uhmm, to take a screenshot of just a window in Windows its ALT+Print Screen

I know that, but on a mac, you can take a screen shot of just a small section (ie, if I just wanted to screen shot an icon, part of an error message, etc). On windows, you have to screen shot the window and then cut or crop out to only have the small content you wanted to display...

too all you who thought I was nuts....

this post is in reply to all the entries where people thought I had the placebo effect, imagining things, "had the LSD kicking in" Not sure about that comment, never did LSD.

Anyway.... My resolution DID improve (sorry the screen shots do not show the differences between apps well). And I googled this morning. Found this on LOOPRUMORS..... and I made sure to emphasize the part that backs me up.....

Apple releases Mac OS X 10.5.5.
Monday, September 15, 2008 at 09:51 PM | Posted by kazouz

Apple today released Mac OS X 10.5.5 after several developer seeds.

Some of the improvements that come with 10.5.5 include:

- Addresses stability issues with video playback, processor core idling, and remote disc sharing for MacBook Air.
- Addresses an issue in which some Macs could unexpectedly power on at the same time each day.
- Resolves a stability issue in TextEdit that could be found when accessing the color palette.
- Improves Spotlight indexing performance.
- Fixes an issue in which contacts might not sync properly with PalmOS-based devices.
- Improves iPhone sync reliability with iCal and Address Book.
- Includes improvements to Active Directory (see this article for more information).
- Improves Speech Dictionary.
- Fixes Kerberos authentication issues for Mac OS X 10.5 clients that connect to certain Samba servers, such as Mac OS X Server version 10.4.
- Includes extensive graphics enhancements.

The 10.5.5 Update is recommended for all users running Mac OS X Leopard and includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility and security of your Mac.

The update is available through Mac OS X Software Update and Apple’s downloads page. The company also released a new Mac OS X Security Update today.

not so, Windows can snip regions.

Go to Start -> Accessories -> Snipping Tool

Then rubber-band the area, and release MB1.

You've captured that area into a little editing window where you can highlight, draw, and then save as PNG, GIF, JPG or html.

MS Word issues could be related to...

Office 2008, so far specifically Word 2008, launches then crashes since 10.5.5 update! MS and :apple: need to work on this fix NOW!

This sounds like you may have a bad font issue.. Go to font book and validate your fonts and make sure none are corrupted. If they are remove them or turn them off. I have seen this before and 90% of the time it is font issue. Word 2008 loads great for me. :)

That doesn't mean your resolution has improved. There is no way that your screen has more pixels now. Your dock stretches the same amount of space unless you accidentally adjusted it, or the update adjusted your dock. You do not have any more screen real estate. There are graphics updates in EVERY update to OS X and they usually just mean your graphics card will be clocked up a bit higher and run a little cooler.

Ok, after a 2nd reboot, Office is working fine. I should have tried that first before my previous post.

Go to Start -> Accessories -> Snipping Tool

Then rubber-band the area, and release MB1.

YOu can also click :apple:(cmmd)-shift-4. This will turn your cursor into a cross hair like symbol. Then click and drag around the area you want to capture and release... WALA~! YOu should now have a picture on your desktop. ENJOY! :)

I guess you didn't understand the part about Start and Accessories. He's talking about Windows.

I'm fairly certain it's just you. This release was extensively tested, and I'm in word 2008 just fine :)

I just finished installing this on my MacBook Pro with no issues, everything is working fine. I'm going to try Front Row and see if it still shows NVChannel(GL) software errors in the Console with these new drivers.

EDIT: Just played with Front Row and it didn't even hiccup, whereas before it would freeze after 5 minutes with songs which have long titles. Hallelujah! Thanks, Apple!

Anyone having issues with WiFi connection? After I updated Safari seems to run slower and internet pages are being fed up slower than just before the update. Likewise, my connection to devices (time capsule) locally also seem to lag...

AWESOME!! I can actual use my 2nd monitor on my iMac. Before 10.5.5 the colors were very washed out and the text was impossible to read. After trying the calibration that I attempted multiple times before, the monitor looks great!

G5 Issue

Hey,

Both my MacBook Pro and Mac Mini worked fine. However my G5 froze while shutting down. I had to do a hard reset (hold the power down) restart and go through Software Updater again. This time the dock would not quit on restart so I had to force it through Activity Monitor and then it all worked.

Guess us PowerPC users really are the bottom of the pile now.

The 10.5.5 upgrade for OS X Server fixes the dastardly Potential VM Growth issue! DirectoryService feels a lot faster in general, and top shows it using overall a lot less CPU time since I updated. Also a lot of Active Directory fixes included. I guess the boys at Apple really beat at that sucker. Excellent!

Also, I did notice my aging laptop (powerbook G4) seems to be somewhat snappier. I'm wondering if its at all a result of the graphics changes.

Anyway, 10.5.5 seems like a fine point release. Thank you, :apple:!

My dual G5 PowerMac installed and shut down fine. I noticed it did seem to reboot once in the middle of the following restart, but I think that may've been intended by Apple. I didn't notice that on my G4 laptop, though.

gues you're talking about Vista. Can't find that on my XP work machine

You guys keep raining on my parade and like everyone else on this forum, with every update people have different experiences (good and bad). I also read some posts where they said their resolution improved. so :p!!! I am just gonna end this conversation and now I have an article to back up my claims on graphics enhancements. Albiet I bought my mac from macmall pre-configured, so maybe they tweaked my graphics settings and now this update un-tweaked it; giving me a better resolution. Dunno. all I can say is it looks a lot better to me, and I can now see the difference in displays between QT and VLC. Also, dunno if it is my eyes or what, but the brushed aluminum on the windows appears to change shades slightly depending on the different background in the window. I did not see that before the update. and It looks like the overall clarity in all the apps improved.

So, take it for what you want. I just think mine looks better.

END OF CONVERSATION.

Pocketmac won't find my device anymore

Pocketmac won't find my device anymore (a HTC smartphone), despite re-installing, reconnecting etc. This has only manifested itself since the 10.5.5. (Combo) update.

Is anyone else having a problem?

BW

Richard

Thanks, like I said. I wish I would have known that, so that I could post the before and after. But here is my clarity. It was not this nice before. Also here is the side-by-side of the VLC vs QT

My best guess would be that maybe the update fiddled with your colour settings or something. Or else it's the placebo effect. Having said this, your eyes are clearly better than mine; look at your dock! How can you see anything on there? You are clearly half man half eagle.:p

is it just me, or are apps opening way faster since 10.5.5? iTunes, Aperture, iCal, Safari....everything seems a bit faster.

this release has definitely made Leopard faster overall on my MBP. programs load much faster from a cold start. that is a great thing.:D
