So a quick scan of the AppleBeta channel on Reddit shows that Apple accidentally pushed the beta firmware to APP2’s last week, but certain functionality (ie hearing aid) will only be activated if running 18.1.

Poorly structured article title.

Apple Releases New AirPods Pro

then the rest on the next line. The word firmware should be much earlier in the title.
Agreed. Also, what constitutes "older" as the APP2 have also been around for a while, the article should have made it clear that APP2 aren't affected (even if they weren't really listed) or should have differentiated APP1, as they did with the AP models listed.

Maybe someday they'll fix the "disappearing Adaptive Audio" bug. A few times a week, I squeeze the stem of my APP 2 to cycle through the three audio modes I use (Transparency, Adaptive, full ANC) and it just refuses to go to Adaptive until I go into the AirPods Pro settings on my phone and manually enable that shortcut again. Happens on my Macs and iPhone.

Totally, tuned them to a standstill since mid September. It's why I am looking forward to every update in case it reverts back to when they worked as designed.

Don’t quite understand. My APP2 USB-C are currently running version 7A305. How can a lower-named version constitute an upgrade?

I think y’all are stressing out too much about a firmware update that happens automatically in the background, without notice. I know we are excited about the new hearing aids we will all own soon but let’s maintain some composure.
A lot of us here have found ACN to not work as well, adaptive and transparency becoming virtually identical, highs being overly shrill, and mid bass suddenly too strong. There have been long threads since September (when the update madness started) about these issues/ features. So I for one hope that a new update fixes the broken improvements introduced since then, with the next update.

It's not for APP2. The article should have been clearer. There is however the newer 7B13d you can update to.

From what I can tell MacRumors missed the announcement for that one.
There's been so many, and equally as many announcements and long threads about functionality issues. So yup, odd that there was nothing about 7B13d but rather this unclear article about firmware on the older models.

Aside from those issues you mention, I also find the highs to have become overly shrill and mid bass way to strong. I'm sure I possibly have mentioned this already multiple times on the other firmware "improvement" articles we've had of late. :)

Those are probably getting new firmware next week to go with iOS 18.1, turning on hearing aid support.
Yup probably, and I believe either way limited to the US for now as been suggested on here. I'm on iOS17.7 and likely will be sticking to it also, unless I upgrade to MacOS 15.

What's holding you back from upgrading, if I may ask?

Indeed "Firmware update released for last gen or older AirPods (Standard, Pro and Max)" would be much better.

Or "AirPods firmware release for last gen or older (standard, Pro and Max)"

Looked online and 7A305 is latest and best for MagSafe or USB-C APP2. That makes me think that 7B13d must be a Beta release, no? I am not on their Beta program, if you will.

It is the beta of last week, this update is for the Gen 1, sadly the title is so wrong typed.

Absolutely and it's a very good question, the answer (or concern) has a few facets. I'll keep it brief but will likely fail:

iOS: I own a 13 Mini, currently on iOS 17.7 but was the phone was originally released with iOS 15. My phone prior was the OG 5SE from 2016, so obviously I keep my devices for quite a while (6 yrs in this case) and a 2009er MBP for 13 yrs that I occasionally still use. 5 yrs into the iP ownership, I had Apple replace the battery, but with so many iOS gen updates it just become unusable in the end in terms of holding charge. So I'm quite apprehensive about moving to iOS 18. The only advantage for me would be ability to mirror to my MBP from the 13 Min. Other features I'm really not that interested in.

MacOS: I own a 2023 M2 MBP Max, quite a capable machine that's currently on MacOS 14.7. I'm a hobby photog that has been using Capture One for many years with RAW capture, buying single user licenses along the journey, the latest was their 2023 version. Unfortunately they went for a very pricey subscription model after this and aggressively limited support for new camera models and also MacOS support, only very recently stating that Sequoia should function mostly with their latest release of their software. It's still unclear if that will be the case with my "ancient" 2023 purchase. I'm therefore waiting for community support first to answer this question before upgrading.

As mentioned, Capture One software has become extremely greedy and has limited support so extremely, to aggressively push folks to their subscription model. Oh I do miss Aperture. IF I can confirm that my purchased license will work well with MacOS 15, I will update to Sequoia. This is my primary concern. IF this is successful then I likely will update to iOS 18, but (for me) only for the mirroring function. And as I'm writing this, I'm not even entirely convinced that I will make much use of it.

So that's me in a nutshell at the moment. :)

Neither am I, or have ever been a beta tester. 7B13d by the sound of it was released quietly not so long ago and sneaked itself quite easily into the usually, rather stringent criteria of firmware updates even occurring. I don't use my APP2 very often and usually have to make sure all conditions are met for updates to occur but this one seems to have been pushed onto the device quite easily. 🤷‍♂️ It's weird all right.

I wondered if they would update the original AirPods Pro... mine still have the static TV screen noise every time I open them and put them in my ears for a few seconds. Hopefully, it will fix that issue.
