well, if apple makes it it would be 1 inch thick and a bit more expensive. but i can see the market for it. just like the EEE.

woah, $479 with 16GB, 1GB ram, windows XP.

will be interesting to read the reviews. battery life, wifi reception, video playback, powerpoint playback and stuff. apple really needs to get their act together and offer a low price subnotebook.

i'm going to LA for the weekend and don't want to drag my 15"pb there. but that would be small enough to bring with me and cheap enough to risk it getting damaged/stolen at the beach.

Edit: Found it... I swear 2 minutes ago the only tabs were "Design" and "Tech Specs"...

This is the kind of thing people have wanted since 2004 and the creation of the 14" iBook. I still see people wanting a 10" or smaller MacBook, and they were all dissapointed with the MBA because Apple didn't make the computer smaller in the one place they wanted. 13" is still a bit large if you want to use the comptuer in a car, on a commuter train, or on a plane.

Then again, I'm looking for a larger laptop, maybe 19" with a fullsized keyboard (with numberpad).

The specs are anemic to say the least. The thing only has up to 1 GB of RAM and a 16GB HD. Meh.

A MacBook with similar specs would be lambasted.

At least it advertises it's Fisher-Priceness from the get go, unlike some aluminium-clad machines.

I was typing elsewhere about this, but I think netbooks - at least in their current guises - are a half-baked idea, but nevertheless one that many manufacturers feel compelled to leap on because people who don't know what they want will try to buy what is cheap (or what looks good, if they care about that).

I have apparently been volunteered to try one of these Fisher-Price lumps. I hope shortly to know many reasons why I wouldn't want to own one.

For a while I'm thinking Apple is missing the boat here. Everywhere around me in electronic stores and phone stores, I see small mini laptops with 9" screen for around $299 a $399. It seems to selling like hot cakes and very popular.

And why not! For only $300 you have a small cute device for internet etc.

When I see all those things happen around me I am thinking, apple missed the boat here and should be the first one who made the trend here. I hope Apple come in to this game soon and introduce a 9" mini laptop with the awesome Apple design.

I have to agree as well, 9" notebooks would be incredible, but if they're over $650, they have a very little chance of selling.

Apple doesn't strike me as the type of company that follows trends, especially when the marketplace is flooded with them.

again, I use my Asus eee PC quite a bit... I need to get my Powerbook 12" repaired but seriously I think that Dell has the best looking one, being based on their Studio series.

Apple is needing to fill this niche seriously. The 12" PB is getting hard to sneak around!

I agree that the new Dell device is ugly. The specs are fairly weak, making this not much more than a toy. I don't want to see Apple make one of these, but I would like to see Apple follow through with it's patent application:

I think a tablet macbook with an iMac docking station would be an awesome combo; and would be something that would be useful a home or on the go. :)

People have been wanting a 12" PB replacement forever. IMO, one of Apples largest blunders was to not replace it with a like Intel model. The MB no, the MBA no too. I can keep hoping but Apple seldom does what consumers ask for.

That's pretty thick for Apple. I can't see Apple doing that. If Apple releases a smaller laptop, it'll be thinner (MBA-like), which means less power for more price.

There is a possibility that Apple is purposely missing the boat. I can't see how Mac OS X and apps would work well on such a small display and low hardware specs. It could be that Apple will release a mini-tablet running the iPhone OS with additional (multi-tasking, edit, iLife, iWork) capabilities. The trick is to improve iPhone OS enough so that it delivers the features needed for a device much bigger than the iPhone.

On the other hand, Apple could be developing a "real" Mac OS X for small devices by further leveraging the optimizations of Snow Leopard. Feature removal would mean that high-end and complex apps may not work on that Mac OS X, but I don't think a mini-laptop is for those apps anyway. The trick is to not strip down Mac OS X so much that the iPhone OS would end up as the better choice.

I like the Dell's design. It is not as sleek and nice as Apple could do it, but it is a sign that PC laptops start to look better and better.
