@JPack is absolutely correct. If they tear the adhesive strips they automatically stop and replace the phone no exceptions. They reassemble the phone and have you delete all data but I guarantee if the phone wouldn’t power up, you would of never seen the old phone and they would of handed you the new one and wished you a pleasant day.
This (or very similar to it) happened with my OOW iPhone X back in November 2018--I took it in to have the battery replaced (it expanded), they tried to replace it but subsequently told me that they had to give me a replacement (refurb) phone due to tearing the adhesive (or something like that--I don't remember the specifics TBH); they handed me my old phone and told me to wipe the phone (while they watched) before handing me the refurb replacement. $29 (the cost for an OOW iPhone X battery replacement) for a refurbed iPhone X, not bad IMHO.

there are adhesive tabs that hold the battery in place when removing those if they break and the Tech can't reach them they will replace the battery its a safety issue for the Techs

I have a 7 and it went in for screen repair. Battery is at 85% and they went out of their way discouraging a battery replacement. But they did replace the screen and broke the phone speaker in the process. Phone no longer works any more. Did I get a new replacement for their blunder? Nope. Just got a bill for the new screen. Before they even considered a repair, they pushed hard for me to buy a new iPhone or a new 7. iPhone 7 of certain models is a time bomb and they don't want to crack open the case. My experience illustrates why- Stuff breaks

I’m guessing they broke the battery adhesive tabs and that the health & policy won’t let them pry the lithium ion battery out.

After the whole Galaxy Note debacle people really overrate the risk of then exploding. I’ve personally completely mangled a few when changing batteries myself and they’ve been fine.

I have a 7 and an 8. I sure wouldn't ever buy a 7 again regardless of the price. Good thing they discontinued it

What you’ve described is exactly what happened when I went to get my iPhone SE battery replaced.

The store advisor said they couldn’t replace it without bricking the phone so for the cost of the replacement I can have a new one.

May have been a like new refurb but still works great.

How does iPhone 7/7 Plus hold up?
Apart from the battery mine was still going strong after 3 years. Still fast and reliable. The only thing I notice now in comparison with the new one is that that the speaker wasn't very strong anymore - I sometimes had difficulties hearing the other person. Maybe a buildup of dust inside?

Other than that I have the impression that the screen of the replacement is better, more vibrant colours.

That sounds like a strange shop. Where was this?
