Do you have a similar experience with Apple News running heavily in the background on iOS 15?

yup issue is still happening consistently and strong. 6hours background usage for news app today. ios 15.1

Thanks for reporting. I was just thinking if the News app was fixed in the release and looks like it hasn't.

I deleted the app during the 15.1 betas when it started happening and looks like it's not coming back in my phone anytime soon.

Apple support says they are just waiting for the engineering team to find why this is occurring to fix in future update. they pulled enhanced logs from my device couple weeks ago. still no update from them.

I don't understand it. Despite having background refresh off for news, it consumes around 14-15 mins of background time per hour for me. Last 10 days I have 11 hours 33 mins on background (when I forgot to kill it). Annoying indeed.

Funny thing though, I got invited to take survey about Apple News the other day. My biggest gripe with the News app is that I'm paying for a subscription and the ads are worse than the actual news website. I find the way the ads are displayed in the articles is very un-Apple like.

Hopefully they're looking to improve it next year and of course, fix this damn background activity issue now.

I installed the iOS 15.2 RC this morning, after getting the high background usage and having it come back within a day after restarting the phone or deleting and reinstalling the News app. So far it hasn't happened since updating but will have to monitor it longer to be sure.

Just today my iPhone was at 100% charge at 8am. By 6pm it was at 10%. I looked at Screen Time: 1 hour 45 minutes of screen use. I looked at battery: 3.5 hours of News background activity. 90% battery use with less than 2 hours of actual use?!

Curious about this issue. After using News a good bit today I checked and saw it was responsible for 8% on my ipad on 15.2, but has been pretty much the same since the release of 15.0. Today it shows 10 minutes onscreen and 2 minutes background. That’s fairly standard for me, sometimes a little more, sometimes less. Background activity is almost always pretty minimal. I have most apps, including News, enabled for background refresh. No problem on either my phone or ipad. I did have an issue years ago with one app which was eventually corrected by them and my wife had an issue with the Facebook app a couple years ago but I haven’t heard her complain about that in quite a while, no complaints about News.

Wow really? It definitely fixed it for me - but I did start from it not being installed (I uninstalled it 15.1 and reinstalled 15.2) - no background usage here on either my 13PM or iPad Pro 11. Pretty happy!

You can go days without seeing it but then suddenly it will happen and you have to force restart your phone. You’ll likely run into it in the future by chance unfortunately.

Checking in two weeks later and the background app activity for News hasn't reoccurred on 15.2 (when it started happening for me on earlier versions, it'd come back within a day of restarting the phone, reinstalling the app, etc), so I'd say the issue's been fixed for me.

On the wider issue where a random app would start having a lot of standby background activity, I wouldn't be surprised if that remains unfixed, unfortunately, though it hasn't happened to me yet on 15.2. You'd think that problem happens enough that somebody would be onto it.

I think the News app has something to do with widgets/ suggestions. Never had Siri drain the battery before while on my 11 Pro but 13 Pro has a constant background drain. I even set it up from scratch to see if it’d fix things but it’s back in a few hours. Driving me nuts!
