Ive been having a lot of software issues with my X and apple said they would replace the unit. The only thing is I have the faintest hairline crack on the screen(cant see it straight on just a little at an angle). They want me to spend the 280$ to fix the glass before replacing the unit.
Has anybody else had replacement issues like this?

What does the software experience have to do with cosmetic damage? How did you accrue the crack in the first place? Applecare?

no AppleCare. The phone slid off my bed onto a thin rug. No damage to the frame just a super thin crack. But they told me they cant do anything without me replacing the glass.

Then the question is, is it worth the repair of $280 for you to fix the display if the software is unbearable. Or, do you decide to use the iPhone until you decide to upgrade at one point and perhaps sell it ‘as is’ if you decide to not complete the repair.

yes I know. I really wanted to upgrade this year as the phone is paid off but I'm not paying an additional 280$ for glass if I plan on getting another phone.
Just seeing if anyone has had an issue with apple replacing their phone similar situation. I was going to call and try speaking with a manager about this.

So you’re having software issues, have you tried any troubleshooting steps or have they helped you restore the iPhone in any manner?

Also, if you don’t agree with the repair fee, and if you are not able to resolve the software issues, then perhaps you could use the phone for little while longer until the new iPhones debut here shortly.

The only thing I can see Apple doing is perhaps giving you a discount of some sort, but the fact that the damage was caused by yourself and they Are asking the device be returned to them in operable condition for them to issue you a replacement device isn’t unreasonable.

Tell them you are fine with the crack and that you will smack the replacement on the table when youre there so it is the same as the one they are exchanging; seeing as the crack is nothing to do with the issues you are experiencing.

Pics?

If there’s no point of impact or spider spread it *could* be considered a manufacturing defect.

Another person (sorry OP) who chose not to get AppleCare +, and damaged their phone.

I have zero sympathy for people in these situations.

OP, you weighed up the risk and decided to go without AC+.

Now, you’ve got a damaged phone.

Time to stump up the cash, or live with it.

Alternatively, if it’s a software issue, try setting it up as a new phone.

I’m not asking for your sympathy. I’m asking for people with the same situation if Apple handled it the same way. If you want to just talk trash you can keep it to yourself.
Wouldn’t you think Apple agreed being a software issue and already took measures to fix it? The first two appointments they did all they could(which includes a fresh install) and said they want to replace the phone but can’t because of a crack in the display. So now I deal with issues with my phone because of a small crack.

No, You deal with the issues with the cracking your phone, because you chose not to take AppleCare plus.

It just sounds like you’re trying to blame Apple for this whole situation, when in fact it was your decision not to take AppleCare plus out that has lead you here.

I agree. The situation doesn’t make sense. My interpretation is that the OP cracked the display unintentionally, and is now upset that Apple is requesting a $280 charge because the OP wants alternatively to blame it on the software having ‘issues’ in order to achieve a replacement iPhone, but yet the OP is not even explaining what specific issues they are experiencing that others may be able to assist or help with. I side with Apple on this to have the damage repaired first or continue to use/sell the Phone as is. They (Apple) shouldn’t be held responsible to accept a phone that has a cracked display out of their control.

I’d ask for the manager in store to discuss this further. If the hairline crack has nothing to do with the software issues then it sounds like they are trying to get more money out of you. I’m sure if you keep your cool and go through the issues you’re having, they’ll replace it. Nobody expects a device that has been owned for nearly a year and used daily to be in pristine condition.

I’ve known people get iPhones replaced that are battered to hell and back lol.

That’s not an excuse. Phones don’t have to be in pristine condition, but Nor does Apple have to accept a cracked display either. That’s what AppleCare and cases are used for situations like these. The OP admitted the damage was caused by their own doing. I could make the counter argument that every iPhone I have owned has never been damaged or having a cracked display, but phones are not expected to be in pristine condition, but nor does Apple have to replace the phone with a cracked display either. Either repair the iPhone dispay or accept the responsibility for not having Applecare where the costs would not be substantially higher.

Or have your iPhone on your house insurance rather than buying a £119 ($153) AppleCare+ plan which you then have to pay a premium of £79 ($103) just to get a screen replaced.

It does feel as smartphone manufacturers make devices more fragile each year, they see it as an opportunity to sell a rather expensive insurance policy on top.

OP couldn’t you just save your data off the iPhone and get a replacement through your home insurer?

This is True. If you have some type of alternative insurance through a credit card or house insurance, other members have had their phones covered through that as well. I agree that smart phones are very fragile today because of the all glass design and the added weight, but that’s why AppleCare is so crucial sometimes with phone repairs like this and cases are always a plus.

I think a lot of people are unaware that they are already covered for things like this through home insurance and through their bank. There aren’t many home policies in the UK these days that don’t cover mobile phones within the general cover which I found interesting when renewing mine recently.

The problem with bank/home insurance policies when it comes to phones, is that they want to send it away for repair, so you’re potentially without it for a week or 2.

For me personally, AC+ wins hands down for the convenience factor of being able to get a same day repair/replacement.

You get what you pay for.

Obviously it depends on what you want and for you AppleCare works. I’d happily spend a few days using an old iPhone while mine is repaired and pay nothing, than pay £119 for AppleCare plus the £79 fee to replace a screen to be honest. I can get issues like that fast tracked through my insurer so it’s a quick turnaround anyway.

A friend of mine lost his Apple Watch S03 in Cornwall last weekend and had his new one arrive yesterday so it can be very quick to resolve.

AppleCare is a viable option for those that want it too and at the end of the day it’s an insurance policy like any other.
