Apple cash reserves... $216 Billion
Nintendo current market cap... $56 Billion

Discontinue the Switch... Make nice joy-cons for iPads... Move ALL their games into the App Store.... and your joy-cons also can play your games on your Apple TV and even your Mac.

HOW would that not be a perfect situation for them?

Microsoft is already trying to merge the XBox and PC gaming experience.... same controller, and buying a game on one gives you access on the other.

Then Google can buy Playstation from Sony and we've got a new level of tech once they all start launching their own AR and VR hardware.....

If Apple wanted to get into the gaming industry, they would. We don’t have to swallow up good companies just to compete.

The value of Nintendo is their content. All the Mario games going back to the 80's.... Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Zelda... having their entire library in the App Store.

They are working on bringing their future library to the store anyway. We already have Super Mario, Fire Emblem and Animal Crossing. Mario Kart is coming next year.

Super Mario "Run" is hardly Super Mario Odyssey.

And you could have all the old games too. Who wouldn't want to load up Mario 64 on an iPad.

Nintendo has a strong headed culture of their own, maybe even more so than Apple, who at least have the benefit of being in free wheeling Silicon Valley. Also such a buyout would have to be approved by the Japanese government, which typically leans on intra-Japan mergers or encourages Japanese companies to buy non-Japanese assets and not the other way around.

Apple already has one of the most popular gaming platforms on the planet. Mobile gaming sales saw about the same sales revenue as consoles in 2017, and expected to overtake consoles in 2018. Apple doesn't need to buy Nintendo, and I see no benefit to either company if they did. As somebody already mentioned, Nintendo games are already on the mobile platform.

Google search turned up this, not sure of the accuracy, but there you go:
https://newzoo.com/insights/article...-108-9-billion-in-2017-with-mobile-taking-42/

PS. For the record, I can't stand mobile games. I'm a console gamer for life baby!

Good god no. We'd be playing watered down versions of Zelda/Mario and with controllers that look like AppleTV remotes and rely on swiping gestures... and that's if we're lucky enough to even be able to use controllers over touch screen controls. No thanks.

Let's also not forget that Nintendo doesn't need to be bought. They have tons of cash in the bank with plenty of followers who have no trouble paying for their hardware. Just buy Nintendo hardware if you want to play their games.

Who wouldn't want to load up Mario 64 on an iPad.

Me. That sounds terrible. The best way to experience that game, along with just about all the other good N64 games, is on a tube TV and with a real N64 controller.

They are working on bringing their future library to the store anyway. We already have Super Mario, Fire Emblem and Animal Crossing. Mario Kart is coming next year.

and they all suck compared to the real things.

45 years of gaming behind me - touchscreen controls suck big time for anything requiring even a small level of accuracy and now I have a switch I haven’t played an iOS game in 6 months. Apple have never been bothered by gaming so why start now with mobile ? In regards to MS that merger won’t help in their huge loss this gen against Sony. Where are all the pundits now (quite a few on This forum I remember) saying that mobile console gaming was dead ?

I'm not talking about any touch screen controls.... I agree that's an awful experience.

I'm talking a "joy-con" type adapter like the Switch has.... or even replicated NES, SNES, N64, etc controllers that connect via Bluetooth.

No after market accessory has ever been successful in gaming. Every switch game is completely compatible with its host hardware / controls but Apple can’t even sort out its own games with MFI controllers after several years of half hearted attempts. Why are there no decent games on my Apple TV ?

How absurd. Competition is wonderful for consumers. Merging companies... buyouts.... it’s the fever dream of fanboys.

Once upon a time it would have made sense for Nintendo to sell up but then the Wii happened, the DS, now the Switch all performed/perfoming incredible in the market. Remember Nintendo make a profit on their hardware sold. They retain all profits from sales as they own the product, why would they sell up I ask you?

What these boil down to are Apple fanboys that want to play Nintendo games. Well guess what? You can do this already! All you need to do is buy an iPhone and a Switch! It’s incredibly easy.... I do it!

Let’s talk about Apple a bit. Their gaming bit is a joke. On Nintendo systems you buy a game intended for that platform and it works. I’ve had countless games stop working because Apple don’t support legacy APIs or frameworks. For that reason alone I don’t put any money into iOS and why I have maybe 100 games on my Switch.

What you want is Apple to improve their platform. That’s the better solution in all of this. And if you want to play Nintendo games then go buy a Nintendo console. And you should because it’s an incredible platform that I’ve spent way too much money on lol. Before this yes I used to play console games but nowhere near this much. Since owning a 3DS on launch date the most I’ve put into a game was 300 hours on Animal Crossing 2013. Since owning a switch on launch day I’ve put 350 hours into Zelda and it’s not even a year old lol. Digital crack!

I hear ya. I bought some 8BitDo controllers for my PC and NES/SNES Minis and thought hey let’s try them out on iOS. What a poor system.... it works with some games but not all? And comments in reviews even mention that games work with some controllers but not all. Pathetic. It’s so scattered that you simply have to cross your fingers and pray that games will work as the bar is so low these days.

Oh my god can you imagine how cumbersome that would be. No thanks!

I’ve got a question for the Apple fanboys: instead of Apple buying Nintendo what do you think of Apple licensing out iOS to them? Why does it never work that way eh. It’s always “Apple should buy everyone” I find.

One day the switch will die and those 100 games aren't playable anymore. I've been a gamer since the 16-bit era. Who cares about those old games. They were fun and bring back nostalgia, but they suck when you look at them now. There are so many good games out, that you shouldn't be bothered replaying old games.

I've bought games that don't work anymore in iOS11, so what? I've had my fun with them and that's that. All the PS1-games that got scratched back in the days were a loss too, should that have stopped me of buying games that come on discs?

Where to start really ? All games die bar real ones like football and tennis ? What 100 games on the switch are we talking about ? Retro has never been bigger than it is now....any ideas why ? Why do people want to play ancient games rather than whizz bang 12 on their 4k Xbox (or not as they lost that race :)

iOS is not even a half-decent gaming platform - I have am iPad, iPhone and Apple TV and if apple banned gaming on iOS tomorrow it wouldn't bother me one bit...it sucks for so many reasons which is a shame but it aint going to change. They just aren't interested, its just not in their DNA like it is for Nintendo and Sony and (possibly) MS.

Nintendo have been here a long, long, long time and I'd be surprised if they dont outlast them all....

I was talking about RedKite's 100 games and reacting to him.

"it's not in their DNA", thus it never will be? When I started gaming in the 16-bit era you had Sega & Nintendo. Sony didn't have gaming in their DNA nor did MS 'cause they weren't even in the business. So why can't Apple one day have it in their DNA? Don't get me wrong, I don't see it happening, but none of us has a crystal ball to see the future so try to keep that mind open ;-)

Tim Cook or delusions of grandeur?

On the actual point, though - why should they buy Nintendo? They have their fingers in enough pies as it is that they're stretched thin, and a gaming platform is a very tricky proposition.

What a silly post. Let’s break it down!
- yes the Switch will die, but when? Gameboy, NES carts still work. People are making replacement parts for those systems. Nintendo may allow you to transfer ownership rights to their next consoles too. I’ve literally never had a Nintendo system die on me and I’ve owned multiple models of each one. When do these systems die?
- the NES and SNES classic have shown retro games still sell incredibly well. Even outside of our demographic there is a healthy market for classic games..... there’s even this very thread asking for Nintendo to release their old games on iOS. Regardless of what you believe there is a big market for Nintendo and their classic games.
- you got value out of iOS games? Cool! You seem hellbent on making your experiences the only one that matters. My experience? I’ve wasted money on iOS games that I cannot play now. Unlike my old PC’s I cannot simply revert back to an older iOS version to play these games. Apple doesn’t let me. I’ve asked them to change their rules but they won’t listen.
- just revisiting the old games thing.... in many individual series cases the older game is better. For example Rollercoaster Tycoon on iOS sold more Classic versions than the latest one. Why? Because new doesn’t mean better. You’ve got to be very young to believe that. And no offence if you are.... we were all young once. Years ago I never thought gaming would be able to improve on the classic values. But they did in some ways!

But what a silly thing to say.... ultimately. Imagine if someone told you not to watch old films or read old books.

And regarding your last reply to me. Of course things might change. But as it stands for the foreseeable future Apple don’t know what to do with gaming. Sony and MS also mess gaming up as it’s very tricky to get right. And if historic companies like them get it wrong more than Nintendo what hope does Apple have? Apple are service providers at this point, Nintendo are doing what they always did and relying on their software quality being good enough that nothing else matters, that it still makes them a profit. Until that changes on their side, and Apple suddenly learn how to control (or at least ride the wave) in the gaming market then they certainly won’t be merging or anything like that. Sega’s fate was sealed long before they bowed out of the hardware market. They literally had no success for multiple generations across handheld and console. Nintendo don’t make such mistakes for long, and so, remain relevant where people only wish they could buy Nintendo games for their non-Nintendo platforms.

Well it’s like Sony had problems and SCE was their only arm making money. Since Nintendo only has one arm to care about..... well it’s all they care about lol. Sorry I hate armchair pundits and I know I’m doing it right now. Truth is anything could change but right now Nintendo are riding high and mighty with the 3DS and Switch lines. Who knows what might happen. A fool makes assumptions about Nintendo as they’re prone to creating paradigm shifts for fun. My personal thinking is that the Switch is the start of a new gen for Nintendo, that we’ll see a Switch 2 that’s fully backward compatible.... like the PS4 Pro is.... in 4 years or so. That their immediate future is secure and fruitful looking. My wife runs a game studio but one that hasn’t currently released a Switch game. Word on the ground is every dev she speaks to wants in on the Switch.

They're undoubtedly my two favourite companies, and a lot of my favourite philosophical lessons have come from their leaders. They certainly overlap in the desire to follow their convictions, appeal to the whole world, innovate, and dare to be different.

I'm sure Apple would love owning Nintendo, but there seem to be some areas where at their cores they don't overlap. Nintendo is always looking for new ways to engage players, and those "ways" have never been limited or constrained by devices – that's why they invent their devices. Every aspect of their consoles is designed in service of the gameplay experience, and no other purpose can take priority over that.

Perhaps they could continue to do this under Apple, but that would take some seriously unheard-of autonomy under them, and they already have complete autonomy. They could only maintain or compromise it by being acquired.

Meanwhile, Apple certainly has made strides into gaming. Their devices aren't the best gaming machines, but they're certainly capable, user-populated, and still seem like fertile ground for software developers to set up shop in.

Going to quote your words about me: "You seem hellbent on making your experiences the only one that matters.", yet because you never had a Nintendo system die on you, they never break down? My SNES gave up after 9yrs and I bought me another one 2nd hand. My N64 was sent back twice within it's first year because it froze up after 20-30 minutes. But I'm happy that you concluded they don't die so I must've been dreaming...
Your point was that spending money on iOS-games is wasted money and spending on Switch games isn't. In 20 years you won't be able to play those 100 Switchgames on the most recent Nintendosystem. So in order to play old Nintendogames you will need an old Nintendosystem.
You claim you can't play old iOS-games, well if you apply the same logic and buy yourself an old iPod Touch with an old iOS, you can also keep playing these games.

So either you keep the old system and the money isn't wasted or you get a new system and lose the ability to play them when the old one breaks down. There is no difference whatsoever between old Apple devices and old iOS-games. (remakes excluded)

- the NES and SNES classic have shown retro games still sell incredibly well. Even outside of our demographic there is a healthy market for classic games..... there’s even this very thread asking for Nintendo to release their old games on iOS. Regardless of what you believe there is a big market for Nintendo and their classic games.
The OP wants Apple to buy Nintendo so they could port every game from the 80's (his second post) to the Switchgames (first post), but that's a ridiculous wish, because they aren't bringen their full catalog to the Switch neither. They just have a couple of franchises that keep returning every single generation of console they make... If their next console is called "Water" we'll have a Mario Water, Zelda Water, Mario Kart Water, Mario Party Water, ...
Why don't they bring the full old school catalog to the new system: bevause the healthy market you claim isn't that healthy. Too much effort for too low sales, otherwise they would've been doing nothing else on the Wii U to save it from being a total flop.

Duh, they're cheap as hell. When I spend 5 euro on a game, I don't expect to get the same value out of it as a 50-60 euro switchgame (or any other console).

Saying you bought 100 SNES-games, do enlighten me how to play them on a switch? You can't, so how do you play them? With old hardware!
So why are you saying you wasted money on iOS-games? Get an old iPod Touch with iOS 6 or something and you can keep playing all those old iOS-games.

You should keep the comparison fair and don't expect the latest iPhone to play all the games you ever bought, when the newest Nintendo hardware can't do it either.

My first console was a SNES, got it for Christmas in '92 as a 10yr old. I am aware that there are old games that were awesome. But some are more nostalgia than you care to admit. I tried to play Metal Gear Solid again on the PS One. It's ugly as hell and loading times are the worst. Yet when it was brand new, it was an awesome game.
I don't think there are a lot of people that really, fully play these old games again. Most people buy those new SNES remakes out of nostalgia but don't really spend hours and hours playing through all those games. Why would you, if you can have Zelda on the Switch... Old Zelda's were cool back in the days but why bother playing them again?

But what a silly thing to say.... ultimately. Imagine if someone told you not to watch old films or read old books.

Films is the same. All those VHS-tapes from back in the days. Who bothers watching those again? Except here and there some people. Most people threw them out. But they've had there fun with it, so was it wasted money then? Like your iOS-games?

And regarding your last reply to me. Of course things might change. But as it stands for the foreseeable future Apple don’t know what to do with gaming. Sony and MS also mess gaming up as it’s very tricky to get right. And if historic companies like them get it wrong more than Nintendo what hope does Apple have? Nintendo don’t make such mistakes for long, and so, remain relevant where people only wish they could buy Nintendo games for their non-Nintendo platforms.

Sony and MS mess up gaming? Please do elaborate?
Don't get me wrong, I have respect for Nintendo, but they've done some ****** stuff aswel and Sony/MS have been battering them for years now with ease.

Nintendo console (millions sold) - Sony Entertainment - Microsoft.
N64 (33) - PSX (102) -
GC (22) - PS2 (155) - Xbox (24)
Wii (101) - PS3 (80) - Xbox 360 (84)
Wii U (14) - PS4 (74) - Xbox One (36-ish)
Switch (15+)

Nintendo really got lucky someone came up with the Wiimotes and they caught on, because they would've followed Sega's fate otherwise, without a doubt. So there's no need to act like they're the all knowing company when it comes to gaming... Sony has been king of the land the moment they stepped in outselling the N64 3 to 1, so I'm really curious how they've been messing up gaming according to you...

I note your figures seem to miss off the hundreds of millions of portable consoles sold by pretty much one company - owning a sector of a market as large as gaming is never luck - Nintendo have always owned portable - lets not even talk about the Vita and MS didn’t even bother to compete in that field - the switch is portable so I’d never bet against the big N on that.

Idiots on here last year were saying Nintendo would have to do a Sega and go software only, well that proved right didn’t it ? Besides Sonic (and when was that last any good) what IP of the level Nintendo has did Sega ever have ? So not really an example to hold up. Going back to the original post for a sec I just don’t see N games working on touchscreen, they’ve always needed precise physical controls which is just not a thing that is standard with IOS. I also hope from a selfish reason they don’t as used to love Rare and what a crock they became under MS ownership.
