Yeah, that was during a time period when most people had low data caps and metered messaging and airtime.
Some people still have little data. For example I pay €14 for 1.5GB data, 0 minutes, 0 texts or €22 for 4GB data, 100 minutes, 0 texts which seems expensive for these days.

Some do still have low amounts of data, as you illustrate.

But my argument that the equation has flipped still stands.

For a little over two weeks you could get Unlimited Data on Sprint for $15.

Sprint still has a promo for a free year of data. You only pay the taxes.

There are plenty of prepaid carriers offering unlimited data for $30 or $40 a month.

If you don't use that much data, fine, that's great. Pay less for that.

But if you are in that category, is being able to download over 150mb over cellular really that important a thing to you? And if it's not, then why would Apple removing it have any affect on you or bother you in any way?

You consider those expensive, I consider that cheap. For example for 2GB my carrier charges $35 and then another required $20 for unlimited calls/text, so $55 per month minimum. However as @eyoungren stated if you have such little data allowance per month, you’re likely going to download app updates over WiFi anyway. If Apple made a toggle, you could leave it enabled so it wouldn’t force updates over your cell connection if you have little data.

Lol, India has some of the best carriers in the world.

The customer service is top notch. Par excellence. With Airtel. And decent with Jio. All others suck though.

Pricing is essentially throwaway.

You can get Unlimited calls and text with 25 GB 4G data for USD 4 per month including all taxes. And this is with post paid. Prepaid is even cheaper.

I was under the impression indian prices was worse or broadband was harder. Maybe it was somewhere else

It should not be up to Apple to decide if I can or cannot download something over LTE. I have no data caps so it should just be a setting that is on by default that you can turn off.

I swear, the whole App Store experience is built by incompetent people. Even in 2018 I get situations where an update refuses to download until I press update multiple times regardless if I am on WiFi or LTE. On Android updating apps has never been an issue for me.

America is not the entire world. Most places still have unlimited minutes and texts (useless) but limited data.

My suggestion, move to Android or raise the issue to Apple. They won’t hear you on here.

Cool ? I’ve had Android and like it but until they improve battery life I’m happy with my iPhone . It’s an issue but not a deal breaker.

Apple could easily include an option in the dialog box to allow users to bypass it on a case by case basis.

I would say make it something you have to go through a menu or two in the settings to change.

And then when you allow it have a popup that basically says, "This will use XXXX amount of data to update the app. Do you REALLY want to do this?"

That way, it would be hard to blame Apple for using your data to update large app's.

Broadband isn’t as good as LTE here.

For example, I pay USD 35ish per month for 3500ish GB Data at 40 Mbps with a static IP. There are other cheaper, less reliable and less available operators that even offer Unlimited Gigabit Internet for like USD 20ish per month. No FUP.

Seriously if the person wants to use their data to download a large app let them. It’s their decision not yours(Apple) to make

The question here is why is Facebook requiring more than 150MB for an app update? It is annoying how bloated these social media apps have become. Personally, I only use Facebook web on my iPhone (mainly because it's a battery eater).

Back to the actual topic, yes, the 150MB limit is ridiculous in 2018, especially considering in many regions, cellular connectivity is the only internet connectivity for some people.

Any app that uses custom UI elements generally tend to use more space because the assets need to be part of the build.

Even for an update? I thought Apple allows delta updates.

Yeah but the viability of a delta update depends on how the project is setup. Facebook, as a project, uses one of the most complex development environments out of all the apps on the AppStore. Doing a delta update is probably not a viable option for them.
