Yup, this is legit kinda insane… I have a M2 ipad pro, I cant use the new pencil because why? it doesn’t have bluetooth? mm it does! …Could it be for marketing reasons? Could it be so I spend 2000$ on a new one..dingdingdingBINGO

This is how you loose marketshare, this is how you become adobe. When you are so horny for the dollar that you push away people that buy your products.. Due to pure greed.

Not cool apple, why should I buy your products when every advantage or new feature is locked behind a 2000$ pricetag? 130$ I MIGHT consider for the new features, but there is no way you can convince me that you need an M4 processor for a bluetooth pen to work.
How would you charge the Pencil Pro on your iPad Pro? They had to change the magnetic charging system to fit the camera in that area. The inductors don’t line up.

I've not bothered to go through 10 pages here but this only rings of one word.

Failure.
Yes.

A failure to understand a simple fact:

There is a Pencil available for EVERY iPad.

Or even simpler:

Every iPad has a Pencil designed for it.

Just like there is an iPad for different budgets.

And just like there are different iPads for different budgets (which have different features), so it goes for the Pencils that correspond with each iPad.

Greedy - that is the summation of the recent announcement, especially with regards to the pencil(s).

I am a staunch supporter of Apple and their technology, but Tim Cook as taken this 'restricted technology' to the extreme making us feel like we need to update our entire hardware to accommodate the features of a $129 pencil.

One word for Tim - LAME!

I am not going to do it - I just purchased a 11 inch iPad Pro with M2 and for some reason, the Pencil Pro won't work with this device. Maybe some code, maybe some hardware chip difference or maybe just some algorithm and case logic within the code that says my 1 month old iPad is too old!

Whatever the reason, to have FOUR pencils out, not only makes it confusing as heck, it also shows that the company isn't interested in making THE best product for us, just to target the widest swath of people to charge exorbitant amounts of money.

Well, this is one fanboy (who may have to turn in his fanboy card) who won't be upgrading my hardware to use this new pencil. can't justify it.

It's not some code or just a chip difference or even pure greed. In this model they moved the camera to the same side as the magnetic charger for the Pencil. They had to reconfigure the charger mounts to allow for that and they no longer match up to the older pencil. That older pencil cannot charge and connect sync itself to the new iPads.

I'm sorry but you may need to sell or give you older Pencil with your older iPad.

There are really only two current Pencils and there are only 3 current iPads with pencils. The Pencil Pro works with the Air and Pro and the USB-C pencil works with the base model iPad which does not have magnetic charging. (the Mini doesn't get a Pencil (yet?)). The other pencils are just accessories still available for the older iPads that Apple either no longer sells or will drop soon. It's not that complicated.

It's so funny because people see all these Pencils and just think Apple released them all at the same time.

Apple has release ONE Pencil for each gen, and has continued to manufacture them for the iPads they still keep around.

Imagine if you bought a car and suddenly the manufacturer decides to not make windshield wipers for it because they have a different windshield design on the new model. You need both wipers!!

"But but but, it's JUST a PENCIL!! The latest one should work with ALL iPads!!"

The stupidity is astounding, but I live in the US so it's not surprising.

I’ve seen less complicated charts for different car trims.

What an absolute joke of a product release. So the Pencil 2 isn’t compatible with the M4 Pro, and the Pencil Pro isn’t compatible with the M2 Pro, but IS compatible with the Air 2 and only M4 Pro? Give me a break. I don’t care if the magnets don’t line up, release a peripheral that charges all Pencil types, something like that has been long needed anyway instead of having to rely solely on the iPad’s edge.

Clown shoes.

Apologies to the writers and editors here, they’re just doing their job.

But the fact we’re having a debate about what the best stylus is instead of what the best new iPad is is to me a huge indictment on Tim Apple and his leadership of this company.

They’ve missed product deadlines, half-baked some products, poor software quality. But, if you don’t care about Apple’s customers and only care about shareholder $$$$, then I guess he’s a great CEO, right?

End rant.
We're NOT having a debate about the best stylus - this is just one article out of many discussing ALL the new releases. There are other articles discussing the new iPads so if you are not interested in the Pencil, don't visit the article specifically discussing it. Tim Cook is nothing to do with this and the Pencil team have no responsibility whatsoever for other priducts and software issues.

The usb c pencil shouldn't even exist,
Its good to have a less expensive Pecil for basic needs.
and the pencil 1 should be discontinued already.
It probably will be once they run out of stock.
The pencil 2 should also work on newer ipads.
Different pairing charging hardware to accommodate the much requested landscape camera.
God this is a mess.
Transitions usually are.

So, if you are getting a new iPad, it's simple
  1. if you are getting the low end iPad, get the Apple Pencil (USB-C, 2023)
  2. If you are getting the Air or the iPad Pro, get the Pencil Pro.
  3. If you are getting a mini, cry in your beer.
The other pencils are just to provide accessories for old iPads that are no longer sold.
Uhhh Apple still sells the iPad mini lol. Apple Pencil 2 is still the best choice for the mini until they refresh it to the 7th gen. They’ll stop selling the older Apple pencils once they refresh the mini and the 10th gen iPad.

But that doesn't work with the base iPad, which requires USB-C charging.

All that should exist is the Pencil (USB-C) and the Pencil Pro. And that is exactly the case going forward.

The only reason the old ones are hanging around is because they work with older iPads. They will be eventually be discontinued as stock runs out.
It won’t be until stock runs out, they will discontinue them when they refresh the iPad mini and base iPad. Right now they have to sell them because they still sell those iPads. After that iPad refresh it will be only the Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (dropping USB C from the name).

Transitions usually are.
Indeed, transitions are usually a mess, but what we are seeing here is permanent transition, so it gets frustrating.

One will not object about the fact the $20 protective cover of my iPhone will not be usable on the next model or would go to the trash if their iPhone unexpectedly dies. But we are talking about accessories around or above $100 here. This is an expensive permanent transition...

People with a Pencil 1 probably felt the same when the Pencil 2 was announced, but iPads supported that for 6 years.

It may not be complicated, but it’s clear they did it exclusively for money.

Nah, that one was easier to understand because the older ipads lacked the magnets to attach and magnetically charge the pencil 2. It was a much bigger change than from the pencil 2 to the new pencil pro.

No one wants to charge with usb c cable for a damn $20 difference. That usb c pencil was doa.
Different pairing charging hardware to accommodate the much requested landscape camera.
The usb c pencil works on both the new and older models. It's probably just a software lock to make people buy another pencil.

Did what for the money? Move the camera to the landscape side forcing the charging magnets to be moved? That was a sensible, and much welcome change. If the cost is that people buying a new iPad have to spend a little more for a new Pencil, I’m not going to cry over it.

The cost is that people with older ipad pros can’t use the new pencil. That will make many people ipad pro owners buy the new one even though their current one is still good. Do you really think Apple didn’t make their decision based on that? that would be rather naive.

How many people upgraded to an M2 Pro simply to get hover, which is also a Pencil software feature?

Probably not many.

Most people upgrade when they are getting an overall substantial improvement or have a specific need for a new feature. iPad users tend to keep their iPads for several years. Of course you will get a few people who want the latest thing and wil upgrade, many of them on these forums 😊, but that is a minority of customers.

Yeah. It would likely have been more profitable if the PP could have been used on previous iPads which is why I suspect there was a hardware reason, instead of Apple being nefarious, it couldn’t be used.
