Apple thinks of itself as a mobile device company. In January at the iPad launch event, Steve Jobs noted that “Apple is the largest mobile devices company in the world now.” And responding to a direct question today at a Goldman Sachs conference, liveblogged by the WSJ, COO Tim Cook reiterated: “Yes, you should definitely look at Apple as a mobile-device company.”

That is from 2010 - is today's WWDC a sign that Apple are going to focus on "gadgets" going forward? Is it likely that an updated iMac is just not a priority for them?

Focus on gadgets?
*confused*
Didn't they just release a whole bunch of new computers?

These threads are ridiculous. Just because Apple doesn't update every single item it manufactures on the same day does not mean they're discontinuing every product that wasn't updated today. There ARE, after all, other days that they can update other products.

They are focusing on the superficial.

If you want a computer to actually perform any sort of intensive work they haven't released anything for over a year. I don't class the Mac Pros as a new product.

Sorry, but I disagree.

I wanted an iMac to be released today too, but to say that none of the MBPs that have been released can do "any sort of intensive work" just isn't true.

I am moving from a three year old Core i7 machine running at 3.8Ghz. None of the new Macbook line will come close to it in performance.

If Apple isn't a computer company, what are they selling then ? Looking at their site, their 4 main lines of products are computers :

- Macs
- iPhones
- iPads
- iPods

Then there's all the computer accessories they sell, the computer networking equipment which are basically computers themselves (the AE, TC), the TV gizmo that's a computer you hook up to your TV...

What exactly makes Apple "not a computer company" when computers seem to be all they are selling right now ?

I think you're confused about what is a computer. Did you mean Apple seems to be exiting the "desktop PC/Workstation" market ?

Of course Apple is a computer company. Last time I checked, they'd just updated their computer product line and announced improvements in a new OS for it.

Apple is slowly turning into a multimedia company that makes computers.

Uh ? 90% of their revenu is based on computer hardware... How do you figure the "multi-media" part ? iTunes revenu is a small piece of the pie chart.

I said "slowly turning into", do you think they want to be a computer maker in 10 years? They want to over take Google, that is their end game.

And on what data are you basing this ? Seems to me they keep playing the computer game, introducing and updating "post pc" computers which is now their main revenu source. The "multimedia" eco-system is mostly a side biz, a value add for their core business of getting hardware into your hands.

It is on the side right now but you know Apple wants to own that market. They already have our credit card info, if they so this swipe to buy thing that will be a huge money maker for them. Like it or not the the personal computer is going away. I am not happy about it but that is the future. Apple wants simple and to get iPads into every kids and grandparents hands.

You have no idea what you're talking about with - 90% revenue coming from their Mac line.. The Macs accumulate for less than 15% of Apple's revenue in the last quarter. Apple makes more than 70% of it's profit from the sale of iPhone's and iPad's. A quick Google search on your part would confirm these numbers.

iTunes brings Apple almost the exact same amount of money as the Mac desktops do.

Many would argue that Apple is the world's most successful service design company. Apple's different lines of hardware are really just portals to larger ecosystems of paid content.
Apple wants to be a content provider and the iPad is the way to deliver it. This is why they are setting up pay walls for everything now.

I have no idea what I'm talking about ? I didn't say Macs, I said computers. You know, Macs/iPads/iPhones/iPods. Basically all the hardware they sell, which is all computers. ~90% of their revenue is off of hardware sales, which is basically all their lines of computers, be they traditionnal desktop/laptop PCs, tablet computers or smartphones.

----------

iPads are computers, they are personal. The personal computer is changing, it's not going away. Quite the contrary, it'll become more and more important to your daily life as it will replace things like your books, your magazines, your TV, your radio, etc..

Anyway, I'm guessing you have no actual basis in reality to claim Apple is "becoming a multi-media company". You're just inventing things here. Apple is in the computer business. This will be the case for quite a while based on their 90% revenue from actual computing hardware.

----------

For those who are interested:

So it's 18.4% + 13.6% + 55.1% + 4.4% + 2.0% or 93.5%. I was pretty close there with my 90% mark. Not bad for someone that "has no idea what he's talking about".

You can stop with the technicality now, clearly you know what we actually mean when we say "computers." Yes, the iPhone and iPad are computers, but not in the historic sense of the word, which is obviously how its being used in this context. Crusade for your modern interpretation of it elsewhere.

Ever since the iPhone was announced, I think we all knew this was going to happen. This world is changing, desktop and laptop computers are evolving and in a sense, disappearing. I, for one, don't like it. But I can't blame Apple for leading the pack either. I much prefer an actual, full-size stand alone "computer" compared to having some mobile device which syncs with a cloud. But that seems to be the way the wind is blowing these days.

Apple isn't the only one heading in this direction; at least they won't be soon if their competitors want to have a chance at survival.

Google is in a completely different business. Microsoft is in the business of selling software to businesses. Apple is in the business of selling hardware to consumers. Google is in the business of selling consumers to advertisers. Look who is making most profit right now.

Apple doesn't want to take over Google. They want to sell more hardware, and just like Google tries to interfere both with Microsoft's, Apple's, and recently with Facebook's business (Google apps, Android), you will see Apple interfering with Google's business (maps, Facebook co-operation), not to take over Google, but to make live tough for them.

Historic sense of the word ? In the historic sense of the word, the iPad is a computer. The modern Micro computer architecture known as desktops and laptops came very late unto the computing scene. There's nothing historic about it.

If you're using "computer" to define only desktop/laptops, you're not being historic, you're being ignorant of computing history.

My interpretation is the one that's actually historic, you're the one that's redefining the term. My definition of computer includes things like ENIAC all the way up to iPhones/iPads. Yours starts in the 70s or something, some 30 years after mine.

Please, don't try to give me history lessons here... You're basically using a modern interpretation of the word computer. I'm using the historic and original definition.
