I'm so happy my search came to an end years ago. I feel for those of you that are in transition. And in the end you'll do what I did, Lightroom.

In spite of:
I shoot Fuji, Adobe fails miserably in the demosiacing.
Which causes me to use an external converter to create dng files I bring into Lightroom.
I detest the subscription model.
I detested Adobe far before their subscription model.
Compared to Aperture the DAM (while the best out there) is not up to par.
Compared to Aperture the Develop module is way overrated.
LR's color module is a joke. Sorta important for a photographer.

Some will find a home in some niche product. But the great majority of you could save a lot of time and frustration by simply biting the bullet and adopt Lightroom. The only thing you have to learn is it's absurd import module. After that it's common sense if you've used any editing app.
I think that makes a lot of sense. When I got into photography I had a straight choice between LR and Aperture. Glad I chose LR.

Not sure what you mean by absurd import module though? I just insert my SD card, add a keyword or two and hit import.

Yeah, other than giving a bigger view of a file selected for import I recall Aperture being pretty the same as Lr for import. I still think both are rather meh at that stage, but I like to cull before import. And for that I prefer Fast Raw Viewer. It's what Lr should have built-in. Even Bridge. Or if you do a lot of metadata entry, Photo Mechanic. It has great ingestion tools. Just depends on your preferred workflow. And remember Adobe's u-turn on the "new" import module it had for a second?

For whatever reason, I kept getting duplicates in my library. It would default to Copy when all I wanted was to Add. For a newcomer, both abtuse terms. Don't recall how I finally learned but I'm fine with it now.

I use the no-brained approach now, move files to where I want them and Sync.

I'm just in the middle of a Lightroom classic free trial and I like it but I'm a bit "meh" about the interface. Think I prefer Apples tbh.

One thing that annoys me the most is that Adobe website & plans are so confusing! I signed up for photography plan at 9.98 a month which includes classic, CC & Photoshop + 20Gig of cloud storage. it seems a bargain if I get all that but I'd prefer just classic on its own at $5 a month as I won't use all other stuff.

Anyone recommend a good tutorial/course for it all? I've just been picking up things from various you tubers so far.. ive downloaded a load of presets and just been using them so far as all the controls scare me lol

It’s long but thorough. It is directed at organizing not editing though.
[doublepost=1538860522][/doublepost]And all you Capture one photographers, do you have to make a new layer for every application of the healing brush (based on location anyway)?

A good tutorial/course source for PS/LR and many, many, many other programs is Lynda.com There is a month to month membership fee. Not certain if initial free trial period. While I did subscribe for a while, discovered that local library had it as part of their online resource offerings and was free. Now I sign on through the local library web site May want to check with your local library to see if included.

I would debate maflynn’s claim about Lightroom. Go on set with most professional photographers and you will find that most will be using Capture One. I tried Lightroom but found it slow and did not have the features of Capture One. It’s one thing to post and opinion but his statement is laughable.

Serif has been going to release an Affinity Photo "soon" for years. If they do bother, it will likely have to be a DAM, like Bridge,.....one for all the file types of all their apps.....not something specifically for photography.
Really??? Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer (Adobe Illustrator competitor) HAVE been available for years. Technically, Affinity Photo is still on version 1 with no cost updates over the years (plural). They even developed a Windows version of Affinity Photo. Version 2, if ever released will have an upgrade charge...but at $50 for the program since day one, who cares! Perhaps you are confusing it with Affinity Publisher (Adobe InDesign competitor) which has been promised, delayed for years, but at least now you can download a beta version for free if want to use a desktop publishing program. It appears to be very feature rich.
[doublepost=1538956569][/doublepost]Thought I posted this earlier, but looking back, don't see it. This month is a milestone in what I call "Dump Adobe" experiment. Sure, I had months to try but procrastinated then September was my anniversary date which would lock me in for another year with Adobe and monthly cost go from $49.99 (full CC) to $52.99. I figure the worst that can happen is that I go back to PS/LR at $9.99, as I have replaced others. Premiere Pro - Final Cut Pro (Davinci Resolve 15 also looks good); Muse - Sparkle web design; InDesign - Quark Express (Gave up waiting for Affinity Publisher, but current beta does look good, and great competitive upgrade for Quark). That leaves PS/LR as the most frequently used program of all of them. For Lightroom - impressed with Capture One for Sony and seems to work well with my workflow. One thing I particularly like is Sessions organization that LR does not offer as both have (your choice with Capture One) catalog organization. The difference - Sessions is embedded within the photo folder and goes with it if moving the folder around, where catalog organization whines about not being able to find files if you move or delete them outside the catalog. Affinity Photo is more a Photoshop substitute and more robust than Capture One - particularly with multiple image layers and stacking. Also, while my version of Capture One is for Sony only, Affinity supports my non-Sony files, as well as .jpg from a scanner.

I never really used Apple's Aperture and very selective with photos - nothing client related and absolutely do not want RAW files taking up iCloud storage space. My Apple experience started with a IIc but then business took me to a windows environment. Returned to Apple when I needed a laptop and Windows 8 was released...which I promptly returned to Best Buy and got the MBP powerful enough to run FCPX. Reluctantly, I did put Parallels on it to support one financial program that had no Mac upgrades after v12 and they were up to v17. Even with Parallels, though I resisted returning to Paint Shop Pro which I used prior to switching to Photoshop. An excellent program - perhaps better than Affinity Photo - but is Windows only.

Thought I posted this earlier, but looking back, don't see it.

You know, unless I’m blind, I thought I replied to this thread as well, but I don’t see it. Oh well.

I’m by no means a pro, but I’ve been running an experiment of doing my edits only on Affinity on iPad Pro. My workflow is such that I’ll just process a picture here and there as time allows. I import with a card reader dongle and let Photos sync the RAW files, which I’ll export to my iMac and clean up when I have time. I just import the images I’ve processed back into Photos to keep my collection going and save on iCloud storage. I really like Affinity, as it seems to cover all my needs just fine. Certainly not saying this model would be a pro’s choice, but I’m getting used to the workflow after a couple months.
