I completely agree! I have several iPod Classics - and I use them each and every day. I am one who has an extensive music library, and I would love to be able to carry it with me, portable, and be able to choose any of my songs to play when the mood strikes me.

I tried Apple music - and promptly gave up on it when it hosed my computer. No way can I "upload" all my music to the cloud - way too big, and I am not that trusting in clouds anyway. An iPod Touch is completely useless to me - that is just an over zealous iPhone without the phone.

And yes, I do have an iPhone, and 3 iPads, but they too have their purpose. Not to say that I don't listen to music on them - when I am away from my speakers then I do use my phone, but not that frequently.

I bought an iPod Classic modded with a 256 SSD drive - and I love it! The only problem I have is the song limit that Apple has placed on the internal firmware - I can only get about 49,000 songs on it (leaving me unused space).

I really wish Apple would do something with a standalone iPod, that would cater to either high end audiophiles or people with large libraries. I was very disappointed in them when they discontinued the Classic. I still love my iPods, and my iPhone and iPads, so it's not like I'm going away from them. I just want them to focus on what made them great in the first place!!

I agree that the music app on iOS9 is crap. I mean it crashes on my 6S. Seriously, Apple cannot make a stable music app on the 9th release of the supposedly most advance mobile OS? I blame it on Apple music.

But focusing on the iPod? I rather Apple focusses on making iOS (and the music app) great again. Let's face it, we now at the point of the phone being the music player, as standard. Some people are looking for a separate player, but majority of people have been using their phones as their music player for years. That's one of the main selling of the iPhone, to consolidate your iPod, phone, camera, etc into one device. So instead going backwards, I rather have Apple making sure the convergence device to be great, ie. fixing iOS.

Besides, if there are people looking to buy a separate music player, the current iPod lineup fits most of those needs. Let the likes of Sony create expensive high-end MP3 players.

Wait a minute. The iPhone is no replacement for a separate camera. I have far more features and shooting modes in my Nikon Camera.

I've owned half a dozen Nanos. (Wives and daughters kept taking them from me telling me to upgrade). Favorite was the 6th (square, touchscreen). I never wanted my complete music library. Choice overload. I even bought a watch band for it, it was nice especially when traveling. Alas the wife's 6th gen got the power button issue, so she took mine. Plugs it into speakers at work, they have an excellent FM tuner. No other radios work in her office. I see no need for a 7th gen.

My dream would be a 500GB/1TB Classic with iTunes WiFi sync capabilities. Could fit my entire library and never have to hook it up to my computer again.

I'm okay with the 2 tabs on the iOS 9 Music app, because I only used 2 tabs on the iOS 6 Music app. Artists, and Playlists. And I barely use Playlists. To me it's not any different. The organization inside the iOS 9 Artist view and the huge amount of quick play tap areas actually make it more efficient.

As someone who has used iPods since the 2nd gen, and iPhone since 1.0, the iOS 9 music app on my 6 Plus is my preferred version of them all now, especially given the amount of music I have.

The new 9.3 update won't activate on SIM-less devices now (saw this on another forum I go on). So only the iPhone 4 and below would be fine for that now.

Thanks for sharing this is good info.

Don't be silly. The iPhone camera is superior in every way. Especially for capturing motion in low light or sports photography. ;)

Sports...meh...low light...in what universe? I'm a big Apple supporter but the only low light photography I do is with my wife's D3300.

Google irony.
I hardly ever use my iPhone camera. Nikon D750 with a host of lenses is more my thing (see signature).

She's just getting into it and has the basic stuff so far, the standard 18-55 mm lens that comes with it, and the double lens pack with the 1.8F and the macro. Saving up for the 70-200mm lens. My dad was huge into photography (weddings, senior pics, family pics, models) only thing he'll go with is Nikon (I think his latest is the D7100 for everyday shooting). I know that's the big debate though Nikon vs. Canon. (vs. Leika ;))

D7100 is my back up body. The 70-200mm is in my wardrobe and doesn't get too many outings. It's a great lens but weighs a ton. I like to have a few different lenses on me when I head out. It's a great hobby, but not the cheapest!

Part of the reason why is that Apple has not done any major iPod updates since 2012. Why didn't we at least get a new iPod touch in 2014 to debut alongside the iPhone 6/6 Plus with the same new larger display sizes? Considering that every time a redesigned iPhone was released, there would always be a brand new iPod touch to correspond.

They updated the iPod Touch in July last year to the 6th Gen.

Their focus on iPods was due to the massive revenue they brought in. Now that belongs to the iPhone and focus has shifted to that as its their biggest revenue source of all their devices.

That's not entirely accurate. It won't go through the first set up process, but if you stick a SIM in the phone and then take it out after you set it up (you can just skip through the set up screens until you get to the home screen), you basically have an iPod.

The iPod might have led to a reassurgance at Apple but that day has long died. Creating a new stand alone music player will not help Apple. Instead it will hurt Apple becuase of the R&D and marketing that will be put into it to sell it.

Each iPod has had a place.
iPod classic - to hold all your music
iPod nano - to more portable music
iPod shuffle - to use with workouts when a screen isn't needed
iPod touch - to provide a gateway to iPhone.

iPod classic dead becuase the HDDs are available anymore and at the time it didn't make sense to put expensive flash drives at the same size as the HDD in it.
iPod touch was originally designed to drive consumers to iPhone and provide them with a touch screen device that is iPhonelike. Remember the iPhone was only on AT&T until halfway through the iPhone 4 lifecycle. So iPod touch was a perfect device to help drive people to get used to that type of device. And to get them into the ecosystem so when the iPhone did make it to other carriers they would jump to iPhone from Andriod phone or other dumb phones.
Realistically at this point the iPod touch should die as well becuase it's purpose is mostly gone.

My opinion is trim iPods down to 2 lines, shuffle and nano. It kill both and create a small iPod with a screen that has larger storage.

The iPod touch has been in its 6th generation since September 2012. They never even bothered upgrading the touch to the same larger displays as the 6/6 Plus in 2014.

The classic should return though but I sorta agree with you on phasing out the touch. I'd like a high-capacity iPod that just plays my entire personal collection (and videos of course) without the extra and unnecessary baggage of Apple Music. I no longer consider iOS devices to be worthy iPod replacements the way they used to be with the current and awful music app.

Really at this point they could put a 128GB SD card in an iPod nano and call it good for large capacity with a huge cost increase or any.

Apple's marketing for the iPod Touch is that it's all about the 'fun' - games, music, videos, and web.
Of course, it's marketed at kids and teens until they get an iPhone (or Android).
I would at least hope that Apple releases an update that makes the ipcons look more iOS 9ish on the Nano as its UI looks out of date. Oh, and please bring back the square one. They could call it iPod Nano SE, and would sell millions.

I hope they never change the UI on the nano because it's a reminder of how much better Apple used to be at designing software before they stupidly let Jony Ive ruin the whole thing.

It strange reading this thread, thanks OP, as I've just started using my ipod mini blue 1st gen 4GB again.
I say again as I never really used it, I just kept using my trusted PJB-100 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_Jukebox modded 60GB and the mini stayed in a draw.
I liked having all my music on the PJB-100
The iPod mini though is just fantastic & I now use it in a Dension dock (20 pin) in my car all the time.
I have tried to get Rockbox working on El Cap W7 & W10 but failed for now.
I really treasure the little thing (that I was slightly embarrassed about spending the money on back in '04) & now want a 512GB flash, new battery and lossless when I feel confident.

I have found dusting off the mini quite exciting actually (I've got the iPhone, iPad rMBP SONOS).
I know the mod community is very active and I'm late to the party but I can see this area becoming more popular in the future, just as vinyl has again.
With people getting large flash drives and maybe re-ripping in lossless.
Lets face it apple sold so many iPods there will never be a shortage if 2nd hand ones at amazing prices.
Plus many folk still have their own tucked away somewhere.
As for a 'new' iPod, maybe make your own dream iPod to your exact specification!.

The iPod nano needs to evolve into a device for today, not the 2000's.
I understand if it doesn't have GPS given it's standing in the product line, but itt should have wi-fi capabilities at the very least.
With the advent of Apple Music and popularity of podcasts, tethering to update playlists and syncing is just so dated.

The last thing the nano needs is Apple Music, it's already bad enough on the iOS music app and iTunes on OS X.
