Generally no, but recently I went through a reckless patch.

My iPad 2 and iPhone 4S purchases were "impulse" buys. I said I wasn't going to do it, but a few days before the iPad 2 was announced, my iPad 1 was on eBay. With the 4S I held out for a month then went for an expensive upgrade over my iPhone 4.

I didn't upgrade because of what people around me think though, I couldn't care less if someone has a newer/better gadget then me. I just spend waay to much time near a computer and so get caught up in the "hype" of it all :p

Since then, no. I'm pretty relieved that the "new iPad" bug hasn't bitten me.

Oh, that's iOS devices though. I would never dream of upgrading my Mac everytime there was a refresh. My MBP is almost 5 years old and going strong. I'm considering a new purchase later on this year because my needs are changing and I need a more capable machine.

On the contrary, all of my Apple products have outlived their usefulness. I only feel the need to upgrade when I have fallen significantly behind in technology and performance. Unfortunately these days that time becomes shorter between leaps in performance.

Mostly, the software that I must use dictates how long I can keep an old Apple toy or tool running before new hardware is required. For those with money to burn, I do not look down on them for needing the six month revision of a great product. But I do not feel that need myself.:)

I will only upgrade when it makes sense. If I can resell at a decent price, I might go for something newer. I will definitely resell my iPhone 4S when my contract expires and I am eligible for the next one.

I'm just happy to be able to use all Apple devices. It makes life a lot easier, regardless of whether they are the newest versions or not.

I do always feel like I need to rather than just want to. Wanting to really badly crosses into need when you sacrifice other necessities to get it.

You should have made this a poll.

No, I keep everything until it has outlived its usefulness. I also don't just go out and buy some new neat gadget. I always carefully consider whether it will improve my life by making it easier or help me out financially.

I bought the iPhone 3GS so I can get e-mail and get use to configuring smartphones with services like exchange and google apps. This allows me to get more clients. I didn't get Android or Blackberry since they have clumsy interfaces. Moreover since I was outlaying cash for a smartphone I figured it would be best to get one I'll get the most use out of. As the iPhone is compatible with iTunes it was a no brainer. I'll replace it when it no longer does the job.

Same goes with my late 06 MBP. It gives me maximum compatibility with clients. I will probably use it another three years.

I also keep key machines generations for compatibility with old games. Such as a PowerMac G4 for OS 9 gaming, an Athlon 64 and Radeon X800, &c.

I still have the Mac Pro 1,1. If Mountain Lion can't run on it, and they release a new Mac Pro this year, I may upgrade. But apart from that, it does everything I need and then some.

I agree with what some others have said. The reason I love Apple computers so much is Mac OS. I upgrade when it comes to getting the best OS. I can live with a few old parts.

Wanting.. that's another story :p

No. I'm too old for crap like peer pressure, fear of being out of style, and the like. Besides, "apple owner" didn't mean diddly-squat when I was a teenager. When I saw that word in the title, I thought this thread was about stocks.

Yes. I always want to upgrade.

I am a college student and have to buy my own stuff. So I can't spend money on a computer or phone all the time. So I'll wait until I get an upgrade before getting a new phone and wait until my laptop breaks. My last one got me through high school before I broke it, and I got my 2009 MBP on one of those auction sites (that's now defunct). Wouldn't have been able to afford it otherwise.

Plus, I love this thing. It's got character and has been through a lot.

I only update when they have something I love instantly.

I'm using my 2009 iPod Classic/nano 5g and Apple has had two chances to get me to upgrade but plain and simple, the 2009 iPods were the pinnacle IMO to date and nothing has appealed, and I'll keep using them until something I love more comes along, which may never happen if they kill the Classic and eliminate the click wheel altogether.

I'd still be using my original late-'08 unibody MBP if it hadn't been replaced with a late '10 MBP by AppleCare. I'm on that one now, and will be for the forseeable future. At $3k for a new laptop, it's something I tend not to do that often, and I have to load it up and love it when I do get it. Oddly enough, I think I like my old 2.8 GHz C2D CTO more than this late 2010 i7; I guess because I picked the former one and not the latter, even though the latter is the better machine. *shrug*

Still using my original 24" ACD from the redesign in '08. Even paid $200 to ship it overseas by boat from Japan to America last fall. Would've been nice to upgrade, but I figured $200 was cheaper than $1000 for a new 27"er, and mine is flawless with perfect quality control and no light bleeding, so I kept it and will for some time.

Kept my iPhone 3G until the 4S came out. Wanted the 4, but oh well. Aside from the 4S, Apple hasn't made anything at all that's appealed to me since the 2009 iPods, so I've bought nothing.

No.

I like seeing how old I can run my machines.

Still rocking my 2010 13 MBP and planning to for many years to come. Especially with Macs, I don't see why people upgrade after each revision. They lose money and only get a marginal upgrade most of the time. Then they have to waste time moving files / selling old computer ... just, why?

For iPhones, I think I'll upgrade whenever my contract permits. If I really wanted to, I could probably break even by selling my old iPhone.

I generally upgrade OSes, but I think I'll hold back from 10.8. Don't really need it (based on what I've seen from it so far).

My friend bought an iPad 2 four/five months ago, and within our group of friends, all of us would always play with her iPad.

So, I brought in the discussion today if anyone in the table was going to purchase the new iPad. She got so defensive. She said "WHY? Why buy the new iPad? So what if it has a new resolution and better camera, that's it? Just buy the iPad 2 for -$100 off."

I think she felt that when someone in our group buys the new iPad, we would stop using hers and she would feel "out of style" with the old iPads.

I think this is true. Because I have a Blackberry and whenever they update, I never feel the need to get the new ones, and same with my friends. But I know if I had an iPhone I would feel like it's mandatory to get a new one. Even I always ask my friends "Is this the old iPhone? Why didn't you update it".

What do you guys think? Do you always update to the next one?

To be a True Apple Fanboy. When Apple says "jump", you say, "how high".

I used to upgrade everything each time a new version came out. Now i just do it for iOS devices. Computer upgrades are so minor these days that it makes no sense going from, lets say, the newest iMac each year. its just minor speed bumps. who cares about 400Mhz difference when you are already at 2.8Ghz? But iPads and iPods are disposable Tech these days. you know a new one will come out a year later so for 12 months stick $20 in a shoebox each month for each iDevice you own and you will have enough to upgrade without financial hassle.

*Need* definitely not.
*Want* totally, but I don't.
However, with the New iPad, I might really fall for Apple's diabolic plot to make me buy one :D . Contrarily to what so many tech writers say, I think the third generation iPad is a HUGE leap forward and that it will push the iPad phenomenon to a whole new level.

Nope, I only upgrade when it's completely necessary for me, before I got my Blackbook in 08 I ran a Sawtooth G4 from 1999 to 2008. I'm ready for a new desktop, just waiting on whether or not there'll be a new Pro this year, if there is I'll grab an older one and sit on it for a while.

I neither want or need to; this applies to many things (cars, computers, etc). My stuff is working just the way it is.

I'm a "drive it until you have to scrape it off the pavement" kind of guy as well. That goes for cars, computers, appliances, and everything else. The only software I update every year is TurboTax. I'll update other programs only when they have a new feature I need.

On Windows, I used a graphics program called Micrografx Windows Draw 6 for 13 years. That was until I got my Windows 7 laptop that didn't support it anymore. I'm hoping I can run it on my Mac with CrossOver.
