Apple Owners: Do you always feel like you *need* to update to the newest products?

My friend bought an iPad 2 four/five months ago, and within our group of friends, all of us would always play with her iPad.

So, I brought in the discussion today if anyone in the table was going to purchase the new iPad. She got so defensive. She said "WHY? Why buy the new iPad? So what if it has a new resolution and better camera, that's it? Just buy the iPad 2 for -$100 off."

I think she felt that when someone in our group buys the new iPad, we would stop using hers and she would feel "out of style" with the old iPads.

I think this is true. Because I have a Blackberry and whenever they update, I never feel the need to get the new ones, and same with my friends. But I know if I had an iPhone I would feel like it's mandatory to get a new one. Even I always ask my friends "Is this the old iPhone? Why didn't you update it".

What do you guys think? Do you always update to the next one?

Still rocking my Late 2006 Core 2 Duo MacBook and I've got a few grand saved up and still won't replace it. Admittedly, it is getting long in the tooth, so I'm in the market for an Ivy Bridge refresh either in late 2012 or 2013. Not tied to Apple, either. I'll go with the best all around option for my needs.

Not quite. But i do update every two or so cycles. Resale value of Apple products are good enablers too.

For iPhones and iPads, the trend for me is to upgrade every 2 years.

For my Macs, however, I upgrade whenever my machine couldn't upgrade to the newest OS. Right now I have a early 2008 iMac. It can handle Mountain Lion, so it'll be good for another 1 1/2 years at least.

I have a 2009 Mini, a 2008 iPod Classic, and I just sold my Powerbook and got an early 2011 MBP. I sold my iPad 1 a couple of months ago because I got a great price on it. I don't really plan on buying another one.

Nope. I'm rocking an iPhone 4, I'm rocking a 2007 MBP, a 2010 Mac Mini, a 2006 first-gen intel Mac Pro...and a 2008 (first-gen) MBA.....and an iPad 2 plus one each of the Wifi-only and 3G versions of the first-gen iPad.

No. The only thing I do update every year is my iPhone. I sold my nearly two year old 15" MBP back in December and bought a 2010 MB to replace it with. I also have a 2008 black MB. These are my only computers. They will be fine for a few more years at least.

Have an early 2011 MacBook Pro - as a poor design student, it doesn't matter. I won't be able to afford a replacement for this computer even when I new one comes out.

I'm hoping that I can upgrade this aby to 16gbs of ram and a 2tb SSD costs ~$400 in 3-4 years so I can upgrade to that.

I'm more of a guy who wants the latest and greatest, but I usually don't want to spend the $$ to get it so I buy the model on the way out, or maybe a couple versions older to make sure I really like it before I spend the money on something new.

Financially that was less an issue for me when I purchased my iMac and MacBook Pro as their resale value is so good that used prices are were too close to the new ones that I took a leap of faith and purchased new. I'm feeling the same way about the Mac Minis I'm jonesing for. Buying used on ebay doesn't make sense when the price of a new one is so close.

The newest Apple product I own is a 6G nano that I got for Christmas in 2010. (And I didn't even have a desire to own one, my iPod photo from 2004 still worked just fine). My main machine is an eMac from 2005, and my phone is a Palm Centro from 2007. I don't feel the need for, nor do I like, having the latest and greatest. There's something to be said to still use and have use for older technology, instead of always running out to buy the newest updates.

Apple charge too much to be continually upgrading to the latest model. If their prices were more reasonable, then I probably still wouldn't. If it ain't broke, why fix it?

Pretty much the opposite. My school is mostly filled with new macs, and I just love macs, so I sort of know a bit about them. When I buy computers, I have usually a really low budget, and I look mostly along the really old Apple lines. I was so close to buying the eMate 300, and just experimenting to see if I could still make decent programs for it, but I decided not to after a while after seeing its programming use. Most people I know have an iPhone, iTouch, etc., and usually don't know much about computers, and tend to be sort of like that though. If you didn't have to jailbreak an iPad and void the warranty to download something from somewhere other than the App Store, I would definitely want that as my main thing. With the rising capabilities of iPads and their low cost compared to the others, they could be a good computer if I could download a traditional laptop OS (Possibly Linux) and then get a decent terminal emulator, since I do 50% of my stuff on there.

Sometimes I wish I had the newest products, but rarely do I upgrade. When my Computer can't handle the newest OS, I will then upgrade it. I'm almost due for a upgrade on my MacMini and MacBook because I'm sure Mountain Lion will be the last OS they can handle. I usually upgrade my iPhone whenever my contract is up. As for my iPad, I just got it in June, so I haven't had time to upgrade my iPad yet. I'm still rocking a 2009 MacMini and MacBook, iPhone 3Gs, & iPad 2.

I always say to myself " I will not watch the keynote and buy one" x10 ... I watch the keynote and I just get excited about it. The resale value of apple products is so amazing though. have ipad2 and it sold for $325 so $200 more for another ipad 3 is just worth it. So for me yes. I do get every update . BUT ONLY BECAUSE OF GOOD RESALE VALUE. if not it would be bi yearly update

I'm still on iPad 1 and iPhone 4, so no. If it does what I need it to, I see few reasons to upgrade.

I might be buying a new phone this year though, iPhone 5 or a Samsung of some sort, depending on which I like better.

Nope. If you have afew idevices and update them at separate intervals then there really is no need to have THE latest and greatest every generation.

Nope. I run them into the ground, or until I bring them to their knees by asking them to do too much. Like editing 500mb Photoshop files on a Mini with 1GB of RAM.

I even waited until the iPad 2 was announced so I could buy the iPad 1 on sale. I'll wait for iPad 4 (the Newer iPad?) to be announced before I even think about whether to get the New iPad.

But I appreciate the people who rush out and upgrade. By the time I get to using that model all the bugs have been worked out. Thanks!

Nope, still working on my Apple acquisitions slowly. Replaced a 2004 Dell with a MBP last August, bought an ipod Nano at Christmas and have just ordered an iPad 3rd gen. Next buy will be either an iMac or Mac Pro but then they will not be replaced until they have been run into the ground or die.

As long as they (PC's) can still run the software that I need them to run then I see no need to upgrade. If I need to run newer software e.g. games and the machines can't run it then it's time to upgrade. The 2004 Dell can still run MS Office 2007 and Google Chrome fine so that's being given to the mother-in-law as a 2nd PC to have downstairs. Saves her having to walk upstairs to use her main PC as she's like 78 lol.

I think too often we upgrade a product to be "in fashion" when the original product can still do its job admirably. Upgrading for silly reasons cost ourselves and our planet a small fortune but that's unlikely to change, after all it's in our nature sadly.
