When the iPhone came out it was truly revolutionary. Steve Jobs should be forever commended for what he has done to the cell phone industry, bringing in software updates, applications, and more control over hardware.

However..

I don't know what happen this time. The iPad will be a huge hit with the older generation looking for an easy to use product to get their daily news, but what about me? A more power - geeky user.

Apple, go back to the drawing board on this one for revision 2.

IE Look at this.

The video demonstrates how much Adobe has worked with HP on customizing the software to utilize hardware acceleration on a SLATE?!? .. crazy.

Too bad Apple, next time.

"Apple shortsightedness on this product cost a potential customer."

And on the other hand they will gain about millions others.

Apple doesn't make products just for you.

unfortunately not every product released is geared towards you. It's possible that Apple may release a product that is meant for a different type of consumer..... If it's not for you then just move on. It's impossible to make a product which caters to all level and all types of users, and consumers.

Love the HP or hate it (same for iPad) - this video is great marketing and slam against Apple for limited the browser experience. Which I would expect nothing less from a company that was hit hard by Jobs' comments lately.

Devices and companies aside - great marketing and messaging in the video

Sure the HP slate might run Flash/Silverlight, but any word on battery life while streaming Netflix/Hulu?
If the battery life is great, how is the thickness and weight?

Apple PEDs (Person Entertainment Devices. i.e. iphone, ipod, etc.) or media products have really never been about the power user. They have always focused these products to be user friendly so they can cater to the widest range of customers.

Assuming the iPad app store grows to be as robust as the iPhone's, nearly every aspect of the iPad makes perfect business sense. Of all the tablet devices we've seen so far, it has the strongest chance of becoming a mass market success.

I think few people will find value in the HP Slate. Running Windows 7 (even a touch optimized version) is a bad idea, since the majority of content consumed on the device will be designed around the desktop, keyboard, and mouse. Quite simply, this touch based device will be a more cumbersome way to interact with the software running on it, so ultimately what's the point, aside from novelty?

The iPad's main strength as a product is that it doesn't try to compete with Laptops and Desktops. It is its own product. Loads of software will be designed with the touch interface in mind. Hopefully, like the iPhone, many of these apps will fulfill particular users' needs in a way they can't be satisfied on a laptop or desktop machine. I don't see a similar ecosystem developing on the Slate, which will run old software but with no real advantages over the desktop machines they were designed for.

Because of your short-sightedness you don't realize that the product is not designed for you and Apple probably doesn't care you're not happy.

You're the exception, not the rule. Sorry for you. There are plenty of tablets that will get you the power you crave.

I can't watch MTV on my iPad? Oh my god. What will I do. No Spongebob games? Oh the humanity. :)

Apple has already changed things with the iPad. I present the video you posted and HP's state as exhibit A & B. Like the iPad or not, competitors are scrambling to make something similar. That is nothing but good for the Apple fanboys and the haters. The competition should help the products get better.

This is basically the same things people said when the Wii came out. Should be noted that Nintendo went from #3 with the GameCube to #1 with the Wii, in terms of consoles sold.

It's a carrot dangling exercise. The functional stuff that many users want will come in time to the iPad, just as they have to the iPhone. No point giving you everything now, Apple know the iPad will sell even it only had a looped video of Steve Balmer jumping around on stage, screaming. Drag it out, get more sales.

HP slate pwns the iPad. Honestly I have no interest in the iPad any more. The iPad has no innovation in it at all. Cmon Apple, just blow up an iPod touch to giant size and think people will buy it? I think Apple can do better.

Just to play devil's advocate, how is Apple's idea of "blowing up the iPod touch to giant size" and thinking people will buy it any different than HP shrinking the size of a laptop, removing the keyboard and thinking people will buy it any different? Other than one of those two thoughts has existed for many years yet never really found success.

Yea the Slate is pretty amazing. I was originally all hyped up to buy an iPad but the Slate really took the wind out of iPads sails for me. Was originally going to get iPad even with it's shortcomings just because there was nothing else like it out there but now I want a Slate :D I will probably still get an iPad to tide me over until the Slate is released though.

I don't see the iPad being a huge hit with the older population at all, more like with the younger population.

...would be on a real computer and wouldn't care about the iPad in the slightest.

For real.

I can't picture anyone who needs to print PDF or email attatchments on an hourly basis or run heavy CPU-intensive programs on a daily basis while on the go using this. If they need to do that kind of stuff, they'll have a laptop.

Most people I know have laptops that they take with them to pull out and browse facebook or myspace or send/read emails to friends and family. This will take care of that just fine.

Oh, you'll buy one anyway, and you know it. :)

The iPad isn't perfect, but it's by design. It's not like people at Apple spent 18 months on a product and forget to add obvious stuff. It's a calculated decision. Part I'm sure is to keep the price low and also fit within desired specs. And certainly it's a part of the roadmap to version 2.0.

Honestly I think we're seeing the sun set on the golden age of the desktop OS. We'll still buy "computers" but a lot fewer of them and a lot more of these app-based platforms. It will be silly to spend so much money buying over-powered computers to do the mundane tasks that occupy most of our needs.

Honestly, maybe I am an Apple Fanboy lol, but that HP Slate software looks like **** pardon my language. I hate it, and can't wait to get my hands on a 3G iPad.

Who knows? No point in discussing it until these things are out and we can see some reviews or hold them in stores. Right now, the Slate has me sold but if it runs windows slow as a dog then I am prepared to call it a turd.

I would never get the hp slate not because it is not good. Because it not anything new. We have seen tablets with desktop os on them and they suck. what makes you think the hp slate will be better then the archos 9?

I've never understood statements to this effect.

How can a computer be over-powered? "So much money"... How much do you think compters cost these days?

You can get this Dell Inspiron 560 with a 2.7 GHZ Core 2 Duo pocessor, 2 gigs of ram, and a monitor for $500. That's easily "over-powered" for doing mundane tasks that a basic user will do with this computer. It's one of their cheapest machines.
