That would depend on if his original delivery date sticks. IIRC, you only have the 14 day window to return it to the store. If his delivery date is past that window, he's stuck. If delivery dates are slipping to around August, there's no way one would want to be stuck with a base model they can't return.

Then return it within 14 days.

Ok Team - so now I am more upset at Apple for their shipping policy and the way they are acting than the actual delay on my macbook pro!
So I have MBP 14” 24gpu 1TB ssd and 64gb ram ordered 3rd February 2022. Originally it was due to be delivered in April - now its June.

I have been saying on Apple official forums that I thought that the “processing” for months on their shipping was bad policy - in the current state of things I said I wanted a counter to show me how many machines needed to be built before mine. (Apple having state of the art facilities and processes this would be a no brained) - everyone on the forum said no apple doesnt do this, what a dumb idea. I just thought that it would help me to see the number getting smaller every day.

Then I found this https://99percentinvisible.org/episode/wait-wait-tell-me/ which is a 99% invisible podcast about the science of waiting…. And guess what? Apple knows about this already! They were one of the pioneer companies to research and develop loading screens and progress bars for their software and hardware to get around customers complaining that the wait times were too long. But when I try to point this out on Apple forums they keep deleting my posts!!!!!!!!!!

I am more angry about this than the delays! Come on apple get yourself a shipping progress bar that actually moves!
Thanks team I hope macrumours doesn’t remove this post!
Hang in there everyone
Sounds like a baby crying! Bottom line is you get the pacifier when it arrives. I'm not defending Apple, but they have little control over covid related delays in manufacturing and shipping. I haven't seen any cargo ships and planes with the Apple logo on them. I seriously doubt Apple even has a firm idea of when orders will ship and be delivered from thousands of miles away during a pandemic that won't go away. So get a diaper change and chill out...

You've been waiting a few months for a new computer big deal. I've been waiting over 8 years for my iMac to die so I can upgrade but it just won't die!!!!

I don’t know why everyone is not more angry in this thread. Apple is obviously targeting them, and think we are a sucker that will just calmly wait for a new Mac. Well Apple is dead-wrong! We are on to them! There is no delay, it’s purely malicious actions from Apple and we won’t be quiet until we get our laptops!!!!

Agreed. At this point, anyone with BTO orders needs to just chill and be patient.

9-11 weeks is better than 11 - 13 weeks, right?

You're effectively giving the starving person a cracker, then take it back when they have eaten half of it, telling them to wait weeks later to get more.

That is not a good investment for any consumer to have something, give it back, have nothing for the data that they've accumulated on that Mac that they are returning, and wait another 2-3 months to get what they've ordered. You are also assuming that they have the money to buy 2 machines then give back one while waiting for the other, and still have nothing to show for the time they are waiting. If they are going to do something like that, it would be better for them to wait altogether until October for the next iteration of Macs to be announced and launched. He's already bought a Mac; buy another Mac to hold you over, knowing full well that you'll have to give it back to get a refund of the cost of that Mac because the return window is sooner than the delivery date of the first Mac and waiting longer for the first Mac to arrive (plus losing any personal data that may have been on the first Mac, hoping that data gets wiped, and adding yet another Mac to the refurb store) is not a good idea at all.

Plus, that idea doesn't lower or expedite his original delivery date, and having a Mac for 2 weeks is no consolation, especially when it has to be given up again.
