB stays on my desk at home and only used it briefly on my lap. The weight distribution is definitely off. If I need to work on something on the couch, I’ll reach for my MBA instead.

There’s some irony - Apple intended for the iPads to be the preferred couch device. lol.

Someone like OWC needs to have a slip on tungsten rod that adds weight to the user side of the keyboard, but adds little bulk (hence the heavy metal).

perhaps even a "green" version, made from re-cycled light globe filaments. oh hang on ... these are now replaced by LEDs, so ... ahem at least I tried to be green.

Forget the mgk, get the zugu case, sits flat, as good as a laptop on the lap and has lots of angles, better protection and 2 pencil holders.
iPad is a touch device not a laptop.

That case weighs 510 grams. The iPad weighs 444 grams. The iPad deserves a case that weighs nothing and protects the iPad. I suspect better than a case is Applecare. Drop it and you can get it repaired. And don't have a case. That way its light, which is the real point of having a touch device.

As for typing, maybe apple intelligence will recognise one's voice and listen to our spoken word even if watching the TV, and it'll type perfectly. If only ...

Overblown complaint. I use it on my lap in bed just fine. No it is not as stable as a MacBook, but by no means a problem or unusable.

Zugu cases are excellent - I have them for my 13" M4 & Mini 6 (and had them on 3 other iPads) for use at times on the go or in bed but much prefer the MKB for the M4 Pro in general usage.

Off topic. That NPlayer dilemma we discussed about it defaulting to select mode when trying to play a video... well, mysteriously it's been fixed.

I meant to bring it to your attention when I noticed it... but it's been working as designed for a while now.

I still see it when using the MKB - ver. 3.12.17 on 13" M4. Try to click a folder open or play a video by selecting with trackpad and it goes into select mode and unusable.

For reference, I have the same app and version and I just tried to play 2 mp4 videos I downloaded from YouTube, as well as a TV show on my Plex server, and every video played without any problems. I initiated playback via the trackpad.

I just wish Apple made something rugged and that worked on a table, all by itself.

Phones and iPads should be made like Thinkpad shells - very tough composites that never dent and can bounce without leaving a scratch. iPads are supposed to be portable. They cannot even survive an Airport check without being protected. They can't even last for a long haul flight - their battery life has never improved. It's either bad design, or they are built to fail. And it's going to be our fault. Heck the iPad is not even proofed against moisture, yet the phones are. How come? They are designed to look bad after we just use them normally. It is not as if these things are cheap. We deserve better. Planned obsolescence stinks.

Very strange. Are you on the beta? Not sure if that has to do with it working for me.

Huh. I drag my 11" M2 Pro all over the place in just the basic Apple case. Not had any issues.

The keyboard case is however useless. I sold it. I just don't bother typing anything on a plane. I will write it hence the pencil on there. Weighs a lot less and I like to travel light.

As for ThinkPads, lets not go there. My PC laptop, a Dell, likes to empty itself in my bag on the way to the airport. Then it only lasts 3h if you are lucky.

Well, this is a spec from a Lenovo 14" (however it has an alloy bottom but composite top):
Battery
• 3-cell (58Wh), integrated
• Supports Rapid Charge (charge up to 80% in 1hr)
Battery life
WUXGA low power (non-touch), Snapdragon® X1E-78-100, 32GB LPDDR5x, Win 11, 58Wh battery, best power efficiency power mode.
• JEITA-BAT 3.0 (Video/Idle): up to 19.32 hours / 37.37 hours @200nits
• Local video playback: up to 34.9 hours @150nits

Rapid charge is pretty useful at the airport I guess ... who knows on the plane. But the battery life is a lot better than the iPad. But it weighs 1.24 kg. Several others in that ball park for battery life. Most also have a spare m.2 slot for an extra internal drive.

Every Apple device has had huge increases in battery life, except for some reductions in the odd incremental iPhone Pro Max's & Plus's (I think the 13 or something had a bit worse battery life). max's have sometimes had less battery life because they push their CPUs harder.

I don't take today's iPads seriously, because for me, such devices are intended to be self powered. And when charging, done so without cables, thanks. I bought an Ultra watch for one reason - its got a better battery. The battery life of an iPad can't make a long haul flight.

You can’t use an ARM windows machine for anything serious as most of the serious stuff hasn’t been retargeted for ARM. Also the claims are absolute garbage on battery life there. And it won’t fit on the table on most planes.

As for long haul are you really using your iPad for 11+ hours solid? Nope you’re queuing for the pooper, falling unconscious, trying to nudge the person next to you over who is unconscious on you and reading a book some of the time as well. Or talking to people and eating.

After a few years with the iPad Pro 2021 12.9 inch with the MKB, I still feel it being quite heavy. The new 2024 iPad Pro set up is much better.
