When I was in the USA in August, I was amazed to find how bad AT&T's network actually is. The rumors on that are true I'm sad to say.

I was affected but I didn't complain because I knew there was nothing to do about it, and I didn't return it because I otherwise love the phone. The problem with the antenna is a fact though, even if all other phones have their own antenna vulnerabilities.

It's just unfortunate that Apple's phone experiences signal loss when held in a way that people actually might hold it. When I need to use my right hand to write, I have to be careful about how I hold the phone in my left hand. That's a problem. Just not enough of one to get rid of my iPhone.

http://techcrunch.com/2010/07/16/an...returns-and-call-drops-are-all-extremely-low/

According to Jobs, 0.55% of all iPhone 4 users have called Apple Care to complain. Yes, one half of one percent.

I was affected but I didn't complain
That's the problem with Jobs using statistics (and LTD spouting the same stats) to minimize the overall impact to its customers. Plus that doesn't take into account the people who went to AT&T for resolution. Also does this ".55%" of people who called apple care also include customers who physically visited an apple store? I'd say probably not.

So while LTD is drinking the cool aid and trying to convince people that this is a non-problem, clearly too many apple customers were affected.

Fixed.

Fast forward 1-2 months later, it's as if the problem never existed. Demand continues to skyrocket and clearly, there weren't enough returns in the first place. Where is the flood of returns? How come demand continues to rise, in fact, so much so that Apple just can't keep up? And they only sell one or at most, two phones. What are these people dong with their gimped iPhones that drop calls left and right and can't maintain a signal? Are they putting them on their mantles above the fireplace?

The current situation clearly co-incides exactly with Jobs' statements. I know the disgruntled, the disaffected, the jealous, the out-of-touch geek contingent on MR loves to call old Jobsy a liar and other things that that for some reason involve morality of one kind or another, but this time the facts support his statements wholesale.

Drink the Kool-Aid, guys, and you can finally be right about something for once.

This is the kind of attitude that puts me off Apple users and Apple themselves.
What about them 10,000 people (at the very least) who have the problem? I suppose Apple do what they did with me and my broken iPod and try and convince users that there is actually no problem with their iPhones.

Apple has good support as long as customers have large wages.

That's because apple is becoming adept at ignoring the issues, in fact that has been their modus operandi for quite some time. They were denying an antenna problem all together until Consumer Reports came out with their scathing report.

You may think its not affecting enough customers but clearly the noise that was generated, causing apple to scramble to offer a hastily organized media event where Jobs kept telling us that he loves us, and offering free cases means that it has affected enough people, in fact it affected too many people.

The millions of cases Apple gave to it's iPhone 4 customers fixed the problem. Without the case, there is a problem.

The very fact that they had to give a case away is evidence enough that there was a wide spread problem and it was a design issue, since there is no other fix for existing phones.

Is there precedent for an October event?

A lot of rumors seem to be flying around...

  • 11" MacBook
  • MBA way overdue for an i3 update
  • 7" iPads
  • A post-September iPhone antenna fix suggest by Steve at the Antennagate Bumper special media event
  • iLife 11 appearing and then disappearing at Amazon

Anybody think that we're about to get yet another event? It just seems so unlikely given that we just had one on September 1st, but if there is any truth to the rumor that Apple plans to sell a boat-load of 11" laptops in 2010, then it does seem possible that El Jobso will be sending out invites any day.

Who's laughing now!!!
