OK, I was at the apple store last week and they offered the phone to me without a contract. I then called AT&T to ask and they say that just to start service with an iPhone, even if i bring my own, I need to sign a two year contract. so I think if i want, I can get an unlocked phone from the apple store... it's just that nobody will give me service in the USA without the two year contract.

Will someone try to buy one and insert a sim card?

You can get a no-contract plan with AT&T if you provide your own GSM phone. If your local AT&T will not do it, call AT&T corporate and let them know where this happened at.

what the point?your still stuck with AT&t officialy, and they wont discount the plan like tmobile does when you buy an unsubsidized phone.Tmobile lops of 20 bucks each month if you buy a phone full priced.every carrier should do this, or else whats the point of sellign an unlocked phone? The etf is the same price and you can pay that later..there really isnt a benefit to this..at least while its stuck to att.

How would buying a unlocked phone suit anyone in US? Its still only compatible with ATT 3G and not TMobile. The only reason for the need for an unlocked phone is that the 3G frequencies were compatible or the phone is going overseas.

Are there any phones that are compatible with both ATT & TMobile 3G frequencies?
