M1Pro/Max will be based on 1.5 year old cores by the time the big iMac ships. Add a 1.5 year update cycle....

I had a quick glance over, a d it seems like his arguments boil down to “it took AMD 15 months to claim that their paper launch mobile CPUs match the M1 tech”. Yes, Apple is pretty much doomed ?

It's very weird how much of the commentary is actually this word for word.

Always gonna be something better just around the corner...

He is right about a M1 Max-powered Mac mini being the best bang for the buck in a M1 Max machine...

But that M3 Max Duo Mac mini Pro with real time ray tracing, I should wait for that...! ;^p

- he doesn't know the price of that
- he doesn't know if and how hard it will throttle

Sure it will be cheaper than laptop with the same specs, but that surely not much of a revelation.

Is he? A Mac Mini will come with a HDR display and a battery? What if I want a laptop? I mean, I am confused. Is the goal to get something with an M1 Max I sure for as little money as possible or is it getting something one actually needs?

P.S. in the same spirit - some Ryzen mobile CPUs look very nice on paper but are impossible to buy.

I already have displays and a decent UPS, don't need a laptop format; so for me, the Mac mini is the lowest cost solution to get a M1 Max-powered Apple computer...?

Except we have no idea what Apple would charge for that theoretical Mac mini. I’m sure it would be the lowest cost M1 Max but there is no guarantee it would be the best value.

Ans that is very fair. It’s just I think it’s very silly to claim that a Mini is best bang for buck if not all users are in your situation.

In the latest MacRumors Podcast, Mark Gurman discussed the original timeline for Apple Silicon. He stated the M1 Pro/Max notebooks were supposed to come in the Spring of 2021, and possibly M2 macs in the fall of 2021. Essentially on an annual cadence, with M1/M2/M3 in the fall and the Pro/Max variants mid-cycle in the spring.

We all know it didn’t pan out this way. Gurman suggests Apple delayed the MacBooks Pro not once, but twice. It seems based on current rumors that we may not get M2 macs until this fall.

What do you think Apple is going to do going forward? If Gurman is correct, this means we are essentially 1 year behind the original schedule. I would assume the actual chip team isn’t behind schedule though as we got the A15 this year, meaning they likely have M2 already done. Rumors suggested delays were due to other issues like miniLED.

With the latest AMD and Intel chips as well, Apple also has a bit of catching up to do (not in performance per watt, but single core performance). Do you think Apple will eventually skip a generation (but still call it M2?) to make up for the delays?

Who the hell thinks the M1 is on an annual schedule? The M1 MBP / MBA will follow the same update cycle as the iPad Pro as they share the same chip.

And the iPad Pro was never on an annual schedule.

Expect the Mac's to be outdated in comparison to the iPhone, who will get it's chip updated annually. The iPhone is Apple their money maker.

Mark Gurman does. And he has a great track record.

iPad Pro was the only product using the A12X chip. It made sense it was on an 18-month cycle. Apple is way ahead in the tablet market and there’s not a ton of volume for the iPad Pro. However, Now Apple has 5 products using the M1 chips, and they are the most popular macs too that have usually received annual updates. That’s way more volume than just an ipad.

Agreed. The 2018 Intel Mac mini was the least bang for the buck when it was launched.

That Intel iMac was only the 27” while the 21.5” iMac had not been updated for two years.

Gurman is the most accurate leaker to date based on volume, so I’m more inclined to believe what he says. Especially since this also coincides with a few other rumors that we were supposed to get the MacBook Pro’s at WWDC this year.

Silicon design costs? Apple isn’t doubling their design team each year. That argument doesn’t make any sense. Are you referring to TSMC fab costs?

In August 2021, Gurman wrote that he believed that M1X Mac mini would be launched in the “next several months.” For MacBook Pro he was never confident enough to say it would come with mini LED. He always danced around the prediction about the display.

Gurman is right many times, but there are also times where he is simply wrong.

Silicon design costs are engineering costs related to the designing the actual chip. As the litho shrinks and transistors increase, the cost to simulate it costs more. Mask sets and the actual wafers double in cost. There is a reason why fewer and fewer players can afford to adopt the latest litho.

One doesn't (fully) rule out the other. If the original "M1x" concept failed it did so in late 2020 which would have given Apple time and opportunity to change plans on what gets a redesign when.
The weird 1fan vs 2fan iMac versions strongly suggest that something is off.

But there is no indication any M1X concept failed in late 2020. Digitimes would have reported on complaints from chassis makers, display suppliers, flex connector makers, etc.

Unlike Ming-Chi Kuo, Mark Gurman was never confident to predict when MacBook Pro would be launched. That alone tells me Gurman never had the all the details. Now Gurman says it was delayed? He never made a prediction in the first place.

Contrast that with Ming-Cho Kuo’s prediction made in mid-2020. We see that MacBook Pro aligns with his original prediction of mid-2021 or Q3’21. In all likelihood, Gurman had zero visibility on the mini LED development process and couldn’t offer any level of accuracy in terms of timeline.

Apple is clearly using fans and ports as an artificial differentiator. Fans is the new GHz for Apple, many people just don’t get it. With MacBook Air, they deliberately removed the fan. It used the exact same chassis from Intel-based MBA. For iMac, there is a $200 difference between tiers. GHz (fans) is an obvious lever to pull.

He said when he thought they were coming several times in 2021, more specific than Kuo.

There were more on Twitter too. You can check his track record Here. He is 87% accurate with over 500 rumors. Over double the amount of leaks of any other leaker, and yet has retained high accuracy. Kuo is only 75% accurate with less than half the rumors Gurman has reported.

Let's put it into context. Everybody knew MacBook Pro was coming in 2021. Gurman didn't make a time prediction until May 2021 when he wrote, MacBook Pro could "debut as soon as early this summer." When WWDC passed, he wrote, "between September and November at the latest." These are pretty weak and reactionary predictions. Most importantly, how could it have been delayed twice if his original prediction was summer?

Compare with Kuo's prediction way back in July 2020, "new 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models equipped with the Apple Silicon and all-new form factor design in late 2Q21 or 3Q21."

There are times when Kuo misses and Gurman misses, but this claim about delays is really questionable.
